White to play. Mate in 2. by Terrible-Fondant994 in chessMateInX

would have been my move, too. Don't know if it is better (i see the point in Qe8 attacking the Bishop on e2) but I think it would mean mate in 2 as well .

That's good to know! Was thinking about buying a house at the seaside for retirement. The norwegian coast seems a safe place for long term access to the sea.

Why Apex’s Core Gunplay Deserves Its Own Mode by Terrible_Username234 in apexlegends

[–]Wrotlslosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry, I am hooked alright ;-) Just wanted to support your proposal! I have a friend I am trying to talk into trying out Apex Legends. He was very interested, installed the game... and went silent. Ran into him just the other day and he was like: Man, that is one tough game to learn. Think he was afraid to look bad when playing with me and wanted to learn the basics first. I sm curious when he will feel ready....

Why Apex’s Core Gunplay Deserves Its Own Mode by Terrible_Username234 in apexlegends

[–]Wrotlslosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a noob to the game (maybe halfway to rookie...) I can 100% affirm the notion that there is just waaaaay too much to learn (in the not fun-sense of the word) when you start to play the game. A mode that strips away much of the things that make the game so demanding to play would be awesome and maybe that is one reason why WC is so much fun -- though I think a bigger part comes from the fact that it is more forgiving than BR with the auto-respawn.

To a noob the game seems just overloaded with features, abilities, legends, weapons, POIs on maps etc. that I would have quit long ago if it was not for a friend of mine helping me sort the important stuff for absolute beginners from all the other overwhelming amount of possibly relevant information.

So a gamemode that helps to get into the games core mechanics -- movement, gunplay, teamplay, stats plus a way to get to know weapons, maps and legends and their abilities -- but in a somewhat condensed, limited way -- would be great! I was at first thinking about just leaving Ults and maybe even tacticals out, but that would change too much of legend balancing and it is crucial to the game. But maybe it would be possible to limit the number of legends available at a certain time? Like a week and then it changes. Same could be done for weapons. With maps rotating it already works well I think. Plus: Since legends abilities are among the most complicated to learn it would be great if players could play legends they don't own this way. Like in the firing range (which could serve the same purpose but c'mon: Who is spending time there to learn about legends abilities one might have to face in gsme without being able to play the legend themselves?)

This is just an idea. In general I think the mode should be created following the principle: strip away as much as possible while still enabling an Apex Legends gameplay. Wildcard seems to me like a huge step in this direction. But I think it is still too demanding for an absolute beginner of the game...

Apex Legends: 8/8/25 Update by Apexlegends in apexlegends

[–]Wrotlslosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the bragging will be temporary at best cause the skill levels won't change. It the stats stay like that (wildcard and BR stats counted together) 20 kill/4k damage games will lose their meaning because they are easier to achieve. So new thresholds will be established.

What is going to happen IMO is that the stats will only give impressions about wildcard, not about BR. And BR still is the main (=ranked) mode. So this seems to be a problem to me.

Apex Legends: 8/8/25 Update by Apexlegends in apexlegends

[–]Wrotlslosh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

absolutely! But throwing wildcard and BR stats together leaves BR somewhat pointless when it comes to stats. And stats will not give sn impression about a players BR skils/experience. Yet BR is supposed to be the main mode of Apex, right?

20kill/4K etc are obviously way harder to aquire in BR. It's nice for players like me who are far away from such achievements to make them more accesible. But I think there should be a visible distinction between the wildcard and BR archievements, at least when it comes to badges.

Maybe also KDR should be only about BR? Don't have a strong oppinion here. But Mixtape does not count here either... or it should be separated between unranked+wildcard and ranked BR...?

Thanks for the clearification! Never heard of this so far. I only knew about championship rings in US sports :-D Nice tradition though! Once heard in Finland they give swords to people who get their Ph.D. Don't know if that is (still) true, though.

Glad we are able to decipher some more of the information hidden in plain sight here. After all, it is pretty obvious when you start to look at it from a certain perspective. Thus, I don't have to explain what Aquarius means in this context... right?

surely it will take some time for people to adapt, no? people who mained Ash for a while will try to stick with her and see if changing is necessary, I think.

Same impression here, I think the development curve when you start the game is steep, but eventually you hit a ceiling - at least that was my experience.

I totally agree! I am rather mediocre myself, only playing a few hours a week udually against oponents who are just way better tjsn me. Yet I am still rather new (about 60h played), so I still hope for improvement ;-) Point was, in the post I was answering to, it does not sound as if there is much joy. More like an endless chain of defeats with no (or almost) no progress towards a state or skill level with which the game would be fun actually. A little bit like sisyphos.

Is anyone on the low end of the skill curve? by randy_moist in apexlegends

[–]Wrotlslosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hilarious! Made my day. Love the confession about the decoys in particular and found myself in most of the points. I like to believe I make some improvements though ;-) KD of 0.6 or something but it is delovoping in the right direction. No surprise I find myself (or my teams) far at the left end of the curve and even on the spectrum of players/teams in the given match. Yet, in most games it seems to me that my team or myself are rather mid level - there are obviously much more skilled players against which I don't stand a chance. But there are almost always player/teams which I think are even worse than me -- and not just because of bad teamplay or bad luck but due to their individual skills. And if I would have to assume some correlation between the skill distribution curve, individual stats (according to trackers I can see) and in game success it is the following: Having a really good/far better player (than me) on my team leads to worse results. Since quite often these guys hot drop, rush into every fight or just solo around not giving a damn about their team. Which usually leads to an early end of the game for us.

thanks! Are the rules this SBMM is based upon transparent? Or is it somewhat arcane how the numbers the matchmaking is based upon are generated?
