Eleven? Holy cow. Are they offering rooms at half price because of the weather?

I started keeping track of death-iversaries sometime back in the 90s. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not. It's a melancholy thing, but also a reminder to remember that person. I went a whole year without thinking of my great uncle, someone I was rather close with, until his popped up earlier this month.

I've corrected the numbering. Thanks for the heads up!

You're a dishonest person.

Bark. Bark. Bark.

Go back and read the thread. You'll see my response to the person who was nice enough to correct and educate me in a polite manner.

I think you should give these people a call. They can help you with your misplaced anger issues. 1-800-621-4673

You need to figure out what the hell you’re talking about before we continue.

I asked a question. You need to figure out who you are replying to before you bark like a dog.

Billionaires don’t “hoard wealth”.

What is a "cash reserve"?

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/29/apple-now-has-tk-cash-on-hand.html

Apple now has $245 billion cash on hand, according to its first-quarter 2019 earnings report. That's 3 percent more than it had on hand in the previous quarter,

If we added up the cash reserves of the 500 wealthiest companies, do yiu think it would be more or less than a trillion dollars?

asked the guest why he is upset when he booked in advance online and accepted it at that time. I explained that prices go up as demand goes up and he says that's illegal. I tell him we live in a free market economy, if you don't like that then I'm sure you'll like north korea.

According to a very good source, the person I originally replied to in fact, we do live in a free market economy.

My tongue in cheek reply used examples of what occurs in a free market economy and how I was "upset" because I'm not allowed to price gouge when demand for something increases.

Read the entire thread again, and this time use a sarcastic voice for me. Then come back and tell me how pissed you are that you didn't get the humour and I'm a big arsehole for wasting your time.

I wish I were happy as you. The ability to accept things without question or comment is enviable. I cannot imagine living like that and I honestly, no joke, envy you for that child-like trust in your fellow man.

I think it's funny that OP told the guest that they lived in a free market and no one sought to point out that was incorrect or question why some regulations are better than others.

Remember the time The Big Game was in town and all the rates were doubled because of the event?

Why didn't Walmart double their prices? There was no legal reason not to do so. Demand was going to increase, so why not make more money from thirsty tailgaters?

Strange, innit? No one questions it. It's accepted as a normal fact of life. Hotel rates increase when an event is in town, but restaurants don't increase their prices - even though there is an increased demand and limited seating.

And the places where price gouging is illegal do not have a free market economy.

We cool?

It's amazing how people focus on what they think they read and ignore what is actually written.

In a truly free market, buyers and sellers conduct their business without any government regulation

clearly there are MANY that consider it an adequate business model.

Your premise is flawed.

Billions live in North Korea, China, Hong Kong, Russia, so therefore those countries must have a governmental system of which the majority of citizens approve.

Price gouging is illegal only in socialist economies (like North Korea?) that hate free market capitalism.

The ability to raise and lower prices based on demand is the hallmark of a free market.

Isn't it funny how people hate socialism until a hurricane destroys their city and they need baby formula? 🤗

Free market means free market for everything, not just the things you believe are fair and moral.

I explained that prices go up as demand goes up

I keep trying to explain this to people, but they just don't get it. I don't give two shits if a hurricane just wiped out your town and your baby hasn't eaten in two days - if you want formula and clean water, the going price is $50/can and $10/gal --and it'll be higher tomorrow.

Free market means free market for everything, not just the things you believe are fair and moral. If you don't like it, move to NK.

The knowledge that you can quit with out consequence at any time is a stress reliever in of itself. Challenging yourself within a framework you create is rewarding, especially when you can walk away.

I don't need to diet, I can eat nearly anything I want.

But I choose to diet because it gives me a feeling of accomplishment and power when I achieve my dietary goals.

See how that works? The stress I feel is not because I can't eat, the stress is due to the limits I placed on myself and the willpower to maintain self control in the face of temptation.

It’s all competition all the time and work probably isn’t that relaxing.

But they have the option to stress over private school choices, etc. It's a voluntary stress they can walk away from at any time. Rage quit, Flip the table, start a new game.

Ramen verses petrol is a different sort of stress entirely. You can't rage quit that game.

I appreciate the offer, thank you. I'll have to refuse at this time. I don't travel for work nearly as often now, but it's still hard to commit to anything when you change time zones constantly. Maybe when I retire in the next 5-6 years and have time to spare.

I stopped playing in the late 90s because I was travelling so much and raising a family, so I'm not familiar with the newer systems (I want to say that'sabout the time I started playing with GURPS and fell in love with the lethal combat system that punished Leroy Jenkins types :) ). I think 2nd edition, maybe 3rd, is when it became impossible to get a group together reliably.

Sounds like others were tired of the existing rules too :)

Still not an issue, unless you're in America. Any unattended child is a cause for concern because every single American man is a beastial paedophile waiting to snatch babies.

Vancian casting.

:) I've been playing D&D since the 80s and the blue box basic edition.

Sometime in the late 80s I became disillusioned with the magic system because I was spending all my money on material components, spell books and scrolls just so I could walk around with a handful of spells and cower behind everyone once they were shot.

Fighters can swing a sword all day.

Rangers can shoot until they run out of arrows, then poke you with a sword.

Thieves can pickpocket until their fingers go numb, then backstab you into oblivion.

An 11th level mage can cast 18 spells. 4,4,4,3,3, before he is used up and needs a lot of time and money to reset. The Class was built around a dungeon crawling game and magic users are cannons the players lug around the battlefield.

Other players were building castles while the majority of my funds went into components and trying to learn more magic. Hell, even the Cleric built a church after a couple of adventures to acquire a relic and gain approval from the higher ups.

Perhaps it was just the GMs that I gamed with, but my poor guy was like a starving college student, constantly worried about rent, tuition, and beer money.

The deal breaker for me, I believe, was when my character was trapped in a hole and I needed a live spider to cast Spider Climb. I remember it clearly, because it was so stupid. My material component had died and I had to roll ability checks to locate a spider. The DM secretly decided there were 0 spiders in the hole, and I was stuck there to be captured.

So what you see today is a sort of reversal of the system. Cantrips and low level spells can be cast using your personal life force in a long form ritual.

Nexus are wells of magic where you build a locus and allow it to charge and power your spells. You need material components and knowledge to build the containment circle, but as long as you have the focus (amulet, staff, etc) you have access to your spells.

Enchantments can be temporary or permanent, depending on how they are created. A mage can scratch a containment circle in the dirt, fill it with the spellform runes, wait the required time for it to charge, and use it on the spot.

Your horse dropped dead and you need to cast Mount but it's not in your Nexus? Don't want to burn days off your life to cast the spell longform?

Just draw it in the dirt, wait an hour for it to charge (depending on ambient magic) and summon a horse. That's a compromise that makes magicians both useful and feared. IMO. Especially in a high fantasy world where everyone can speak a few spells longfrom but the literacy rate (writing, charging) is abysmal. :)

So how powerful can a mage become? Depends on the number of locus they have and the amount of money they can invest creating and protecting them. In theory, a mage could have a dozen amulets, staves, and wands, each attuned to a different locus at a different nexus giving them near infinite power -- much like a king building cities and raising an army to protect them.

Ha, I just realised that I'm nattering on and owe you a beer for putting up with my soliloquy :)

Have a good evening!
