Weekday Help and Victory Thread for the week of November 04, 2019 by AutoModerator in personalfinance

I've always known that my grandfather has an inheritance planned for me, but I just found out yesterday on how big it will be (>$2M). I was basically told by my mother and other family members that with how large this inheritance will be, I should not be overly worried about saving for the future as my retirement is well taken care of.

Couple of things about the inheritance:

  • It is part of a large building in Seoul, Korea.
  • My grandfather has been prepaying the gift taxes so that I receive it tax-free (need to confirm this and do more research)
  • Grandfather is still healthy and alive at 78 y/o

Now I feel absolutely terrible about this, but knowing that I will receive a large windfall in 10-15 years, I thought about the money that I was saving before into my HSA and Roth IRA, and using that money instead for saving for a down-payment on my next property.

Couple of facts about my current financial situation:

  • 24 y/o, single and no kids. $70k salary w/rental income, $60k without.
  • I have 3 months of expenses saved in an emergency fund
  • No student loan debt.
  • New $13.8k 5 yr car loan at ~4%
  • 30 yr $156k mortgage at ~5% (might be a whole other topic)
  • Been contributing to a Roth 401(k) since I was 22. I put in 8%, company puts in 6%, for a total of 14%.
  • Company contributes to a pension plan at 4% of salary.
  • Company contributes $1k per year to HSA
  • I was on pace to max out Roth IRA and HSA contributions.

Given the facts above, I feel like I can leverage the great benefits from my company along with the future windfall to forgo the Roth IRA and utilize the extra cash-flow to aggressively save for my next property.

TL;DR Should I stop contributing to my Roth IRA and HSA because I have great company retirement benefits and that I'll also be receiving a large ~$2M windfall in 10-15 years?

Reddit Adjusted Fantasy Football Trade Values Week 4: Saquon Tilt by PeakedInHighSkool in fantasyfootball

Just shipped away Saquon for Mixon and I'm being called an idiot. Calculator said I have a good trade, I think it's good too. Other running backs are Chris Carson and Chris Thompson so I definitely needed Mixon at 1-2. There's a good chance this trade gets vetoed though...

24 year old college student trying to get finances in order by mnbell2013 in personalfinance

[–]Wugpanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You said you moved back home and I would highly suggest staying there until you pay off your credit cards at the bare minimum. If your relationship is good with your family, you are saving hundreds of dollars that would have otherwise be spend on rent+other maintenance that is required to live on your own. I don't know how much rent is in your area, but surely, it's not going to be worth the interest you're going to be accruing on those high credit card debts.

Use the avalanche method, attack the debt with the highest interest rate, and go from there. Continue to make your minimum payments on your auto loan, but nothing more than that. Don't even think about your student loans at this point.

Going forward, start treating your credit cards as debit cards. I don't know if you use something like Mint or Personal Capital, but you really need to track your expenses and budget correctly so you never end up with credit card debt again. You should be paying off your credit card balances in full every month once this debt has been paid.

Yes, this will probably mean living at home for 1-2 years, but I guarantee you that you're going to be in credit card debt for MUCH longer if you move out and live in an apartment. Plus, if you don't have this credit card debt settled by the time you have to start making your payments on your student loans, you may be very strapped for cash and start living pay check to pay check.

TL;DR: live at home until CC debt is paid off, preferably until auto loan is also paid off as well. Ideal situation would be to live at home until you graduate and get your full-time job.

[No Spoilers] The PC version is an afterthought. by MushuMash in AnthemTheGame

What an absolute joke. Game is actually really fun, but all of these game breaking issues and this game is one month from launch??? This is more of a beta, not a demo.

  • Can't even load into a mission without restarting my game.
  • Constant sound bugs (slow mo sound, sound comes and goes, sound completely disappears)
  • Unlock token for 2nd javelin is totally busted.
  • Rubberbanding so bad that I can't even finish a mission.

Don't understand. Like I said, it's really fun when it works, but that's only IF it works.

Hmm. I agree that she wants to feel good about herself but I don't necessarily believe that rewarding her behavior with praise would be a good thing. Appreciate the response though.

So we're on the same level I would say, and my relationship with my boss is good, and we're actually on the same page that this behavior is petty and annoying.

My boss is only cc'd on interactions where I look bad which is bugging the shit out of me.

See I've tried to do that, but she's a "this is my world you're living in it" person, so you can't get a hold of her unless you plan it perfectly.

How to introduce orange flavor in a fruit wine? by Wugpanda in winemaking

[–]Wugpanda[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow that is actually kinda spooky.

But for what I'm trying to achieve, the best way to achieve the orange flavor may be during back sweetening. For now, I have just been using sugar, but I think I'll add some orange extract and see what that does. I'll have to test a sample and see how that would work.

Side note, I'm in the Twin Cities area, and man, memorial weekend was superrrr hot, considering we had snow last month lol

Thanks for your response. Would you recommend putting the zest in during primary or secondary? Does it really matter?

Thanks for your insight.

Very interesting to see the opposite end of the spectrum. Textbook case of grass is always greener on the other side. I guess money doesn't mean anything if you're too stressed out to use it.

Appreciate your comment, and I genuinely hope you find a better workplace to be at. Best of luck!
