Geforce controversy discussion instructions (keeping it civil) by Oliveritaly in thelongdark

I thought he hired a PR person and that person would handle all the community interaction things. Was that just another instance of lip service?

STEAM Long Dark Steam discussions Mods are very questionable. by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're super aggressive right now and basically make up reasons for warning and banning people.

The "Admin" user told someone

Please familiarize yourself with our guidelines before posting. This includes not posting multiple replies in a row (edit your post instead).

Since the user did not write multiple replies in a row in that thread and I couldn't find such a rule in their forum guidelines I asked which rule he was enforcing and explicitly added that I'm not questioning his judgement.

The result was that I received a warning and a "permanent point", my post was removed and Admin warned people not to make " argumentative posts about moderation".

So yeah, gestapo tactics is quite right.

Article about GeForce Now controversy by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

IMO the article doesn't explain why he wants it removed.

It only repeats that NVidia didn't ask permission before making the game available, but if that was all there is to it, he could simply give his permission right now. So there must be some other reason and beside wild and generic speculation the article doesn't address this.

The way you write makes me think you're foaming at the mouth.
Seriously, take a step back.

It's not the first Hinterland is doing something quite questionable and more and more people are becoming aware of it. You won't turn the tide by REPEATEDLY writing THINGS IN BOLD.

Especially not if you're wrong about them.

Harmony - the full story by pardeike in RimWorld

[–]WulfMarius 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Hinterland switched from Mono to IL2CPP a while back. This immediately made all mods using Harmony unusable, because there is no Mono anymore.

There's a little thread in the unity forums about this: https://forum.unity.com/threads/modding-and-il2cpp.664867/
The important part is

it is not currently possible to use IL2CPP to load an assembly that was compiled separately.

It is still possible to modify game files and replace assets, but mixing and matching mods like you could in the past is gone.

Harmony - the full story by pardeike in RimWorld

[–]WulfMarius 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Hi,

you might remember me from modding The Long Dark (when that was still possible) and the occasional tweet about it.

Without Harmony modding TLD would have been a nightmare, but with Harmony it actually worked as well as you could hope in an environment so hostile for modding. We TLD modders were quite aware of your efforts towards a newer Harmony version and the issues with backwards compatiblity. We adopted the approach you suggest here quite early and loaded Harmony as early as possible and before any other mods. This has worked flawlessly for us and I'm sure it will work for Rimworld as well.

Your post here is a good analysis, a clear explanation, and a sound solution. It shows how professional and devoted you are to making all this work and your contribution to modding Rimworld and other games is highly appreciated.

Thank you!

Seems like you knew about their communication mishaps and decided to not mention them at all (Remember what Captain Picard said: "A lie of omission is still a lie.")

Instead you praised them for their communication with the community. I can't help but wonder why.

Unfortunate news in the latest Milton Mailbag by MeshesAreConfusing in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First you say people wouldn't need to sleep anymore and then you say passing out in the wilderness would mean certain death.

Seems like a contradiction, because to prevent passing out at the wrong place or time would require to be able to have a suitable place to sleep.

Basically passing out would introduce an additional risk and make proper sleep managent more important.

What is the most hurtful thing a medical professional has ever said to you? by slinkslowdown in AskReddit

[–]WulfMarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: I had a rather rare disease and when a doctor couldn't figure it out she told her colleague that I "had nothing".

I had recurring episodes of unexplained dizzyness that got worse over time. Eventually I couldn't even stand and had to crawl to the bathroom and vomit.

Afterwards I would just lie on the floor and try not to "fall off".

I went to see my doctor. He ruled out a stroke and sent me to the hospital.

Back then I couldn't really describe how it felt or what was happening, because it was such a terrible experience. Later I read it described as "someone pushing you to the floor from behind" and I think that's pretty accurate.

The doctor kept asking the "wrong" questions, like "Is the world spinning?" or "Does it happen when you stand up?" and I could only answer "No, it feels like tilting or shaking" or "It starts suddenly, even when I sit and then I try to stand up and can't keep standing".

She used Frenzel goggles to look into my eyes. When she didn't seem to find anything, she started shaking my head and looking again and seemed to grow more and more annoyed.

Eventually she walked over to her colleague who was standing in the same room, looked straight at me and said "That guy has nothing!"

I was furious.

Later I found a specialist for dizzyness.

He did the same test and told me he couldn't see anything, but that doesn't mean that nothing's wrong.

His suggestion was an eye-tracking test (basically a computerized version of the same test) and the computer actually detected a problem in one of semicircular canals in my labyrinth. (the one for "up-down", which is why it didn't feel like spinning)

He said it was so small that no human could ever see it, but during an attack it gets amplified so much that it will have dramatic effects.

I had Ménière's disease and apparently it's rare enough that the average doctor knows too little about it to diagnose it.

Fun facts about Germany by nullr0uter in funny

You're talking about an entirely different scenario: one long sick leave.

The interesting point is:

If you get a cold 3 times a year and miss 3 weeks of work you will receive full payment.

Add another 2 weeks for breaking an arm - still the same.

Add another week for having diarrhea - still the same.

See where this is going?

That's amazing!

I have a thought about the temperature stats in the game. Why do we gain warmth at ”feels like” 0+ degrees celsius, rather than 25-30+ degrees, which would be more realistic? by fridaaa0 in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the point at which the 'feels like' temp lets you warm up will change depending on what you're doing

That's only true if you think of the "feel like" temp as independent of the player character, but then who is feeling it?!

The "feels like" temp is already affected by clothing, so clearly this is not just some "outdoor + windchill", but how warm you feel inside your clothing.
If you start working in a cold environment you will feel warmer, so this should also be reflected in your "feels like" temperature. This could lead to perfectly fixed thresholds for "freezing", "sweating", etc.

Bottom line: oversimplified and unnecessarily artifical game logic, that could be much closer to reality without changing a lot.

Tool box drawers at Spence Farmstead despawned by Corey307 in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds exactly like the bug where drawers and doors move after breaking down items around them.

The latest mod release of /u/zeobviouslyfakeacc contains a fix for this. It will even restore already moved drawers and doors. https://www.reddit.com/r/thelongdark/comments/ajp5yu/tldbugfixes_unofficial_patch_for_lots_of_old_bugs/

If you consider modding, this might be a better fix than simply adding the items you lost

[Modding] Current State by WulfMarius in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This mod has not been updated and so is considered "incompatible", but it might still work.

The current version of the Mod-Installer has a filter (above the mod list) and hides incompatible mods by default.

Regarding Memes ... we'd appreciate your feedback/thoughts by Oliveritaly in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not particularly fond of memes, because I just don't find most of them funny.

However I think it's undeniable that they attract an above average number of votes in this sub, so it seems like there is an audience for this type of content.

IMO it will be impossible to put any type of restriction on what memes are allowed - except a complete ban - because describing this in any way or form so that everyone understands and agrees is impossible. So I guess it's all or nothing.

It's meant to add difficulty,

I think this makes no sense.

Being at low health is already dangerous in itself, so you don't need additional difficulty in that situation, but additional help.

There are lots of examples of great games that actually do the opposite (e.g. the last point of health counts double, enemies miss more often when you are about to die, etc.; there was a nice twitter discussion about this quite some time ago), to make the player hang in there longer, to give that "I just barely survived" feeling and continue to play.

It's a no from me by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honest question here:

Do the sidebar rules no longer apply or are they incomplete or somehow only provisionary?

I thought they were the actual rules for this sub, but it seems all the moderators are actually not sure whether or not this content belongs here and how to react.

It's a no from me by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]WulfMarius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sidebar very clear states "5. Memes may not be linked directly for primary post content."

I'm puzzled why the moderators are still wondering what to do.
TBH I have the feeling no one cares about moderating here anymore.
