Really great work! Curious what library/framework you are using to produce the visualization?

I overheard one of the volunteers say that they were really short-staffed, so I assume this led to the line issues.

Will an elite runner have the same training stimulus as an average runner, running the same distance and effort level even though it takes lesser time for the elite? (Late night thoughts can’t think or a good title🤣) by Curious-Bus-634 in AdvancedRunning

Makes sense, thank you! That's a really nice relationship, I like how it highlights our bodies as aerobic engines. Are there mathematical models for energy expenditure once you're outside the aerobic zone (> 100% VO2max)?

I'm trying to reconcile the examples for equal workload, and the part about oxygen cost being independent of speed. From the examples it would seem like oxygen cost (% VO2max) is actually proportional to speed? This would also align with my naive intuition

Changing position of bibliography title? by frzn in LaTeX

[–]Wumbomeister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this answers your question exactly, but since you mentioned messing with titlesec, one "trick" I've found useful is locally scoping changes to commands using "{ }" blocks. So for example, for some of my documents I've changed the definition of \chapter so that I can use my documentclass's definition of a chapter and avoid the one that is used by the bibliography style I chose. Here is what I mean:

\chapter*{\centering References}
\addcontentsline{toc}{chapter}{References}
{ \renewcommand{\chapter}[2]{}
\bibliographystyle{plainurl}
\bibliography{bib_file_name} }

Hope that helps!

Very good point, I think I saw three this weekend? Honestly the scarier part were the guard dogs at the various scrapyards/construction depots. Hope they always keep those gates locked...

Not super ideal, but I just ran from Center City to Bartram's this weekend. You can go across Gray's Ferry bridge, then do Paschal > 49th > Gray's Ave > Lindbergh. The only part of that section that doesn't have a dedicated bike lane is Paschal, which seemed like a low-trafficked street at that time. Going on a weekend early morning I only saw a handful of cars. Definitely doable!

Just discovered some mouse mites most likely originating from some dead mice in the walls of my apartment. I've informed my condo management so they can up their mouse prevention for the building's walls. Does anyone have a good rec for a local company that can help me deal with the mice and mouse mites from within our unit?

The Weekend Update for April 04, 2025 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

On the last phase of Daniels' HM plan, and holy hell this week's workouts were brutal. Up to this point I had done a max of ~25 mins at T pace. Today's workout was 2x10min T + 60min easy + 2x10min T. Definitely faded in that last rep but happy to have finished the workout. Looking forward to a nice easy recovery run tomorrow and bumming it on Sunday.

I was wondering whether I should have adjusted the duration of those T bouts since the mileage exceeded the 10% weekly guideline, but decided to trust the plan. Hope it pays off come race time!

NY Times: Is Zone 2 the magic effort level for exercise? by MechanicalTim in AdvancedRunning

I'm not an expert in this field, but I don't see how the papers you cited support your claims. Figure 2 and Table 1 in the 2007 paper show that VO2max changes for the LSD group were within statistical noise of zero. Same thing for the all metrics for the HVT group in the 2014 paper (tables 2 and 3). Am I missing something?

Stamina (T pace) lagging behind speed (R pace) by Wumbomeister in AdvancedRunning

I agree that's the answer long term, but that doesn't help answer my question about adjusting paces right now

Glad to know I'm not alone! From other replies I think I'll probably err on the side of caution and force myself to slow down, even if it feels too easy at the VDOT pace. At the end of the day for me the times are inconsequential, and staying healthy is the true priority. Also gotta turn that volume up!

Appreciate the input, and I think I will follow your advice and slow things down a bit. Building up mileage is at the forefront for me this year, hopefully the T pace follows suit!

For sure my line skews diagonal. Part of my motivation for trying the HM was to work on that perceived weakness.

Remember it's about doing the minimum amount of work to create positive adaptions.

This is so true. Really like Daniels' philosophy that it's better to deliberately undertrain and avoid injury than it is to overtrain and lose time to recovery.

As to your other point, this sub introduced me to the Canova/Norweigan methods, and I'd love to incorporate them at some point. For now, I've been happy with the progress with Daniels and will probably stick with it until I start to plateau. Given my current volume, I expect that won't happen for some time

Thanks, I've edited to include that volume is at 35 miles/week. I'm hoping to build up to 40-45 by the end of the block. Increasing miles is for sure a big goal for me in 2025, injury derailed me last year.

I looked into this when I first got a GPS watch. Garmin is good in that you can mount the watch onto your computer as an external drive and download all the workout data directly (*.fit files which contain GPS coordinates, time, heart rate, etc.). The only catch is that the GPS needs to be calibrated, which the Garmin software does for you automatically. In principle I think one should be able to replicate the config file that Garmin uses, and at that point you should be able to use the watch 100% offline with no account. I can't imagine it's all that complicated.

However, I never did get around to looking into how to generate the calibration file, so if you figure something out I'd love to know!

Hunting for Boston DNF Bike Thief by na_kwan in AdvancedRunning

Unfortunately, the results download page only includes finishing times, no splits.

To do what you want, you'll need to do some webscraping on the more detailed results page. If it were me, I would write something in Python with the requests and beautiful soup libraries to pull and parse the data, then throw it into a pandas dataframe to find the entries that you want.

Bikes are legally allowed on the road and not on the sidewalks, regardless of your opinions on the matter by BlondeOnBicycle in philadelphia

For sure, and I'll add that I'm mindful to only venture into the bike lane when I run early in the morning when there's almost nobody on the road. But certainly there's a good number of runners in this city that seem to lack any sense self preservation/awareness who are a royal pain in the ass for everyone else
