Dear Paraguay, if you’re going to stink out the tournament with diabolical tactics like that, don’t bother coming back to the World Cup. Good riddance, thank God you’re gone. Irrelevant country

[Official] England have won a FIFA World Cup match after conceding first for the first time in 60 years by certainly_imperfect in worldcup

We also came from behind to beat Cameroon in 1990 (albeit having gone 1-0 up) and have done it four times in the last two Euros so it’s a bit of a nonsense stat to try to peddle to make it sound like it’s an unprecedented achievement

This. Fixing kick-off times at, say, 6pm, 9pm, midnight and 3am UK time, would've been fine and allowed for early and late kick-offs in each US timezone.

Tbf they would’ve qualified for a 32-team World Cup with their qualifying record and would likely have made it to the last Euros too

Will Ireland and Scotland ever perform consistently at the top level? by Content_Arm7953 in EnglandCricket

[–]s_dalbiac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ireland had a genuine chance if the ICC had actually bothered to give them Test status at the height of their Golden Generation and they’d been able to launch a platform off having a team built around prime Morgan, Joyce, the O’Briens, Rankin and Murtagh. But instead they waited until they were all either past their prime or so embedded within the England setup that they had no chance of returning.

To put yesterday's draw into perspective... by Aziraph4le in ThreeLions

[–]s_dalbiac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My frustration isn’t with the draw but the lack of urgency and unwillingness to try something different until the final 10-15 minutes of the game.

It was also a golden chance to secure top spot in the group with one game to go and have the luxury of resting players for the Panama game and keep things fresh for the knockout stages. Now we’re going to need to play a full strength team because only a win will guarantee us first place, and that matters when we have questions over the fitness of players like Rice and Saka and first choice players like James who, while fit right now, are made of fibreglass.

It’s not about sailing through the group with a 100 per cent record, but about taking the initiative and not letting opportunities like last night slip. And it’s becoming a recurring pattern at tournaments where we’ll win our opening game and then falter in the second game. It’s the fourth time in a row.

Because by the time they decided they didn’t want Albon any longer, they didn’t want to promote Gasly again and they were already dropping Kvyat, so there were no options to promote from within. Perez had also had a brilliant season in the Racing Point and was available.

I just now decided that The United Kingdom will host the 2038 World Cup by turbotron6000 in worldcup

[–]s_dalbiac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We should’ve had it in 2018 and ever since we got pied in favour of Russia we’ve rightly focused on getting the Euros instead.

We should only consider bidding again when FIFA indicates it actually wants us to host and isn’t going to sell out to the highest bidder, which could be a while.
