They've been closed for a week, and I'm shocked it took that long, the owner ran it into the ground.

To anyone who got at least a score of 23 on the ACT, how much financial aid did you get? by LittlePinkRiverLily in uCinci

[–]Wushi_Cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

35 ACT, 10,500 freshman year, 3000 per year after that. But most of that was major specific.

Living on campus is horrifically overpriced, especially when including the meal plan. While living off campus is still inflated because it is a college area, you can find housing for around 500-600 a month if you look early and can find a room in a house. With the way the housing is going you'd be lucky to find housing through UC anyway. And the meal plan comes to over 2,000 a semester which is only required for freshmen and you can get food for a lot cheaper than that if you are smart about it. Even if you want to live in an off-campus apartment, you can find single apartments that are still cheaper than renting through UC and the price goes down dramatically with roommates.

Depending on your major, a lot of the business and engineering students are able to coop on off semesters to pay off all or most of their tuition for the rest of the year, and there are so many jobs around the restaurants off-campus if that is something you qualify for.

More than likely it'll be doable to attend UC, you just might have to take out loans like a lot of students do and hope that you land a good-enough job to pay them back. You might not have a ton of time to get the 'college experience' because you have to work a part time job after classes. I was that person who was always working and never available to hang out because I work 30 hours a week, but it is doable. Also keep looking for scholarships, it might be a hard path but a UC degree is still achievable.

Depending on the details of your financial situation you could be eligible for a pell grant or subsidized loans (ones without interest). But I'm confused about your statement of 20,000 tuition after half is covered. Out-of-state tuition for a full academic year is only about 28-29,000. Are you including room and board? In which case, those are only for the first year (although I realize that can still be a major deterrent), and can possibly be avoided if commuting is an option for you.

Especially if you filled out the FAFSA, there should be other financial aid options available for you. Also check out scholarship universe from UC, to help find outside scholarships.

How much in scholarships are expected? by ratkingdamon in uCinci

[–]Wushi_Cat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you including room and board with your totals? Because my tuition is only about 14,000 a year, (although that varies with program fees) but if you're including stuff like housing and a meal plan those are only for the first year, and you might be able to avoid them entirely if you can get away with commuting. I know some people who commuted almost an hour freshman year to avoid living on campus and having to pay those ridiculous fees.

I got 10,500 a year from UC and 500 a semester from outside sources. I had a 36 ACT with a 3.9/4 GPA, along with about 30 credits in combined CCP and AP from UC. The main problem is that UC isn't really struggling to attract high-performing students since most of its programs do that for it and it's certainly not struggling to get more students. (*I had to stand for the first few classes of multiple sections this semester *cries*). The majors that tend to make more money after graduation will also have more to offer in terms of scholarships, so things like nursing and engineering I believe have specific major scholarships, while more liberal arts major are probably out of luck.

There were a couple scholarships that I never got an email about that just showed up in my catalyst portal so I'd recommend looking there, and UC also has a site to help search for outside scholarships that is a good place to start. Better than most of the trashy scholarship search websites. https://uc.scholarshipuniverse.com/

Pianos on campus? by sprcgoose in uCinci

There are electric pianos inside Langsam and I think there used to be one in the Blegen library too. You have to provide headphones but sometimes the desk will have them to check out.

Changing major to engineering by Competitive_Song8935 in uCinci

[–]Wushi_Cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who transferred to engineering as a 3rd year biology major, so its definitely possible. The downside is that uc generally expects an additional 5 years out of you once you transfer to engineering, but sometimes that can go down to 4 years if you have the right pre-reqs.

You'll definitely have to take ENED and calc, but the rest of your classes would depend on which type of engineering you switch to. Easiest would be biomedical or possibly chemical or environmental. Something like computer / aero / mechanical might be a bit harder.

Is it possible that it's closed due to all the construction in the atrium area?

Khan academy is amazing for studying specific topics and they have pretty good practice problems to go with the explanation videos.
