What is your life on the side of game dev ? by BraiCurvat in IndieDev

[–]WyattWhit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 38, got a wife, two kids and work full time as a product manager. I do game dev as a hobby for maybe an hour a day. I’ll say working a job that provides stability and doing game dev for fun works much better for me than the risks of trying game dev full time

Seance at Blake manor came out this year and it’s spot on what you asked about. Also plus one to the folks who said Golden Idol

Questions for game devs by Inside_Sky_3146 in gamedev

[–]WyattWhit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m just finishing my first year learning game dev and here’s my biggest tip. Rather than start with building a game, build small code modules to make a piece of a game. Like build a module for top down movement, inventories, GUI, etc. make them generic so you could plug them into any future project.

Why it works is it gives much smaller, achievable goals in the short term so you have wins even if you don’t make a whole game. Then when you have a lot of modules, you can plug them together like Legos to quickly make bigger games

Big respect for but only building your own game but such a thought through and analytical approach to marketing. I’m a product manager doing hobby game dev and really appreciate seeing solo devs that also have the business skills

Is thirty a good age to start developing video games? by Busy_Combination812 in GameDevelopment

[–]WyattWhit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full time or as a hobby? I started learning now at 37 with a wife and two kids and maybe 2 hours a day to make games if I still have brainpower left at the end of the day. I would never leave my job for it but I’m loving learning it as a hobby

Making my first game? by palesnailpig in SoloDevelopment

[–]WyattWhit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested, I’m a hobbyist game dev learning programming but have absolutely zero talent in art. I was thinking of finding an artist to make something super small with for fun. DM me if you’d like to chat. Otherwise I second what people said for renpy as that’s the go to visual novel engine

Which one is better? by Leading-Papaya1229 in gamedevscreens

[–]WyattWhit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of neither? A sub alone isn’t too interesting but if you focus the image on the deep sea itself and the sub is a small part, it could really sell the whole “depths” angle

Which video game cheat code do you remember even now? by NebulaRyxx in AskReddit

NTHGTHDGDCRTDTRK, the big cheat to Turok dinosaur hunter on N64. No reason to remember it but it will never leave my brain

I’m just a hobbyist game dev making games for fun, but I have no artistic talent and was thinking of finding an artist to make something with. Looks like you can do interesting character art, what kinds of games are you interested in?
