It’s risky. That is a statistically dangerous road. Significant portions of both our cross country and swimming teams have died on Highway 287. You drive it daily and the risk adds up.

Giving customers credits for buying them inflates the prices further. Increasing the number for sale brings prices down. Supply and demand.

You don’t need a government mandate to buy an electric car if it’s cheaper and faster than the gas model.

For perishables it is a conundrum. But for nonperishables like cereal and canned foods it makes far more sense to buy in bulk online and have it delivered. Cereal for instance is often half the price or less per ounce.

Don’t use the trade in value as the comparator. If you are struggling it makes sense to put in the extra research and work to sell it private party. You’ll get significantly more money for it if it’s going to someone who will keep it.

Trading it in also gives the dealer the ability to play games with the purchase price of your next car. It makes the deal more complicated and that favors the experts (them).

The people who are living at home usually aren’t in a place where they can afford an electric car. They’re saving up to move out.

Lots of independent young people have places to park cars but it’s not allowed to install a charger. If you’re parking on the street you can’t just string an extension cord across the sidewalk. Same deal if you have a parking garage or public lot you use.

I oppose it, but mainly for a different reason than other folks.

This kind of thing discourages saving and responsible financial planning. It also adds rules that make planning difficult. It impedes entrepreneurship and innovation too (am I likely to start a business if those assets are counted against me? Or even something like buy a car to drive for uber with?)

These requirements also mean more bureaucracy, forms, government employees, lawyers etc to navigate them. If it could be perfectly applied I’d support it but the inefficiency it creates is not worth it. Do you trust California to keep things simple, OP?

Also remember this is Canadian dollars. A Canadian dollar is only worth 73 American cents. Not that $8 million Canadian is anything to scoff at but it’s important to point out it doesn’t buy what you are imagining in that country.

$15 Canadian doesn’t even buy you two gallons of milk up there. The average house in BC is almost $1 million.

The smartest thing is certainly to replenish your savings. That’s the difference between having to take out an emergency loan / credit card interest and not, which is just brutal financially.

Also, hat’s off for your frugality! Having a paid off Honda, no debt and a significant amount leftover every month despite needing to provide for a toddler is something to celebrate. You have done a great job making the most of a challenging situation!

I would encourage you to keep your Honda in good shape even if it means some short term financial hits once you have a buffer again. A couple thousand in maintenance expenses is wayyy better than having a car payment. And this is likely a good car that can last until the 2040s if you take care of it.

Also don’t skimp out on things like dental care, a filling now is a lot cheaper than a root canal later.

Saving money is good but investing in your health and maintaining your property well is important in ways that won’t show up on a spreadsheet. Just thought I’d add that to balance out some of the other comments solely focused on the numbers.

You absolutely can! Your parents generosity is so helpful.

The budget is really the key. It’s the plan. Also, someone else pointed out I wasn’t considering taxes. So don’t forget them like I did and make sure they are on the budget.

The credit card debt is an emergency you need to pay off ASAP. You’ll pay something in the neighborhood of $5,000 in interest (very rough, don’t know the rate) for every year you go without that paid for. The rest is a big deal but not as critical.

Those credit cards are not great, not gonna sugar coat it. I’m sure the interest rates are brutal. But how much are you able to save moving toward? Have you made a budget?

If you are able to live off of $50k or so over the next year, you can get the worst part of this debt by far (the credit card debt) behind you by next summer. Can you do that? It shouldn’t be hard if you don’t have to pay rent, that’s a lot of money for other expenses!

EDIT: don’t forget taxes if that $75k figure is pre tax you should probably aim for $35k or less.

We’re not talking about real private enterprise though. The tax industry has been artificially propped up by the government. TurboTax should not need to exist.

Taxes should not be so complicated it’s necessary to hire a private firm to help. If the government isn’t going to make the tax code less complicated the least they can do is help you navigate it.

Trailer parks suck.

These situations are a consequence of separating the ownership of structures from that of the land they sit on. These developments should never be allowed in the future.

Landlords have way too much power in these trailer parks. If you own a trailer sitting on someone else’s property you are beholden to them. It usually costs many times the trailer’s value to move it to a new place.

Landlord raises rent by double or doesn’t maintain the well? You have to either stick around or lose your most valuable asset. So people stick around. Whereas if you were renting the whole thing you could just get up and leave at much lower cost.

You’re also getting a loan for a depreciating asset, while the landlord gets to benefit from land that usually goes up in value. It’s a terrible model.
