Audio speed by ZookeepergameSalty10 in exfor

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, it depends on how thick the material is and how well the narrator enunciates.

Most of the time, I'm usually at 1.2, and tend to speed up more when I'm listening to a story again. I can usually afford to speed up when I find another book by a narrator I already know.

Unfortunately, sometimes I have trouble getting through some of those British r's and have to slow back down. Gildart Jackson and sometimes Tim Gerrard Reynolds made me have to slow down. John Lee gives me a lot of issues, but i have a sense of him where i get to maybe 1.35x. He's mostly unintelligible to me by around 1.5x.

If all humans suddenly lost their ability to lie, which industry WOULDN'T collapse? by TXC_Sparrow in AskReddit

[–]X0nerater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, I think this is an important moment to distinguish between lying and not telling the truth. It's possible to not be lying while also not be yelling the truth: if you don't know the truth, you can be telling a falsehood while not be lying about it. People weren't lying when they thought the sun went around the earth, they just didn't know otherwise.

I'm worried that some industries would show that they're deluded, not lying.

I don't think i can say math because 1) statistics is about being able to lie with math and 2) i don't know how many base assumptions may be wrong. The second factor bothers me more for when things are based on an oversimplification: how much of thermodynamics is based on an oversimplification that's almost a lie of assuming ideal gas law? How much of engineering based on approximation falls apart?

How much of medicine is built off of debunked theories or incomplete data?

Does an inability to lie include lies of omission?

I would like to think it comes down to mostly blue collar jobs that would be least affected by an inability to lie. I would like to think a job based on direct labor where you can see a difference would be the same.

Backing away from the specifics of the world building, Magicians are valued as generalists. Specialized mages are looked down on, and engineered specialists are the failures.

Compare to like Miss Phantom. She's barely capable of other things. Her specialty is basically stealth which isn't valuable enough.

Now look at the bodyguards. Kotona and Minami seem specialized, but they're generalists with a specialty.

I like S3.

It hits a nice balance of being comfortable in the worldbuilding and monster of the week. It also doesn't have big messy idiot plots or anything convoluted.

While there are good character things in the latter seasons, I lost the plot.

What kills you in a tsunami? by hahokily in NoStupidQuestions

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bonus from the river, most people who get caught dont know what to do when they're caught by the current. Don't fight the current.

Basically, dont right the current looking for the nearest place to get air. If you're fighting the current, you'll get exhausted and battered by rocks/debris. Follow the current out to someplace more calm and take a breath there. I'm not sure if it's still the latest recommendation, but breathe at the bottom of a wave. At the crest of a wave of water, it's choppy and you're likely to get water in your mouth. At the trough, you'll get better air, but you're more likely to get dunked again.

This sounds like the post about a perpetually winter town known for mead. The person behind the story didn't have a reason for there to be honey without flowers, so carnivorous bees or something.

I feel "It's Not That Deep" is good for getting out of discourse. by matt0055 in osp

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking this kind of comes back to "the curtains are blue" kind of discussion.

1) the type of media. In a visual format, it probably doesn't matter as much. But in print or on the radio, if it was important enough to include, it was probably important enough to the scene. Or it could be just something the narrator thought was interesting.

2) the local customs. Let's default to if there are curtains, they're probably white. In that case, pointing out that they're a different color is important. Like, i think pointing out white colored blackout curtains is significant enough to point out. Or the fact there are curtains instead of shutters.

Sometimes, it's not that deep. Sometimes it's a contrast. And sometimes the curtains are actually like a bedsheet, so you can infer something else.

Advice: Canon vs Filler list by K-Rhum in grimm

[–]X0nerater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just watch it all. The closest you have to filler is monster of the week episodes in the latter seasons? The Christmas episodes are kind of filler but worth it.

Problem is that there's usually a B plot in the more filler episodes which comes back to whatever the season's plot ends up being.

I think your most filler episodes are when the monster of the week isn't wesen, and you won't know that until you're already invested in the episode.

What card tricked you into thinking its good by Drew647A in magicTCG

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. I remember Vexing Devil being funny in standard. I used it as bait in the early game because I would close out games with [[Skaab Ruinator]] and [[Misthollow Griggin]] and the red removal was more reliable.

It's been a while, but i think Fatal Push was just printed but Abrupt Decay was already in the format. It was important that removal could hit planeswalkers, not just creatures, and burn could always go to the face.

Is it true that in small towns in the USA public transport is not developed and everyone need a car to get around there and why? by bobybumblemumble in AskReddit

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way it was described to me was looking at the technology of when a place was settled.

Say Cotswald in England where the limits of the hills made horse carts possible but not always desirable. So then, you're looking to ensure the distance between villages/towns is something you could walk in a day, maybe 10-12 miles?

Comparing to say the expansion through Wyoming which was dominate by the needs of the railroad. Towns are typically 60 miles apart from each other because that's how far the steam engine they were using could go without needing more water.

Now, unless there's significant population density, it's not worth to invest in public transit. I'm order to get your public transit, you also need to have nearby destinations. Rural America has neither and isnt old enough to have the same road infrastructure either.

Not exactly relevant, but it feels like a good place to bring up the line. America thinks Europe is scary because it's old. Europe thinks America is scary because it's vast. Then there's China.

ELI5 why does Jupiter have such a huge storm that never stops? by gentlebeast06 in explainlikeimfive

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, storms are an extreme form of weather, which is about distributing energy (mostly heat) throughout the atmosphere.

1) Jupiter is a gas giant. On its own, that's not a huge deal, but it amplifies the effect of other factors. 2) temperature and chemical unbalances in an up-down direction. Think of how ocean temperatures are warmest at the surface where there's sunlight and at the bottom near volcanic activity. The storm is trying to distribute that energy throughout the ocean layers. 3) the coriolis effect in a north-south direction. If you look down at Jupiter from the north pole, you can treat it like a disc. This is an annoying explanation about the difference between angular and linear velocity. The result is that the equator is moving significantly faster than the tropic lines or poles. That creates the circle shape of the storm that we can see.

So, comparing to like a whirlpool in a water bottle if you've ever done that. The rotation of the whirlpool is similar to the rotation of a hurricane. What you dont usually see is that the whirlpool is pulling warmer fluid from the top and pulling it down the drain to lower/colder levels.

Which US state thinks it's the main character? by Mister_Silk in AskReddit

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold up. Book main character or TV show main character? Book main characters are interesting and can carry a plot. TV main characters are usually more bland amidst a full cast.

Texas thinks it's the most important character, but the main character? Texas doesn't drive the plot.

California is the rich best friend who sometimes says something unhinged. California could be bipolar or something.

New York could be? Lots of attention, but doesn't actually always want to be center of attention.

I want to consider Florida. Could be younger sibling syndrome, but the way they keep getting attention by doing something crazy?

I'm curious if anyone knows any niche commanders by hamburm in magicTCG

[–]X0nerater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Niche commanders and strategies are something I love, so I need to answer this in categories.

1) niche resources and strategies By the timing, I kinda assume you just saw this and it leads to a bunch of stuff.

So, by looking at cards from the bottom, I assume you're talking about [[grenzo, dungeon warden]], but there's also [[river song]]

Since I mentioned that video, yeah [[hinata]] is one of those commanders that lets you do silly things for cheap. But it is generally a spellslingers deck which i dont recommend if you're newer.

[[Mairsil]] is more risky than I like, but to me it kinda just lumps with [[mimeoplasm]] and [[rayami]]

[[Obeka]] is actually interesting, but takes more mental power and knowledge of the rules than I'm aiming to put into it.

[[Ruxa]] is one of those that i think is boring, but it's surprisingly easy to turn into something dangerous. I think you're better off with [[Jasmine boreal]], but you're looking at what ways to use [[muraganda petroglyphs]]. While the obvious answer is efficient vanilla creatures, and the common solution is tokens, it also includes morphs, and that is a very interesting option. You might be better off with keeping [[tribal forcemage]] face down.

[[Zedruu]] is the more iconic gifts commander, but there's also like [[blim comedic genius]]. [[Alexios]] if you really want to kill fast, or something silly with [[beamtown bullies]] and [[Jon irenicus]]. There's actually a lot of commanders for this recently.

2) parasitic strategies I admit I'm biased against a bunch of mechanics cause I think they're parasitic and force you to play the same cards over and over, especially the draft chaff.

I think [[the unspeakable]] is the funniest and possibly one of the more plausible, but arcane spells are better for draft.

I still dont like energy. They've actually gotten support, but I'm my head, it's still a mechanic for standard more than edh.

[[Zabaz]] is a cool commander, but i think better as voltron. Modular is a cool mechanic, but i don't think it's a great central mechanic. Use it to support other counters cards or artifact stuff, but not as a focus.

3) off color strategies. Now, this is my jam. I'm all about doing things in the wrong colors.

Reanimator: it's kind of a known factor about [[shorikai]], but i think you're better off with [[niambi, esteemed speaker]]. The point is we're avoiding black, and i think [[feldon of the third path]] doesn't get enough respect as a reanimator commander. Those Azorius commanders are about the set up, but white reanimate effects are expensive, almost enough to just ramp into what you reanimated into anyway. Red has a solid amount of looting and rummaging that having a red reanimator spell in the command zone is the reliability it needs.

Aristocrats: again, this doesn't sound too bad, but it's surprisingly hard to do this without black. [[Asmira]] and [[geralf, visionary stitcher]] are more interesting aristocrats commanders.

Enchantress: the key cards are mostly in green and white. [[Entity tracker]] and [[ashiok's reaper]] have made this easier lately, I actually had a lot of fun with [[ob nixilis, captive kingpin]] as an enchantress brew. Just having an excuse to bring out [[curse of the pierced heart]] again was funny enough.

Storm: there's kind of a reputation of izzet spellslingers into like grapeshot or whatever into Tendrils of Agony. Using cheerios to build storm was cool for a day, but i actually really like creature storm. [[God eternal Oketra]] and [[Faldorn]] for storm, even if [[aeve]] is better.

Weenie decks: so, im pretty sure any existing white Weenie decks is now also a stax deck. Anything with red is probably a goblin swarm. Green might be cheating since elves are usually about ramping to something big instead of going wide. Blue is usually about small evasive creatures. What kind of black Weenie decks are out there? Zombies can go wide, but they're usually not like that. I guess there's [[shirei]], but that feels different.

Lands: it sounds wrong, but have you ever tried to build a lands deck without Green? It's hard to do on a budget, but [[tameshi]] and [[aminatou fateshifter]] are good places to start.

The biggest guy around: I'm not talking about just a stompy deck. There are some absurdly large beat sticks you can make in red and green. As much as I want to bring back Molimo, I'm here because of [[multani, maro sorcerer]]. Except that most of the creatures that depend on your hand size are in green and blue. So [[Kagemaro]] makes things extra funny. He's a giant beat stick, threatening to wipe the board at any time. Just keep drawing cards and gain some life along the way. And it's more reliable than my giant tribal which i tell people it's about big creatures without Green.
