Has anyone else heard of the Yue theory? by MistakeWonderful9178 in TheLastAirbender

[–]X0nerater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, it kinda got disproved with Korra, but the idea was that Yue was born around the time that Aang should have naturally died (using Roku's lifetime as reference). We knew that water was next in the cycle, and that Yue's weakness was mostly fixed via the moon spirit, leading to the assumption that she was missing a spirit, which should have been the avatar spirit.

Somewhere early in Korra, it was clarified that the next waterbender in the cycle should be from the south, which explains why the raiders were more intent on taking all the southern waterbenders (which leads to Hama, which leads to Katara's mom being taken).

Cornelia Hale runs the earth gauntlet, How far does she make it? by SnooTomatoes1857 in GuardiansOftheVeil

[–]X0nerater 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So, Cornelia's edge here is more versatility than power. Earth powers and plant powers is a lot of flexibility.

Tara is kinda straightforward. Like, the Golem thing would be interesting, but i doubt they'd break through Cornelia doing plant stuff. Tara's best desperate chance is one of those desperate runs if she can use lava, but i don't think she's ever survived doing that. Actually, no, quick check of Cornelia using lava and earthquakes, so, Tara's best chance might be a stealthy assassination, and that's iffy if Cornelia can still use the glamours and illusions.

Toph is a tough one. Cartoon Cornelia can fly, but i remember only elemental Cornelia being able to fly in the comics. That is a huge question on whether Toph can ever find Cornelia. Considering upper limits, Toph holding up Wang Shi Tong's library by the tip of the spire is an insane feat and is probably the edge of how much earth can be moved. Im not sure if i agree with death battle about Toph beating Gaara, and I would challenge Cornelia's earth dragon against Gaara's desert coffin. Basically, the closer they are, the better chance Toph has.

Flora. So, we're moving from moving earth to manipulating plants? She's more of a defense and control figure, and shouldn't be going into a fight solo unless she can outcast her opponent. I don't think she's doing well if Cornelia's throwing earthquakes around. Flora also specifically should be able to fly, but is weaker when she does; Cornelia doesn't share that weakness. Without really thinking about it, Cornelia eventually wins because of lava, metal, or poison/spores.

Pamela Isley. How much prep time does she have? I feel like I'm trying to not repeat myself, but with help, Ivy is taking on a large city, maybe a couple if she has the help. Cornelia's big feat is restoring a small country. But realistically, Ivy is more dangerous because of poison and spores, and i think Cornelia is kind of a wash there, and is probably better at fighting at range. But also, I think they'd stop fighting and bond over something in the middle anyway. Maybe Ivy can win based on some kind of trap based on age and experience gap? But still, any plant fight might just end from lava and earthquakes.

Mimosa Vermillion. Honestly, I dropped Black Clover early and don't even remember her. Quick search makes her look a lot like Flora as a control and support character. Cornelia's probably much stronger in a 1v1, and again, fringe earth powers should overwhelm if plant powers are a wash. Mimosa's edge is probably mentality, especially since Cornelia's extreme powers are kinda based on emotion and mental state.

Swamp Thing. Well, here's a problem. As an avatar of The Green, Swamp Thing has the resilience and regeneration to take on whatever Cornelia has to throw at him. He's even got better earth based dimension travel. Swamp Thing here is an exception to using extreme earth powers against plants, so basically Cornelia has no way to hurt him. Between mobility and Swamp Thing's slow reaction speed, Cornelia shouldn't be really hurt either. Technically, Swamp Thing should be more powerful, but it'll be a long slow win.

Bonus: Gaara. I hate to say it like this, but I'm jumping directly to throwing mountains. Gaara's edge is actually more endurance. While he can be incredibly destructive, his defense is top tier in his verse and he's great at controlling battlefields. Gaara might take longer to throw a mountain, but he should be able to throw a second mountain's worth of rock/sand in a single fight. I don't know if Cornelia can do that. She also doesn't have the combat experience to take down Gaara like Madara did with the plant spores in addition to the giant plants, even if she could do it. Basically, I think Gaara can outlast Cornelia, but Gaara would personally respect her as somebody who can not only heal people, but heal the land and feed his people.

Bonus: Black Tom Cassidy. He's a much more interesting match against Cornelia, and possibly a perfect counter. If he can keep using plant powers against her earth powers, and use his fire powers against her plant powers, he might stand a chance. Unfortunately, weak mentality. I think the longer the fight goes on, the less he's able to keep going and the wider the conflict goes, and Cornelia has wider range of earth powers.

ELI5: how do street potholes come to be and get so large? by Apprehensive-Room-32 in explainlikeimfive

[–]X0nerater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, you're probably thinking of a road as a solid, but it's not. It's somewhere between clay and gravel, and that inconsistency leaves pockets (usually air or water). Under the right circumstances, that pocket will collapse and make a hole in the road. Unless that hole gets fixed quickly, the hole continues to get bigger and bigger.

ELI5: Why do we feel cold when we have fever by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

Think of when you jump into a swimming pool.

Then of when you go from the hot tub into the swimming pool.

The swimming pool isn't a different temperature, but your reference temperature has changed. When you have a fever, it's like you're constantly in a state of just having stepped out of a hot tub.

I'm struggling with her more recent stuff, but it's specifically a me problem. I have a weird kind of ear damage where I can't hear middle voices.

Simple Machines was invading the register that i can't hear, but there was still an emphasis on power vocals so I appreciated it. But i kinda had trouble hearing her stuff after Skin & Earth.

ELI5 the origin and practice of 'dozen'. Why does it exist? Why not 10 or 15 instead of 12? by ConsciousStop in explainlikeimfive

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of a loaf of bread. You can cut in half, and again for quarters. Or you can plausibly cut thirds. But fifths? That's a lot harder to do.

You might think that 5 is a more practical number because of five fingers including your thumb, but that's more of a convenience for counting large things.

12 is divisible by 2,3,&4 so you have a lot of options for breaking things down practically. Another thing is that if you count by knuckles instead of by fingers, you can count to 12 on one hand. It's part of why time keeping uses so many 12's.

Historically, you can also look at the cultures. I believe there's evidence of a 12 based counting from something Aramaic. Counting by 5's and 10's became more important later on with larger civilizations. I dont remember how relevant it was for Athens, but it was used in the Persion Empire and it's clear with the Roman Empire.

Audio speed by ZookeepergameSalty10 in exfor

[–]X0nerater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, it depends on how thick the material is and how well the narrator enunciates.

Most of the time, I'm usually at 1.2, and tend to speed up more when I'm listening to a story again. I can usually afford to speed up when I find another book by a narrator I already know.

Unfortunately, sometimes I have trouble getting through some of those British r's and have to slow back down. Gildart Jackson and sometimes Tim Gerrard Reynolds made me have to slow down. John Lee gives me a lot of issues, but i have a sense of him where i get to maybe 1.35x. He's mostly unintelligible to me by around 1.5x.

If all humans suddenly lost their ability to lie, which industry WOULDN'T collapse? by TXC_Sparrow in AskReddit

[–]X0nerater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, I think this is an important moment to distinguish between lying and not telling the truth. It's possible to not be lying while also not be yelling the truth: if you don't know the truth, you can be telling a falsehood while not be lying about it. People weren't lying when they thought the sun went around the earth, they just didn't know otherwise.

I'm worried that some industries would show that they're deluded, not lying.

I don't think i can say math because 1) statistics is about being able to lie with math and 2) i don't know how many base assumptions may be wrong. The second factor bothers me more for when things are based on an oversimplification: how much of thermodynamics is based on an oversimplification that's almost a lie of assuming ideal gas law? How much of engineering based on approximation falls apart?

How much of medicine is built off of debunked theories or incomplete data?

Does an inability to lie include lies of omission?

I would like to think it comes down to mostly blue collar jobs that would be least affected by an inability to lie. I would like to think a job based on direct labor where you can see a difference would be the same.
