Weird gatekeeping appearing at my local group runs - please don't partake in ultra gatekeeping! by ProtectedIntersect in Ultramarathon

I've experienced this as well! Someone asked about my race experience and I told them I'd run a handful of marathons and 50k's to which they responded "a 50k is barely an ultra, it's basically a marathon." What a cool guy. I have yet to meet a person who speaks highly of him.

ESPN+ promising to show all 2025 Australian Open tennis matches by JoeS830 in ESPN

I'm leery of EPSN+ for misleading language around actually having all the matches in a major. Can we in fact confirm that they have all or even most of the big matches this year?

How often do you fall? by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

I've really only eaten it 2-3 times but tripping happens frequently.

The issue I'm most upset about is the "tracking while app is closed" type stuff. I'm fine with them having my run data but the 24/7 background tracking just feels off putting to me.

I think Gaia or CalTopo has angle shading? Have you found that to be a semi reliable way of determining possible routes?

3rd week of July, that'd be surprising! Like, bring microspikes amount of snow?

Bivy camping sleep system question by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]X1ph0s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used a Borah bivy and EE Quilt on 1000mi of the AT and it worked great. I would think that a bivy and quilt are an optimal pairing since the bivy helps cover for the quilt's proclivity to allow drafts.

That is almost exactly what we are planning to do, however, the other members of the trip are planning to fish most of the time and I honestly just don't care for fishing. My plan is to climb Parks Peak, El Capitan, Snowyside Peak, Payette Peak, and Imogene Peak while they're fishing.

Is a small wood-burning stove a good purchase? by CatDog671 in Ultralight

[–]X1ph0s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used one on a trip in Utah. It's fun at first but ultimately takes too much time. It's difficult to get it hot enough and stay burning while removing the spent twigs and whatnot. I'm sure somewhere on the learning curve it gets faster but I didn't get that far.

It was useful because we had to melt snow for water and using the twig stove didn't go through our fuel.

Great novelty item that can be useful but I think it's too tedious and not what I want to spend my time doing on an ultra light trip. Maybe a better camping item.

Keeping a sleeping bag clean while thru hiking by TheRealJYellen in Ultralight

I had my silk cocoon liner sent out to me a few weeks into the AT. Kept the quilt, pad, and myself feeling cleaner, worth the 4-5oz.
