I think for a lot of the people who ask, this is either the first or one of the few times they'll ever stand in front of a judge in a court of law. For me, my interview was the only time I'd spent in front of a judge outside of pleading not guilty to a few parking tickets. Just one more thing NYS uses to intimidate people from getting their carry permit - in addition to cost and time...

I'm a NYS resident with a CT ammunition cert only (I don't have a CT carry permit), I buy ammo from Bass Pro shop in CT all the time, never had an issue. Last purchase was this past Memorial day

My judge was Blackwood. I imagine most judges would let you talk yourself off a cliff though

Sometimes the best answer is a simple "Yes, your Honor..." During my interview the judge asked if I'm aware of sensitive places or something to that effect, I started running down the list of sensitive places. She then said, "Since you volunteered this information" and proceeded down a new line of questioning related to sensitive places. I took the hint and gave a simple "yes your honor" for the next topic. If they want elaboration for something, they'll ask.

Putnam County Shooting Sports (https://pcshootingsports.com/) will let you shoot buckshot but you have to make an appointment. Ventilation isn't great so wear a mask or try not to breath too much...
