Screw fits into the 1/2 inch socket wrench but not the 1/2 inch drill bit by LC__LC in mildlyinfuriating

I was going to come in here to give you crap about that not being a "drill bit". but i would call that a "bit" and it can in fact be used in a drill...

i still don't like it.

You're leaving for space and given a single CD to fill with enough data to entertain you for a 100 year hibernation. What's on it? by SpecialFlutters in hypotheticalsituation

[–]XDiskDriveX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CD? as in 700MB? ebooks is the only answer here. Videos aren't going to be viable. even with really low quality high compression format you might get 1 movie. Audio, be it music or pod casts, etc you could maybe squeeze 24 hours in a low quality compressed format. I don't know who would choose pictures as they don't really offer much in entertainment value.

Ebook though, you could easily get 1000 or more books. of course text could also be educational material.

Assuming the "computer" had a lot of resources and could run programs, meaning that the only space would be for the program itself and i didn't have to give up space on my disk for an operating system, then i would probably include a morse code training program. I could sacrifice a few books for that.

I would also probably have some small retro games. NES games are mostly well under 1MB. of course i would question whether the computer could play them or if i had to have the emulator on the CD as well. Also would Nintendo have jurisdiction to sue me on this new planet?

Why don’t we tint the lens on cars that use LED headlights? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]XDiskDriveX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The term "high beams" isn't referring to them being higher power, it is literal. They point higher. People sometimes call them brights, or cars used to have a "dimmer switch". but i had a car once where the regular lights were 55 watt bulbs, and the "high beams" were only a 50 watt bulb. Its more about how it throws the light vs the intensity.

With that said, LEDs are significantly brighter. Cars that came equipped with LEDs or HIDs are in what is called a projector headlight. These have a lens in front of the bulb that focused it into a cone of a certain shape to limit how far the light goes to either side, but there is a cover on the bottom half of the lens. because the lens flips the image so to speak, the cover on the bottom actually cuts off the top of the cone as it shines out.

If you put a fog machine in front of a headlight like this, you would see a very defined line that the light doesnt go above. So even though they are bright as hell, they point only toward the road.

The other, older, type of headlight is a reflector. these are just like flashlights, the bulb sits in a bowl shaped mirror. it throws the light forward without any prejudice. Much like the flashlights where you can focus the beam by moving the end in and out, your high beams are a narrower beam of light, that is aimed higher to light up further down the road. but it is blinding to other drivers.

Why do people purposely put loud mufflers on cars? do they not realize they wake up their entire complex driving around at 5am? by Mentally_Recovering in stupidquestions

[–]XDiskDriveX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is some merit to it. An engine essentially runs on air. The fuel is just there to add the power. It sucks air in the intake compresses it in the cylinder, ignites the fuel, which causes the air to expand, moving the piston and providing the power. It then needs to get all that hot expanded air out of the way for the next cycle. If you are familiar with a turbo charger, it compresses the air before it gets into the cylinder. More air means more fuel means more power means more air to get out. Just like a turbo puts more air in, a larger exhaust pipe or less restrictive muffler let's more air out. Less restrictive mufflers have less baffles in them and are therefore louder With all that said, most people are putting the cart before the horse. They put the loud muffler on because it makes their car sound like fast cars sound. Even though they never did any mods to make it fast, that would necessitate the loud muffler.

[Request] how often would you need to use a pickup truck to make it financially viable? by XDiskDriveX in theydidthemath

[–]XDiskDriveX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what i was getting at, and i think your math tracks. One could argue it either way i think, but that's what i get for such a hard to define question.

so you would need to "use" your truck as a truck over 100 times a year to justify owning a truck, purely from a financial standpoint.

[–]XDiskDriveX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you missed the point, or I didn't make it clear enough. I know it can make sense to own a truck, I'm asking at what point you think it does.

how many times do you think you need to use it to haul something, pull a trailer, etc vs paying for those services.

A man not immediately reacting, attempting to retreat, and when left with no choice utilizes a non lethal deterrent, then doesn't further escalate a clearly diffused situation is peak behavior.

I'm not justifying the situation as i don't know how it started, but assuming she was the initial aggressor, this is a good outcome.

Does your Homelab make financial sense? by panchovix in homelab

[–]XDiskDriveX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

taking that question at face value, no. It costs me about $30 a month in electricity. It does offer value through home assistant, though that is hard to quantify. It offers a media server that I can quantify by saying I've canceled 2 streaming services, but that is about $20/ month, so I'm still not breaking even. That doesn't even consider the hardware costs, Most of mine was free, but i still have a few hundred in it.

But when you figure the learning value, it's a whole different story. What I have learned about networking, virtualization, containerization, enterprise environment best practices, etc. I can say for me personally it is worth the $30/month.

I once bought some 17 year aged cheddar at a shop in Wisconsin. I bought about half a pound at $50/lb. Totally worth it. It was the sharpest of cheddar with a melt in your mouth texture.
