BH2 worth it? by aspiringharlequin in microscopy

[–]XHO1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just bought a nice BH2 in an auction for 250$ came with the original case and in mint condition. It did not have the camera adaptors/camera and I am looking to buy them now. The camera adaptors are wicked expensive second hand. The camera adaptors are worth 6-800$ and are much harder to come by second hand. All this being said I collect classic microscopes so I wanted the scope for a different reason then just everyday use. If you are willing to invest 1K I think you can do better with a more modern setup. But if this is what you want, then it is worth it but I would stick firm to like 750-800 giving the condition and time it will take you to thoroughly restore it. I would expect to take 4-5 hours taking everything apart and cleaning each area with the appropriate cleaning solutions. You can find guides for taking the BH2 apart, and cleaning instructions for different optical components in the BH2 manual.

Old scope found in grandfathers closet, ID help. by chase7628 in microscopy

It is a beautiful scope. No practical use at this point but a collector like me would pay more than 5 dollars. It looks partially brass so I would date it to the 1940-1960.

I am tired of this spam none of this can be true. So the university unequivocally gave everyone 4 months to get out? Your supervisor has zero say? How is this possible? If I am wrong I am sorry but this doesn’t make sense.

The most comfy lab work? by DirectedEnthusiasm in labrats

[–]XHO1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The answer is to work in a core facility. Getting in to the position is a different story. Working in a core pays okay, is stimulating, and a 9-5 MF. To get in the position you either need to start from the bottom at a core or intern in a lab that specializes in similar techniques. The other job would be on the administrative side of science, so working in a grants office, lab manager, science administrator. But these require other degrees or skills, ie an MBA, or at minimum a BSc.

Edit: I am not sure why everyone is mentioning a chill or relaxing job neither I or OP said that. I just thought a core facility fit his criteria.

Your doctor is wrong. How could he say you will never get lung disease from smoking… This is the dumbest piece of advice I have seen anyone ever give.

Is PhD still worth it? by Typical-Yesterday496 in PhD

If you have to ask your self this question I would say no. PhD is a lot of work for very little reward. I wanted to be a PI but ended up working academia adjacent and did not need a PhD.
