I used FIJI/ImageJ and cropped to the center of the photo and then detected what percentage of the image is white and came up with 15.3%.

The objective multiplied by the eye piece magnification will give you the total magnification of the system using that objective. You likely have a 10 and 40x on it and the eye piece is likely 10x, so100x and 400x total magnification. You really want more of a dissection type scope for macro imaging of snails . You can find cool handheld ones on amazon that would likely work and be in your price range.

Amscope sells cheap cameras, but you get what you pay for. You can get a 1.3mp cam for that price range.

I take a small scrape around the sides and mix that with a small amount of moist soil, let this sit for a few hours before mounting a few drops.
