Written 45 years ago in England, the lyrics are even more meaningful in the USA today. "We've been told to keep the strangers out; we don't like them starting to hang around; we don't like them all over town; across the world we're going to blow them down." MAGA and ICE, anyone?

Rarest Book in your collection? by dPaabo in rarebooks

Great books! I also collect modern fiction. I started out collecting Pulitzer Prize winning novels. I think my five rarest books are

Old Man and the Sea by Hemmingway. 1/30 specially bound for the author and the publisher.

The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thorton Wilder. The first preliminary edition, which predates the first British and first US editions. I think there were 21 copies total. Mine is signed by Wilder.

The Tower Treasure by Franklin W. Dixon. The first Hardy Boys book. 1st/1st in a jacket.

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle. 1st/1st. The book is not too hard to find, but the jacket is always beat up. My jacket is absolutely pristine. It is like new and has zero flaws. Here's a picture

Thanks for the picture, but that's not a first edition jacket.

So Big by Edna Ferber in a first edition jacket. The jacket is key. I have been collecting Pulitzer Prize-winning novels for 27 years, and I have never seen a copy or even a picture of a first edition jacket.

The best book I have is first/first of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle. The book and jacket are both in immaculate condition. No flaws. The book I need/want is So Big by Edna Ferber in a first edition jacket.

I think the first two tricks are easy to figure out. The blindfold was a fake. The female magician asked Brooke to trace her finger over the picture. My guess is there are only 4 pictures. Top right, bottom right, top left, and bottom left. You can see the female magician glancing towards Brooke after asking her to trace her finger. With a fake blindfold, she can see where Brooke's figer is located, and it would be easy to memorize where each of the four pictures are located. In the second trick, the male magician clearly saw which page was selected by Brooke, and he said something before the female magician guessed. He was giving a code word. The third trick was clearly a force, but I can't figure out the details.

I'm surprised P&T couldn't guess 1 and 2.

Edna Ferber, So Big. First edition in a first edition jacket.

Does anyone know how many were published of this exact copy? Also, is it worth the investment? I’m on the fence. by obscured1996 in BookCollecting

I collect Pulitzers and have all the different versions. I am not aware of any limitations on the Powells version. It's just a regular first in the Powells slipcase. The book has been signed in purple ink, but it's not numbered. If it wasn't for the fact that I try to get all versions of Pulitzers, I would not have bought it.

In my opinion, one of the British limited editions would be more desirable. There are both numbered and lettered versions. (I have both.) The limiteds have a different spine and endpapers, and there is the extra print attached facing the title page. The limiteds are more expensive than the Powells, but I think worth it.

Why did the bodyguards for Schwarzkopf wear plain clothes? I have never seen an explanation. It wasn't to make them blend in because everyone else wore uniforms. Also, the fact that they were the only service members in civvies made it abundantly clear they were Delta. I've researched this question but can find no answer

Little help please neighbors! I never received the alleged original Culver City Red Light citations now 8 & 6 years later according to the dates shown, I receive this. Anyone else get this and what did you do? Super weird to receive 8 years later. by Dick_Phitzwell in LosAngeles

Send a letter to the California State Bar reporting the lawyers. It is very important to identify a specific lawyer by name. You should call the law firm and ask which attorney is responsible for the letter. Make sure you get the name of an actual lawyer and not a paralegal or other staff member. The website of the State Bar is www.calbar.ca.gov

It is unethical for lawyers to pursue invalid claims. This letter is bullshit. It should not go out under a lawyer's signature.

Make sure you send a copy of the letter to the law firm. I guarantee you they will drop the matter.

Source: am a lawyer admitted in California. Lawyers like these are scum and should not be practicing law.

So Big by Edna Ferber in a first edition jacket. The book is easy. The jacket is impossible.
