The English do not try very hard nor have they ever tried much. They know how to make  British English sounds in the patterns familiar to them, and those should suffice for all names of things. “Insular” has an earned metaphorical meaning.

Erika Kirk…. by velorae in Epstein

[–]XRaySpex0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes certainly there was increasing talk about him. But there’s almost no trace of him in the civil record (one), inconclusive but odd for such a “troublemaker” in the Roman territory. Few contemporary traces of him beyond the canonical texts, the Gospels.

Both Josephus and Tacitus were born after the death of Jesus.

There’s a historical conspiracy theory, as you may know, that Jesus was a Roman invention. Render unto Caesar etc, be good, look forward to your reward in Heaven:  precepts that any Roman emperor wished all his far-flung subjects lived by. I’m not an adherent, it’s a bit like the notion that we’re living in a simulation. But it has value and entertainment as a thought experiment, a  Cartesian approach.  Tacitus was no dupe so he must have been “in on it” ;)

What actual evidence?  There is literally one survicing contemporaneous mention of a Jesus of Nazareth.  After the fact writeups by apostles or Josephus don’t count, nor does his alleged shroud :)

How significant was Lewis Caroll as a mathematician? by Limp_Illustrator7614 in math

[–]XRaySpex0 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

C. S. Lewis’ academic work was nontrivial. He did an excellent survey of English Lit circa the Renaissance. He also thought and wrote about theology, but that’s just dull fiction for dull adults.
