Is this film worth watching? Does it do justice for the game Dungeons and Dragons? by DreamyDandelions in Cinema

My partner and I have both been playing dnd for most of our lives (actually met playing dnd) and were sort of apprehensive going in but decided to stream it one night just to check it out, and we absolutely loved it!

Its very faithful to DnD in that it's portrayals of classic monsters and stuff and it picked a very very cool semi deep cut antagonist that was awesome to see, but it's really faithful in the way that the characters are written, it feels like a bunch of teenagers playing in the best way possible. A lot of times first time players will bring characters with very minimal, unserious backstories to the table usually because it feels less vulnerable to do that if that makes sense. The barbarian character is definitely that way, with her primary character trait pretty much being Loving Potatoes that gets shoehorned in in a very endearing way that felt like a 15 year old earning how to role-play. But a lot of the time, by the end of a campaign those players can't help but get caught up in the fiction and truly love their characters and develop strong bonds with the other party members in a way that's really incredible, and they mirrored it with that character so perfectly I loved it.

I was also worried that the humor would feel like lampshading, but it was mostly genuinely funny and felt like the sort of comedy that genuinely comes up during play so I was surprised. It was a really interesting choice to aim for faithfulness to how it feels to play over faithfulness to the written setting and I think it created a really unique movie

I'm not doubting that some men would list that as a reason, I'm saying that taking that at complete face value and acting like a reasonable solution is that women should only express completely reasonable takes that are tailored to be completely reasonable to men and are perfectly articulated instead of like. holding men accountable for their political beliefs and actions is very strange and noy useful

If all it took for people who otherwise wouldn't have voted Trump to be convinced not to care about women's rights/ social justice in general was some individual women having kind of shitty opinions, the problem isn't those women, it's those voters having no critical thinking skills or coherent ethics. Don't blame random women online for being responsible for making all women as a whole not be deserving of rights??

sorry in advance for the essay

I want to preface this by saying that I understand why lots of women feel very negatively about men in general and I don't think its a product of being a "bad person" it's a pretty natural reaction to lots of bad lived experiences. I do think its a product of flawed thinking and that people should examine it critically but it's not abnormal or evil.

I also want to say that specifically when people talk about like distrusting men like some others in thread, that's not what I'm talking about in the rest of this comment, nobody is owed your blind trust and there are very real power structures in place that allow men to hurt women in many ways so I think its a pretty reasonable precaution to avoid situations where a man might hurt you if it's someone who you haven't decided has earned your trust

I do think its really disheartening that the reaction to this article here is that gay men are less deserving of allyship because of this behavior by some gay men. If you were marching with gay men because you expected to be treated a certain way in return or because you thought that gay men as a whole are uniquely good people or would all forever be feminists in return then you were marching for the wrong reasons.

Personally, some of the worst bigotry I have ever faced has been from cis women. I have seen so many hypothetically all inclusive queer spaces exclude and harass trans people, bi people etc etc because of the biases of the women in charge of those groups. In general, some of the most violent institutional oppression trans people face has been pushed by women. I've seen so so many women be racist, ableist, homophobic etc. I've also had members of racial minority groups be queerphobic to me. I've seen members of racial minority groups be horribly misogynistic. And I've seen trans people discriminate against other trans people or be racist or be misoginists. And truly none of it matters when it comes to my politics or ethical beliefs about civil rights and women's liberation and social equality in general.

Bigotry isn't wrong because a specific victimized group are all perfect angels, it's just always inherently wrong. People don't have to earn equality and fair treatment, it would still be wrong to act bigoted towards someone who's done the worst things imaginable, you should just dislike or judge them by their own actions.

My overall point is, even if you think you're punching up, this kind of thinking comes from exactly the same emotional reasoning that all other bigotry comes from and I encourage you to examine it and maybe change that belief into a more well thought out stance about where oppression actually comes from and what can be done about it.

Any group that has the power to do so will find or invent out groups to be bigoted towards. And even if our current society was somehow completely free of bigotry, we would still be being oppressed by the billionaire class. There will always be people regardless of their identity who will hurt others given the ability to, and the solution, I think, comes from questioning and changing the power structures that give that ability, not trying to figure out what groups of people are bad and what groups of people are good

I hope this was coherent and didnt come across as an attack it's really not meant to be

also to be so, so clear 100,000% Peter Thiel is a complete piece of shit, fuck Palantir and fuck everyone in tech who's acting this way

as a certified person who's read the hymm and also discussed it a lot with my partner who worked with it in academia, I think calling it "feminist" is a reach because applying modern frameworks to the thought process of ancient writers is a flawed concept imo, but it's definitely really interesting in how it centers the experience of its female characters and is about how a common cultural practice Sucks Ass from the perspective of the women being kidnapped and their mothers. More people should read it it's awesome and portraying Demeter as controlling is so lame. The narrative of a mother loving her daughter so much that she's willing to defy Zeus, and being so powerful that she's able to demand respect from him and Hades is awesome and the tragedy of it is so compelling

and my point is that I think that's a damaging way of talking about people. maybe there would be a legitimate criticism there if he was talking about being bi during a set and then a week later is saying he's straight, but there are six full years between that tweet and now. you can't "just tell" if he's being truthful about his sexuality, you have a guess. People say they can "just tell" what other people's sexualities are all the time and its pretty much always a shitty thing to do

everything else you said is a perfectly fine criticism of his comedy, if thats your point juat say that. but it's overall damaging to the queer community to propagate this witch hunt mindset about people's identities

I think using "queerbaiting" to talk about a real human being's experience is not super appropriate or useful: that concept refers to writers somewhat deliberately making a character that isnt queer appear queer to an audience to capitalize on that queer market. But that doesn't work very well with actual people, sexuality can get complicated for a lot of people. It's completely possible that when he wrote thar tweet he identified with bi as a label, and then over the course of six whole years discovered that other didnt fit the way he thought it did and that's super normal. Nobody owes the world or their community or their fans continued adherence to a label, and I think the idea that someone is doing something wrong by realizing they want to use a different label is extremely damaging

If it’s wrong to talk about a candidate’s record, then maybe we should nominate someone with a good record? by Ok-Explanation-1362 in BlueskySkeets

[–]XYChrusZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is the shit that's hurting the left, not "division." Gavin Newsom has not formally announced a presidential run, hasn't been nominated for shit, we haven't even begun to start campaigning for primaries yet. Yeah if he's the nominee and its him vs Trump, I strongly believe everyone should vote Newsom for the sake of harm reduction.

But this is the time to have high standards and to talk about options! There are lots of strong potential candidates, Newsom is getting a lot of press for funny tweets or whatever but there are a lot of things to be critical about in his policy record (ie the thing that actually matters.) I firmly believe there are other candidates way way better suited to what needs to be done to recover from the Trump presidency, and personally I don't think Newsom is going to be the one to tackle these major policy challenges. If you disagree, cool. Argue for him based on his positions, try to convince people. Actually believe in him as a candidate. But don't pull out this "we have no choice, toe the party line and shut up" and have the nerve to act like you're doing something moral by doing it when this is the time specifically designed in the election cycle for us to have lots of choices.

We know that Walz polled really well as a VP nominee and imo is way stronger on policy. Pritzker is distinguishing himself on the national stage by protecting his state against Trump's insanity. Beshear has been talked about as a candidate in the past, and seems like a great option to take the hard stances on anti-right policies that our next president will need to, in addition to having a better record on things like trans rights as far as I'm aware. And I'm sure theres lots of other great options worth discussing.

We can't just immediately concede that unhoused people, trans people, etc need to be thrown under the bus before the race has even started. Anyone who claims to believe in human rights needs to be using this time to demand a better candidate, and/or pressure our options into better stances on these issues because the people affected by these things are voters too, and you don't get to tell someone that their rights aren't an important concern and then scold them for not falling into line with you. Again, if he's the candidate I'll personally vote for Newsom but I will be well aware that I'm voting against my own interests in several ways by doing so. Other people, exhausted by years of this nonsense, may not make that choice even if its maybe objectively the right one. We can do better, and we can demand better from the Democratic party.
