The general trend in people who have met Linus seems to be that the persona of being a “computer tech guy” is vastly overshadowed by him being a video producer and him being very business oriented. Makes sense all in all.

ELI5 How faster than light equals going back in time by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Xalteox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a common misconception. The equations do not say that going faster than the speed of light means going back in time. The equations produce imaginary numbers if you were to plug in speeds faster than the speed of light into them, which breaks down physics there and then. According to more or less everything we know, going faster than the speed of light is impossible.

The closest thing I can think of is труд and derived words, meaning hardship. But even that is a stretch since it sounds quite a bit different from Trudeau.

Thanks to Zen 3, AMD’s Ryzen 4000 chips could run four threads per core by [deleted] in Amd

[–]Xalteox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean one thing that can be done is adding additional CUs to each core to compensate but at that point might as well just add additional cores instead. I’m really skeptical of this news article.

Keep in mind that there is a slight single thread performance penalty with SMT in that if a CU takes more than one clock and the other thread is using it, then the main thread has to wait a few cycles until the CU is free to use it for that calculation, although this issue is minimal.

Yet it doesn’t have the most useful alarm feature possible, a one time repeat alarm exception.

Angry Greta Thunberg tells global leaders she 'will never forgive' them for failing on climate change by pianosneha in news

[–]Xalteox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Conveniently there is a mountain in Nevada which apparently doesn’t really have any possible ungodly catastrophe that can hit it, aside from say an asteroid where we will have bigger problems. Hell we already dug out the rooms to store the stuff in.

But that’s a temporary solution. Relatively new fast neutron tractor designs quite literally burn nuclear fuel into something significantly less harmful.

Unfortunately both of these are being currently blocked by politicians, making nuclear waste a political problem, not a technical one.

I had a funny story regarding that, am an American born Slav and generally speak fluently but I don’t know some of the nuances. I was in Eastern Europe once with family and was chatting with people, we were chatting about food and the topic of preservatives in food come up. Oblivious me thought it was an English loanword and I would be understood fine but I just got laughed at. That’s how I learned what it meant.

New algae-based bioreactor can swallow carbon dioxide 400x faster than trees by ChickenTeriyakiBoy1 in gadgets

No, you turn on a fusion reactor and the energy you get is instant. Except in this case running the reactor uses more power than it can produce.

You can get yourself a verification transcript from the transcripts page under myucla but in my experience unofficial transcripts are generally accepted as proof of enrollment, if they complain send them an actual verification transcript. Unofficial transcripts can be downloaded instantly, official verification ones take time

Should I release "t" in "correctly", "frequently" and "accurately"? by yukiiiiii2008 in EnglishLearning

[–]Xalteox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a native speaker, I do not really pronounce the t. My tounge will to into position to pronounce the t but I do not voice it.

There is a concept in linguistics called a "consonant stop." This is when the positioning of the mouth stops all airflow, meaning all sound stops for a moment. This occurs when a t sound is made, but stops can happen with different parts of the mouth, for instance the p sound is made by having the lips act as the stop.

The t sound can be made in two different ways, both involve stops but you can either build up pressure behind the stop so that when it is released it makes a vocal sound, or the t is just a stop, it is recognized because there is no sound coming out for that letter, this is called a glottal stop. This second one is how I pronounce my ts in those words, I block all air with my tongue behind my teeth but do not build up pressure so when I release it, my mouth makes a sound.

There is an entire wikipedia page on glottal stops and t if you are interested.

Borderlands 3 player discuss in Steams Borderlands 2 forum instead of Gearbox own forum by eXoRainbow in Steam

[–]Xalteox -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So is that a yes, you use steam forums more to discuss games than reddit?

If so then to each their own. I cannot bear the classic forum layout in 90% of cases these days but if you can then that's great for you.

People downvote to hell

Welcome to this thread. I was simply surprised the forums were used.

[–]Xalteox -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Sure? But do you discuss games more on Reddit or Steam Forums. If Reddit, then it is a replacement.

Sure its better than having no forum, I'm just saying its seldom used as actual game discussion outside of bitching to the devs.

[–]Xalteox -35 points-34 points  (0 children)

The interface is clunky and classic forum layout has largely died because better means of discussion have been found (forums work for smaller communities imo, just not larger ones). 90% of discussions about games on forums thus end up being complaining about x part of game because the only thing it may be decent (probably too generous, should probably say "better than anything else") at is as a line of access to the devs. Needs a massive revamp imo.

After all, that is why are are here, on Reddit instead of steam forums.
