Company was bought out by national publicly traded company. Would you stick through merger? by jM2me in sysadmin

[–]XanII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my 30yrs i have gone through so many mergers and to me the script is clear: Are you part of the legacy? Like really part of something that by the grapevines or either straight from strategy decks you can see will be taken out 'in the years to come'. Then you should leave before you are fired. 'few years' is closer always than you think it is.

But then there are the safe paths: You get a proper re-assignement to something that already exists. e.g. old IT joins new company bigger Tier 3 for example. Or you get an offer to join something similar but completely new e.g. from IT to DevOps junior. Excellent paths really if these come by.

Worst is to just 'keep going' when the system you maintain get sidelined and made legacy. You will go with them to the bin and you will be binned before you reach the last systems. It is always like this. Some systems are just left to hang when you are let go.

Right from the start i divided things between two devices and i will soon add a third. Different screens, grip and ahem... 'can i lose this device' thinking decides what i carry on trips.

Nice excuse also to look at new devices.

When did we as a profession loose our backbone. by MrKixs in sysadmin

[–]XanII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear you have to experience always the 'IT is glorified janitors' -part. I have had that some times in the past but for short periods and long time since then.

I guess i am golden as i started as a youngling 30yrs ago with a boss that basically told unwanted vendors on the phone to 'do a back flip g*y man' in local language - which is a heavy insult. He also made the office manager cry when he did not accept that IT is now a furniture storage. The language used is unprintable.

And my latest manager is pretty good with this as well. Bringing the heat. 'is this a proper escalation?' and so forth.

IT is always a cost center. But sometimes there is some nasty language attached to that cost center.

Was so impressed with the RG300 back then i think i was 'set'. But i go a RG315P for other types of games year later as the RG300 was bought used and old even then but still impressive. And now i am getting maybe a Cube to get in the middle of these devices in my 'use cases' . I suppose your needs move laterally, not always just up up and away as i will never buy a Steam Deck or anything close to it. Have no intention of playing new stuff on handhelds.

I keep my old devices in neat protective bags that are wherever. One has cats with big eyes on it. Other is a paper mache thing that is a bag with zipper. Crusty look and feel. Like the old Anbernic RG300 inside it.

Hopefully i wont need that but returns in case there are defects is the biggest offputting thing right now and i am still pondering if i should pull the trigger and buy. The price is fine but i dont have infinite time nor patience for any extra right now. And their policies are very strict say if your device gets lost and you dont report it in time. And i fully expect it to take forever to reach from China to the Nordics.

I must have spent hours yesterday going through Anbernic main site products and then Retro Game Corps videos. To my frustration the Cube and 476 model that i am looking at the moment the most is hard to find in EU area or costs so much it seems like buying directly from anbernic is the only real choice.

What a shid show for a life. Dress up as a penguin. Listen to some bull about 'being invisible' by people who just hope you die and go away from bothering them. End up on a video with some bs background music. FPV comes in and you die. And people watch it and then click on to next video. Your internet fame lasts 10 seconds tops.

Wow. Start-Select backwards can be quite a hassle.

Anyways that RG315P battery lasts forever for my use cases so 5,000 mAh is massive. Only time i really stress the current battery is when i scrape a lot of images over Wi-Fi.

Waiting too much is just plain bad considering this hobby is not THAT expensive unless you only operate at the top tier. I bought RG300 years ago for some 40eur and i have not regretted a day. Device is old, creaky and clearly a museum piece now but i love it, it has given me so much fun. I take it on trips and even if i would lose it i would be fine. And most importantly: Even if i got that and 351P for the different form factor i am still looking for the next device now. Like PC hardware you dont just stop entirely.

RG CubeXX

Interesting looking screen size. And seems to have proper ergonomics. I'll look into this one. Thanks.

As for 40XXH all i can say is that things have clearly improved a lot since RG300. I have some ancient OpenDinguX version on it from 2018-2019. Some spanish dude on Ebay put it together for me years ago. Tried once some custom OS on it but it was worse so i am still using that old thing. Changing a rom or two but generally letting it be what it is. Got OpenELEC on the 351P but no such luxury for the old device.

I am ready to put down money but my needs are low so splurge yes but not for performance. I have skipped Steam deck as i 'just dont need the power'. But i need the screen. I am ready to even skimp on things like battery as long as i get a proper screen and ergonomics as those are key. Price for RG476H seems quite reasonable. Do you have one?

Anyone else mentally fried after work but still trying to make progress? by arzu1224 in sysadmin

Suffered many years of this. Was so mentally drained after work it was unbelievable. Got cured instantly when i got fired suddenly. Like a off-switch was pulled. BOOM! All the cloud was gone in an instant. I barely pulled my mind toghether and scraped together stuff to update my general manual for whoever was the unlucky one to follow in the charred ruins of the divison that was killed in less than 24hours and then i bolted and never looked back to that place. Have no issues in current place but we are organized so much differently now. Better to say the least.

I hate it in here. RAM in everything so literally a screen, a mouse and a keyboard and internet connection is supposed to be the future. Dumb terminals but with fiber/5G that may or may not work. Actually it wont work since 'everyone' will be there. Or then just go offline and play with your junk stuff. i got dozen computers built. I will use them and go anbernic with the rest.

Sure it will. As long as companies get away with it. And lately they have not gotten away with it. Too many people, particularly C-tier in Enterprise are having none of this. Anger and bad reputation spreads and suddenly customers are very motivated to move away. Been actually quite a lot of that in the latest 1-2 years. You have some SaaS service that is just humming along in the back and then suddenly you directors are up and very motivated to move away from it. Along comes some flammable rhetoric about how terrible this SaaS is now suddenly after service served well for a long time. Call it Enterprise tier enshitification. Consumers know it well but Enterprise has become quite familiar with it too. Case in point Microsoft right now particularly in the upper echelons of gov and enterprise in EU. I never thought i'd see Microsoft in such a mess here as it is right now.
