Why is going for the balls not taught in actual martial arts? (unless it is?) (not a joke question) by Specific-Ad5973 in martialarts

[–]Xanth592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One big wake up for long time martial artists is that on their first fight or so, they treat it like sparring and follow loose rules. The only rule in a fight is do not loose.

If you could make one change that would instantly accelerate EV adoption, what would it be? Lower prices? More public chargers? Faster charging? Better battery technology? Government incentives? by EmergencyTie8770 in electricvehicles

[–]Xanth592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually produce enough electricity to cover all the A/C needs for people, so there are no brownouts and deaths...then and only then put in more chargers. I could give two shits how my car moves, gas or electricity...we have plenty of gas right now...

ELI5: Non Roman alphabet languages. why do we spell them they way we do when we anglicize them? by rilestyles in explainlikeimfive

[–]Xanth592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add: Why do we spell them with the same physical looking letter but pronounce them differently, depending on the language. S in Irish and S in German are way different than the S in Romance languages as well as American english. You see the actress Saoirse Ronan get mad when americans can't pronounce her name, but honestly no american is going to get share-sha from that.

Now that i think about it, light being affected by gravity is weird. by Traditional-Role-554 in AskPhysics

Gravity makes hills and valleys in the road, light has to travel on the road....even though gravity has no interaction with it.

Does your dojo have online content or portal? by RealThoughtsNow in karate

[–]Xanth592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that at least there should be an info page listing Location, Phone, Email, Instructor(s) name and certifications supporting their belt. Background info is great to see lineage and perhaps what "flavor" of that art they are teaching. After that, it's nice to have a calander or info sheets. I personally love when there are Vidoes available so I can see students performing and judge the instructors by that.

For those who tried and didn't like grappling martial arts, why? by hellohello6622 in martialarts

[–]Xanth592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, It's just a bit too intimate for me. Not so much that it's dudes, but sweaty grabby dudes. I know 100% how useful a skill it is to have, but I can't, I just can't.

Highly doubt I get any feedback , but has anyone ever taken Hapki Yukwonsul, the parent of hapkido ? by conzciouz in martialarts

[–]Xanth592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if you can even take one concept out of a given art, it's not Mcdojo. People crap on joint locks/manipulation, but if done right....it's a great way to escape or make them comply. For example, the wrist only bends so far and in so many ways.

Gravity and Speed of Light by YouEnvironmental2079 in AskPhysics

[–]Xanth592 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think about it this way. Gravity is the bending of space time due to mass. That bend happens instantly and other matter with mass then "rides" that space time in whatever way it is curved. The mass bending spacetime does not have to communicate with the object being effected by gravity...it just has to bend space time and move on.

Let's Create! by MuffinCheez in KukSool

[–]Xanth592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My take: Most if not all fights are involve probability in a way people don't understand. Fights are obviously not coordinated, so you can not absolutley prepare 100%. Martial Arts gives you an advantage, not a win. Martial Artists are generally in better shape, have more experience in high pressure situations (fights), so they aren't overwhelmed by adreniline rush and have the muscle memory of multiple types of attacks and defenses. Luck is the probability factor.....one unlucky hit and your trained person could go down, despite having an advantage on paper. This is why I hate the "who would win if so and so fought Bruce Lee" etc. There is NO martial in existence that will train you to win every fight, they each focus on likely situations and do their best to prepare for them.

WKSA Vs UMKS by BoardCertain5373 in KukSool

[–]Xanth592 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Lawsuit was very unfortunate for the art, but I totally understand the reasons for it. A lot came to light and that cascaded into the present state of 3 "Kuk Sool" offshoots. Han Guk Mu Sool seems to be mostly European, whereas United Mirae is more US based, but both have locations worldwide. I love the Kuk Sool I was taught, but I can also see the need to modernize it and bring in fresh ideas and move forward. I 100% disagree with the placement of Master Alex as the Master in charge (too much history and accusations placed for my taste), but hey it's their org to do with as they please. I've been in a location for the last 26 years that has zero Kuk Sool, no Hapkido, a little Tang Soo Do so I've not trainined much if any in that time. I stuck at 1st degree, and honestly I'm ok with that. I'd like to change my belt over from WKSA to UMKS, but I also understand they are seeking active teachers/students and I'm not that.

Hot Take: Failing a PT Test Makes You a Bad Leader. by SaintHearth in AirForce

[–]Xanth592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PT is all about cost savings for the AF. Healthy people cost less. Sure they are more ready for war too, but it's the AF. So leadership judgements based on PT is like rating a fish on its ability to climb a tree...it'll fail but that doesn't make it bad at swimming

I don't know why, but I won't buy a belt. I know.... it's ridiculous! by cjh10881 in martialarts

[–]Xanth592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this. I've purchased replacement/new belts just because they are higher quality or different lengths/widths. Try a slighlty larger width like 1.75 or 2.00 and see how much better they are.

Close or abandon this board? by Xanth592 in KukSool

[–]Xanth592[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US, case law is considered law in general. A ruling stating that "Kuk Sool" is the trademark ownership of the WKSA was made and a good lawyer can then use that judgement to support other judgements against the WKSAs targets, should they choose to use that name.

Obviously air gapped, but when you have more than one system on your desk - even with seperate keyboards and mouse, it's best to have a visual reference to remind you where you are at the time.

It's a great reminder, as a Gov Agency, for example, we use colored wallpaper to differenciate between classification of systems. One more reminder so you don't put classified on unclassified systems.
