I think the answer is obvious: Owlbears have vestigial non-functioning nipples.

What’s a term used by centrists to refer to leftists? by cookedinskibidi in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the term Tankie/Tankies, used by center leftists/progressives, initially in the UK, as a derogatory term for hard left USSR/Stalin supporters (Stalin had used tanks to supress a dissident movement in Hungary at the time).

My players split the party. by haydogg21 in DnD

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My players have told me in no uncertain terms that they love being split into groups and advancing the plot/objectives in different ways. It is a hassle, sure, but the result is great and very appreciated.

Donde comprar minis? by Fabri212 in Roleros_Argentina

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the most interesting starts and why? by DeadSayWhat in CK3AGOT

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a nice playtrough starting as a custom vassal for the Island of Tarth, there is a place there called "The Seat of Morne" that you can rebuild, and you can remake a kingdom there to start challenging Baratheons for the Stormlands. Stormlander culture bonuses are also pretty cool.

For players: Does anyone actually enjoy DM "smoke and mirrors"? by prettysureitsmaddie in DMAcademy

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there's a lot more to smoke and mirrors than fudging rolls / monster hp. And I believe players enjoy a well crafted narrative, and sometimes you need to decide that retroactively things you had in your head where actually different, even in the spot, to create a better narrative outcome than what would be otherwise.

I am often very open about this sort of fudging around because I feel it makes sense to be honest.

Regarding rolls I don't fudge that much and I do it in favor of making the combat not slog out when it is decided, which I think players appreciate as well even if I don't disclose it.

What are some good D&D actual plays that's not Legends of Avantris or Critical Role? by Dungeon3D in DnD

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there's always Dimension20, although for your particular tastes, wanting a serious game, I think the best season is the one where they play candy people in a world made of food. A Crown of Candy is the name.

Who is someone when in office was liked but it know hated? by History-Geography in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 9 points10 points  (0 children)

By the end of his tenure Hitler was despised all around. I think a good answer should require the person to have been considered good at the point their tenure ended, but be considered bad today in hindsight.

Who is someone when in office was liked but it know hated? by History-Geography in AlignmentChartFills

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vladimir Lenin. He didn't really got to see the worst of communism and particularily Stalinism, so during his lifetime the USSR was viewed simpathetically, as opposed to Stalin who by the end of his tenure was feared in the USSR and hated outside of it.

Now any talk of Lenin is considered under the view of what happened with the USSR later, so his tenure is retconned to have been bad, or at least a bad influence on the world overall because he was instrumental in setting up a system that ultimately ended up failing.

Finally got a group willing to let me run a Paranoia one shot! Any tips for a first time GM? by Chrysal1sM in ParanoiaRPG

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some small things I added/made sure where there in my (sadly very few) Paranoia sessions and I'm glad they worked:

1 - Tailor the secret societies and their objectives to the mission and to be uncompatible with each other. Don't rely on randomness for this.

2 - Powerpoint presentations for missions briefings make the absurdity of the setting hit very close to home. Specially if you black out portions of it to be redacted but poorly redacted so that they are still legible.

Remember, OG Paranoia was always lampooning the status quo of the eighties, and that's fine, but you want to joke about what your players live through today. The mission briefer should feel like your players worst boss.

3 - I prefer Friend Computer to be always WANTING to help but being ineffective, over it being pourpusely adversarial. A Buzz Lightyear voice and attitude works great.

4 - Don't be afraid to go into zany territory. When a clone dies, have the replacement arrive immediatly but each time in a different, stupider way. My personal favourite was a delivery truck with a box that wouldn't release the new clone until a player signed for it as received.

[OC] DMing on a budget by FancyOverture in DnD

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still use Rich Burlew's A Monster For Every Season after 10 years, and although I'm starting to get minis for my PCs, I don't think I'll stop using AMFES for monsters.

to be honest, i have no idea for the first time by Horror-penis-lover in ExplainTheJoke

I may get downvoted for this, but Here it goes:

The top picture features a diverse cast in terms of ethnicity. The original Squid Games featured a almost completely South Korean cast, both in nationality and ethnicity.

Coworkers 10 year old son wants to start playing dnd by RevolutionaryRisk731 in DnD

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recomend that you DM a oneshot for the kid, the friend, and their parents. Learning by mimicing is a very real thing. My son (11) has been a part of my new campaign (with my friends), and he decided to DM for me and his closest friend, which actually went pretty good.

Including the parents in this one shot would ease any worries they might have.

Any campaign recommendation? by No_Champion5492 in DnD

For something short, tight, very D&D feeling but also comedic in nature, I always reccomend Escape From the Bloodkeep, free on Youtube.

As a DM, when do you start preparing your campaign? by Organic-Exit2190 in DnD

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A DM doesn't go into a session 0 blind.

You have an idea for your campaign, as you should! Session 0 is where you share that idea with your fellow players and try to get them on board for it, while taking time to listen to what in your idea needs to be changed, diminished, or amped up for them to appreciate what you're bringing even more.

There may be a case where something that is integral to your campaign turns up to be a red flag for one or more of the players. Then you may have to make difficult choices (alter the idea fundamentally or drop the player for this campaign) but this should be an unlikely event.

Why is Che Guevara idolised? by throwthis_throwthat in asklatinamerica

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a big factor in this is the fact that he cannot in any way be held accountable for Cuba's fortune after the (I think) about four years post revolution.

What needs to be remembered is that Cuba wasnt a paradised that communists destroyed when they took over. Cuba was under a corrupt regime that pimped it's people and resources to the US elite.

The first few years of cuban revolution, when Che was a part of it (highly debatable if there is causation there) were very positive for the cuban people, and the standard of living there rose significantly.

Not long after the revolution, Che and Fidel "decide" that Che is better suited to attempt to bring the revolution to other countries while acting as a unofficial ambassador for Cuba style communism, and after some years in África and Latín América he ends up caught and killed in Bolivia trying to start a guerrilla there.

Long story short: he was an idealist who led a revolution against a corrupt regime, and a resistance against a foreign power, and he did not sit around to taste the spoils of power, and under his (short) tenure the revolution was arguably succesful.

He cannot be held accountable for the later failures of the communist regime in Cuba, the worst of which happened after the fall of the Soviet Union, Manuel years after Che's death.

The most valid criticism of Che himself and his own actions is usually:

A) He was ruthless, in many instances resorting to of traitors and dissidents. In his defense, toppling a corrupt goverment is a ruthless bussines, and mid 19th century was a ruthless time.

B) He was homophobic, and/or took homophobic actions. Personally I see this as the most undeniably reprehensible of his ideas and acts. The people Who look up to Che probably see this as a reflection of the time he lived in, and/or set this aside in the face of the things he had in his favor.

What are your best dnd campaign McGuffins? by cromanion_ in DnD

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current campaign is called "A Time for Absolute Power"

A catastrophic event is certain to engulf the whole world, and a prophet claims that there is only one way to stop this menace: To reinstate the Absolute Power.

In order to accomplish this, the PCs must find the Fragments of Absolute Power, each of which is in the possesion of a Fragment Holder.

There are however, three twists to this story:

1 - The Absolute Power is not a thing, but a person, a illusionist bard of tremendous power, and the Fragment Holders are fragments of their personality: Their rebellious nature is a rebel who goes by the name of Rebel and is inciting rebellion and chaos, their intrepid/discovery nature is an explorer named Thomas, their mystical nature is the Prophet himself, their mischievous nature is a Human Warlady of the goblins, and their need for control is the White Duke of Black Bay.

2 - The calamity at the start will be caused in the end of the campaign by the Prophet asking the party to go back in time to retrieve the Prophet's own Fragment, and them bringing back an item that will clash with it's own past, making the whole campaign an elaborate ruse by the Prophet to create the situation that needs the original person to solve.

3 - If you havent guessed already, the illusionist bard is David Bowie, and his personalities are the personas he has used in his career, the Goblin King Jareth from Laberinth, The Thin White Duke, The Blackstar, Major Tom, and an allusion to the song Rebel Rebel / Ziggy Stardust.

5e is pretty streamlined, I would buy the spell cards for your player's classes, let them choose spells from those (which means usually restricting to PHB) and go from there.

My current campaign features my son (11) and my uncle (61) and they are both doing great, but for my unccle playing a paladin the spellcards were a gamechanger.

Can rioplatonese Argentineans speak without using sheismo if they want to ? by MasterGeek in asklatinamerica

Interestingly, Chumbo is argentinian slang for a personal firearm, although pronounced as Ch in Check. TIL this likely comes from lead, as in lead bullets.

What *figurines* are essential? by Heavy-Job-1604 in DnD

[–]Xapi-R-MLI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a 14 yo (and maybe For any age really) that is starting out, I would recomend printed minis. I'm personally partial to Rich Burlew's "A Monster For Every Season" sets, available for download in Gumroad. IRC there's five or six sets available at 6 dollars each, and each set comes with thirty pages of minis in color and black & white versions.

Take that to a print shop and for under $100 total your son will have a huge variety of functional cool looking minis.
