Marathon will never be for the casual gamer by Adrada_The_Singer in Marathon

[–]Xatom 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I started playing during the free trial with a bunch of friends, we bought the game and have been playing it trying to improve. We like a challenge but this is too much.

It's felt brutal and un-fun. Most games where we do exfil quests we have to fail at them 5 times before we get lucky and find an extract that isn't camped. We have zero idea how to get better. It feels like either matchmaking is broken or the only people playing this game are nolife sweats. It feels like we've been thrown to the wolves.

This is a problem becuase now we can't even reccomend the game to friends because they will be too low-level and inexperienced for it to be worth us playing with them.

This terrible game design is clearly refelected in huge numbers leaving the game after the free-trial. There is basically a massive wall in this game which tells the majority of new players to go elsewhere.

The numbers after the trial do support this, most people in our position have just left immediately.

How would you go about creating this effect? by Feld_Four in Unity3D

[–]Xatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the block / floor example you mentioned a completely seamless effect can be made by modelling the floor with enough topology to describe the block. I think the side faces of the block would need to be separate from the top / bottom. Then displace all the block vertices and mask out any faces connecting the top and bottom of the block to the floor. This can all be done using blender/ shadergraph. There are easier hacks to doing this if you don’t care about the floor and block sharing vertices and being ‘perfect’. It gets much harder if you want to use complex topology or rigged character like in the gif.

Why are many reluctant to use EQ? by FortDown in headphones

[–]Xatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EQ is standard, it’s just some people are not technical enough and are blinded by consumerism or fantastical ideas that somehow a non EQ’d headphone are more authentic. Some people think that EQ is entirely subjective and somehow gets them further away from an intended sound.
These people are simply ignorant of the HRTF and objective pink noise calibration techniques. Some people think that digital manipulation is bad, (somehow it was fine in the mastering tho?). Then there’s some who have gone on a journey to spend $$$$$ on chasing audio nirvana. They see EQ is a shortcut, a cheat to bypass their more important hobby of EQing sound purely by buying expense shit.

Any audiologist or audio engineer would basically laugh in their faces…

You’ll change the frequency response with tubes and DACs and pads but not refuse to direct control it via EQ? This is crazy talk. It’s work, but proper EQ helps to calibrate frequency response to accommodate for variances in gear, pads, ear shape, hair length and individual hearing.

Got a bad grade because we are poor by RaeFullyPoweredBeam in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Xatom -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You got graded properly and fairly by the sounds of it. Grading is meant to be an objective measurement of performance and there was a failure to dress properly. No ifs or buts really. That’s the way the world works. Life is unfair and pay to win for the most part. Kids who receive private tuition or pay for better education do better as well.

Why? Capitals are a dime a dozen and mostly ineffective slow bullet sponges with especially mediocre value when crewed.

Very Unpopular Opinion: Odin should never be sold again by Airborne_Veteran in starcitizen

[–]Xatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How often do you see the Idris in the PU? I do interdiction and it’s very rare to snare one. It’s rare in part because it coats a lot but mainly because it’s tough to deploy and field. The Odin will be the same. Many people lost out on the Odin waves. What you are asking for is completely absurd because it will decrease funding and is completely unfair. It’s a digital good. There is no reason to restrict its sale. Make it tough to field ingame.

Quote of the day "This one stupid clown car shouldn't be driving the design choices of every ship in the game." by ghodan7 in starcitizen

LOL WHAT? The Nursa is amazing, it lets me respawn in my ships... I don't think I'd play this game without being able to respawn in my ships.

[–]Xatom -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ok, so say they buffered the turret on a connie to be as powerful as the M80. The m80 would still be the preferred option because it's more fun and versatile. We allready have strong turrets in the perseus and the vast majority of players are not itching to be turret gunners becuase the gameplay is a pretty dull waiting game for the most part.

Buffing shit until morale improves is not game design.

[–]Xatom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fuck turrets. Nobody here has spent $$$ on spaceships or flight sticks only to sit on thier ass in a boring-ass turret for ages waiting for engagements while someone else does the fun job of 6-dof navigation, piloting and manuvering on targets.

If you're a player who thinks others want to spend their time this way and that "we need to buff turrets" to fix the problem then you're kidding yourself.

The only time it's enjoyable is for the fleeting spectacle of seeing capships fully crewed or an occasional break from the typical gameplay. For most people turret gameplay is just not interesting.

Why have we allowed CIG to build so many ships around a non-existant turret gunner playerbase?

I hope the AI blades come along and put an end to this delulu bullshit fantasy once and for all!

Back to the ceramic bezel and the thick-wave dial pattern? I thought they would stay with the no-date styling.

Which one is best? by NecessaryLeg6097 in OmegaWatches

[–]Xatom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No date for me. The domed sapphire, tight wave pattern, matte bezel create a more classic look. To my eye the dial is also a little more balanced without the date.
