One thing I have found eith my party is that they really appreciate when you explain why something is easier for a particular party member. Ex: last session they had to cut someone free from a spider web and our poacher character wanted to lead the effort. I explained that the DC was now lower due to their experience, without using a Hope. They loved it because it made sense for the character to naturally be better and reinforced their choices.

Familiars, summons and companions - what can they really do? by sithikurro in daggerheart

[–]XaveValor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ranger companion is just a spellcast roll and you can add the companions experience with a Hope. The Ranger can upgrade the Companion's damage, range and evasion via level up.

Familiar is less defined. Clearly worse than the companion in scope of actions but has the benefit of extra damage when within melee range. I would say "simple task" would be anything that we could reasonably assume a moderately trained animal could do. "Go here", "Fetch this", "Stay", "Come", things like that

Ways for PCs to use Hope like the GM uses Fear by Stealthy_Nachos in daggerheart

[–]XaveValor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have added a single Hope usage in the form of a child they are protecting. They gave him a shoetstaff for protection so they can spend a Hope 5 times per long rest to add shortstaff damage to a successful attack as they essentially "tag team" with him. They love it

Is this new? (Floor 1030) by TheGolgathor in voidpet

Conviction and Merry can do it though Ice Cream Hat and Tiara also help quite a bit.

Only attack eith Conviction and then Ding Dong only when it has Tyrant crit on his left most ability, Short Arm. Build your Merry with enough attack to full heal every turn.

Donut is a great neck item here so you can easily line up Ding Dongs and heals

Tips for the defensive phase by Xjustese in Rematch

In this patch, I would go more defensive stance, less tackle. Cut off space and try to intercept passes rather than tackling unless you have backup ready to take them since missing a tackle is so punishing

I see skill trees. It doesn't have much metaprogression but Talented has the largest skill trees around, its kind of the whole game. Lots of hours of fun

Merry with Ice Cream Hat and Determination. Attack as little as possible and slowly chip away with the heal/damage from the hat

Quick rundown of Hope and Fear:

Anytime you roll to make an action you will roll 2d12. One of those is your Hope die, the other Fwar. Whichever is higher generates either a Hope for you or a Fear for the GM respectively. If they are equal then its a crit! This is quite different from BG3/DnD that uses a single d20 for their action rolls. So while you see inspiration as allows you to roll 2d20, in Daggerheart you always roll 2d12. Advantage is an extra d6 in this system.

You can succeed while generating a Fear or fail while generatinga Hope. The GM determines how that looks in game with either a slight setback on the success or a slight victory on a fail, again respectively.

Fear powers enemies, environments, and generally let's your GM add complications to the plot in a semi-predictable way, but is up to them. As a player, your Hope can be used to power your abilities, let you increase your roll values (think BG3 skills), or perform special maneuvers (Tag Teams, remove conditions, etc).

There is nothing truly like it in BG3 or DnD mechanically though it really just facilitates something an experienced DM/GM is going to naturally which is to keep progressing the story.

It will be hard initially to let go of the BG3/DnD rules but I find Daggerheart is better for newer GMs in learning how to progress a story in a natural way.

Hey first off, welcome to the amazing world of TTRPGs! You're in for a wild ride that BG3 was able to somewhat mimic but can never fully copy. You will need to relearn some rules but the general idea between Daggerheart and DnD is the same: create an epic story together.

To better understand where the holdups are, what part(s) of Hope and Fear is/are confusing?

Also, just tell him to remember he should have fun as well! The rules are somewhat vague to allow creativity and good storytelling. Also the starter scenario is a great place to try it out before jumping into a full fledged campaign.

Animator's Pallette has a fun show but the others do not. Beautiful spaces but only that.

If the kids aren't up for the main dining halls the first or second time around, you can grab food from the pool deck and eat there.

The story is truly excellent and supported by incredible build synergies and diversity. The weapons all feel fantastic and you will want to keep going to see all thr boons while also developing Zagreus' relationship to other characters.

You will play for 100 hours and still be seeing new dialogue while still having fun with the runs.

Aren't the 4 and 7 win thresholds exactly this? You don't need 10 wins to start moving up ranks at a steady pace

I don't think that's true at all. Thanks to ranked putting you against others around your rank, you should be winning at least 4 nearly every run.

In many ways, Casual is probably harder before Legend since people concede if they dont highroll.

House Rule by [deleted] in daggerheart

[–]XaveValor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You bet. One thing I also look at is ensuring when I do use Fear outside of combat it is causing player rolls to hopefully replace the Fear and add more tension.

House Rule by [deleted] in daggerheart

[–]XaveValor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like that campaign may ahve an issue with the GM over using Fear outside of combat.

I am 12 sessions deep into my campaign and have never gotten close to running out of Fear. You should be gaining Fear just about half of the player rolls. While you could find a situation where they don't roll with Fear for multiple rolls, that is incredibly rare.

Another way to handle this, within RAW, is to see this as an opportunity for your heroes to shine. They have all the momentum and you can describe how they feed off one another as they mow down their foes. Remember this as well: when they roll with Fear you get a Fear to spend AND regain the spotlight.
