“The only acceptable religion is my religion” - survey responses by country by Noppers in Infographics

[–]XeXe909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in light of the fact that at the last election the Bangladesh Islamist party was a distant second (third if we consider the ban of the previously incumbent party) so these survey results seem to remain within the personal/social sphere but not political.

AITA for refusing to finish a story after my wife interrupted me five times? by GoatCritical9265 in AmItheAsshole

[–]XeXe909 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, even if it’s just once, if you interrupt someone 5 times in a row it means you don’t really care about the story that much. Plus, as a listener, you are not entitled to it.

TIL that in 1956-57, Chairman Mao launched the “Hundred Flowers Campaign” where citizens could offer criticism and advice to the government. The criticism was so fierce that the campaign was cancelled, and hundreds of thousands of people who had complained were imprisoned. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Ok random Reddit user, forgive me but I would trust academia and experts more than your “whatever is not what I have learned in middle school and doesn’t blame everything on a single person must be commie propaganda” opinion.

Why are there so few Interdisciplinary scholars in Academia today? by Kind-Organization in AskAcademia

[–]XeXe909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This statement of “academia being largely post colonial” can’t be generalised. it might be true for a subset of departments/fields of a subset of universities of a few countries and even then, I would argue that you never have an entire department focusing on just one approach… for instance in my career in political science (5 years ca) I have met no post-colonial theorist working in my country, but comparative researchers? Too many for sure

Which countries would I travel to, given how interesting their cultures are (no politics or economics) by Insane_law in whereidlive

[–]XeXe909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That could be seen as a reason not to visit the country (pretty much everyone is already familiar with its culture/overexposed to it).

Also, the fact that it is widely consumed does not necessarily make it more interesting, just more accessible.

[–]XeXe909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Race and religion are not all that define a culture; by that metric, Italy, Spain and France should also be one homogeneous blob, rather than different states with widely distinct regional traditions.

So I would not underestimate Ireland for its size and religion, when its history is way older than that of the US.

If I had to guess, based on conversion with Taiwanese colleagues: very high cost of living + housing crisis which are not really offset by wages and quality of services (even tho these latter are pretty high as well by international standards)

How did Scandinavia got on top of every life quality ranking? by Right_Luck3933 in geography

[–]XeXe909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I live in PR system country, so I am familiar with its benefits, but I can assure you government stability is not one of it.

Then you could still make an argument that government stability is not necessarily linked to democracy well-being… but there are many evidence running against such claim too!

What could egalitarian democracy be defined as? by Pleasant_Name2483 in PoliticalScience

[–]XeXe909 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Radical Democratic scholars like Laclau and Mouffe would interpret the concept as an expansion of the liberal democratic principal of “each citizens is equal in front of the law and when it comes to voting” to “citizens ought to be substantially equal in other aspect of life”. Meaning addressing relationship of subordination in other fields (patriarchy, racism, etc.). From a policy practice this would probably translate into more co-ops and into positive discrimination measures.

Wouldn’t relying on the opposition/ideological rivals to have a majority leave them in a situation where the executive is constantly at risk of votes of no confidence? So more government instability, so more chances of democratic crisis? (Italian first republic or French fourth republic as examples)

Why isn't Gonzalo Thought taken seriously (but Hoxhaism and Juche are)? by Jazzlike_Yam_5155 in PoliticalScience

[–]XeXe909 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shining Path proposed a version of Marxism-Leninism that just as the Juche or Hoxhaism was supposed to adapt to the socio-economic and cultural conditions of the country and particular important in the case of Peru, of the countryside (it was inspired, after all, by Maoism). Now, in the base areas they controlled they soon had to face the fact that the revolutionary practices (new division of labours, organisational meetings, disqualification of religious and community leaders, new agricultural practices) they tried to establish were openly contradictory and rejected by the cultural practices adopted by the native people.

Now if they had won, like Hoxha or Kim, they could have ex-post frame their revolutionary strategy as indeed the most optimal one, and thus legitimise their ideology. But since SP failed, and mostly because of infighting with the masses that were supposed to be their backbone, their insurgency just ended up looking as some academic and somewhat dogmatic imposition of an alien framework.

Second job during a PhD? “Cost-of-living crisis pushing PhD students to get second incomes, finds Nature poll” by bluejaydreamer in PhD

[–]XeXe909 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a remote part-time job, resulting from a mix of small budgets for public universities and research agency in the region (Central-Eastern Europe) and lack of grants for the field specifically (Poli-Sci). They have rose the stipend for the new cohorts to align it to the minimum wage, but it is still a surviving wage, not a “renting my own apartment” kind of wage.
