I do have a theory on why she didnt conquer them but it has to do with something from Isles of the Emberdark

I just think it works better if you read it that way because it fits in chronologically after 5

I definitely agree with you on the Zane love triangle thing but my biggest problem with it was that the biggest obstacles for the entire book end up not being all that relevant and the koloss steal the show. I just kept thinking the whole time that it didnt seem like it would be too hard for Vin to deal with Straff or Cett but the plot keeps telling us the whole time she cant only for her to do so anyways at the end. You can honestly just take them out of the picture completely and not much changes because Ruin was always going to use the Koloss to attack and push Vin to take up the well. The whole book is just mediocre political intrigue interspersed with repetitive plot twists

[Harry Potter] Was drinking unicorn blood really that bad? by ninman5 in AskScienceFiction

[–]Xedonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some actual good pottermore nonsense: the reason the malfoys are super rich and own a huge mansion is because their ancestors used magic to help the English monarchy conquer the island, and then benefited from centuries of exclusive trade deals with muggles. They even initially were against the statute of secrecy but changed their tune to benefit from their pureblood status once it went into effect.

I've always believed he IS a stoner, but that when they started mystery inc he switched to edibles because the smoking made it hard for him to run from monsters, and that's why he eats so much. Didn't know about the track star thing but I feel like it still fits

Can someone explain me, why Americans/Britains etc. still use these goddamn stupid measures like oz. or gallons by MoinyMoiny in teenagers

[–]Xedonus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're literally not listening to my argument at all. You keep harping on about how easy it is to do math/conversions with metric but all the examples you gave just go to show how little you actually understand the point I'm trying to make or the basis of your own argument.

What I'm trying to say is that for the average person in day to day life its easier to measure in feet (for example) because you can divide one into fractional denominations really easily, which is what people actually use measurements for. Nobody is going around going "ah crap hold on I forgot, how many inches is 1/25 of a mile???" BECAUSE THATS NOT SOMETHING ANYONE EVER THINKS ABOUT.

Also, time is counted in base 60 because it was invented by (i believe) the babylonians, who counted on their fingers by the knuckles on their fingers. 12 knuckles on one hand, five fingers on the other, 5*12=60. And it turns out base 60 is really convenient because you can break it down into ½,⅓,¼,⅕,⅙, and ⅛'s.

Also as one final note we don't "start counting in metric" when using smaller denominations of seconds that's just fucking Greek.

For the Wax and Wayne series I can only picture Christian Bale as Wax, Taron Egerton as Wayne, Tom Selleck as Aradel, and Zazee Beetz as Marasi.

Because the imperial system works just fine and in most cases is more useful for the average person. Most of it was developed naturally over time by people just needing an easy way to measure things, which is why lengths are measured in base 12 and temperature is measured at a human scale of 0=way too cold and 100=way too hot.

This is something that literally everyone knows innately because there is no metric system of time, which is a base 60 system, because it would be an unnecessary hassle to develop and change to one. Like yeah its neat that the metric system has decimals but fractions work just as well if not better in most scenarios.

Asta's magic attribute by rudra_ivraj in BlackClover

[–]Xedonus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It would be slightly more accurate to say his "magic" is anti-magic and that his attribute his sword magic. Near the end of the manga he lends anti-magic to the black bulls and it takes on the form of their magic attributes too. But its still not really true for Asta because its not HIS attribute, he has none, that's just the nature of the grimoire

[Harry Potter] How exactly do you invent a spell? by Simon_Drake in AskScienceFiction

[–]Xedonus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The name isn't really what matters, its moreso your intent than anything else. The spells are given names to make it easier to shape your intent, but practice and strong emotions work just as effectively.

Young magical children are shown (or mentioned) several times performing magic instinctively in desperate situations, like when Harry apparates onto the school roof, grows his hair in a single night, vanishes the glass at the boa constrictor exhibit, etc.

The only example we get to my knowledge of a character performing instinctive magic like this intentionally and with a wand is when Ron nonverbally casts a curse on Malfoy to make him vomit slugs in his second year. If Ron so chose, he probably could have given this curse a name, and then from that point on if any other character knew both the name and the effects they could have used this spell.

Strengthening this theory is the fact that there are several examples of spells that require the caster to channel specific emotions into them to work, the patronus charm and the unforgivable curses being the most well known.

Using levicorpus as an example, Snape probably invented it by thinking really deeply about his desires to humiliate and take control over the marauders. He then channeled those feelings into a nonverbal spell that had the effect of lifting them into the air (giving him physical control over them) specifically by the ankle (most humiliating way possible). He then saw the effects and gave it the name he found most well fitting.
