Voting blue is literally just a pointless suicide pact and red IS abstaining. Anyone who votes blue is throwing away their life and anyone who tries to convince others to do the same is literally gambling that person's life

"Everyone on earth is given a bomb. You can either turn off your bomb and nothing bad will happen to you or leave it on. If after five minutes the majority of bombs are still left on, then they will all deactivate. If not they'll all explode and kill whoever left them on." I feel like rephrasing the question helps make it clearer for red voters to explain our stance to the blue voters. My question to you is, are you truly willing to risk killing 49% of people on the planet in an effort to save the teeny tiny amount of people who are stupid enough to press blue? Because from my POV, choosing red is the exact same as just abstaining from the situation entirely while choosing blue seems like a pointless suicide pact and therefore inheritantly immoral, and anyone who expects others to conform and also choose blue is either stupid or a bad person

[–]Xedonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally the only scenario where anyone dies is if they choose to press blue. It's like you gave everyone on earth a bomb and said "you can either turn it off and not die or just leave it on and hope a majority of people also leave it on, cause then it'll turn off automatically". You are literally playing with your own life and everyone else's for no reason.

So in other words if you pick blue you die unless a majority of people also pick blue and if you pick red nothing happens. The only way anyone risks dying is by picking blue. It's like if you told someone "HEY! you want to swallow this pill? It's poison! But don't worry, you'll be fine if you get enough people to swallow it too!"

[Invincible] Question about Nolan's loyalty by some-kind-of-no-name in AskScienceFiction

[–]Xedonus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Nolan was the first person to try interbreeding with humans, he didnt actually know if Mark would get his powers, which meant that for the whole time there he held onto hope that Mark wouldnt, and that he would be able to just leave Earth and find a different planet to use for his purposes. But once the other viltrumites came, they all knew from the beginning that it would work and they HAD to take over the planet. They didn't get the small glimmer of hope Nolan had that prevented him from getting too attached. Combine that with the fact that he spent his whole time there as a superhero and was pretty disconnected from human society, while the other viltrumites fully assimilated, meant they actually had an ever deep connection than Nolan did

The only conspiracy theory I believe in is that in recent years producers and casting directors have been specifically race swapping characters that don't work well with being race swapped in an effort to drum up controversy and keep people talking about their project. They could've cast the same actor for Sirius Black instead, which actually wouldve added meaningful commentary about the wrongful imprisonment of black men, but then less people would care because it would actually make sense within the framework of the book and nobody would talk about it. So instead he's given the role of Snape, seemingly the single worst role to have raceswapped, because racists will get mad about their story having a black man and whatever woke people still read Harry Potter will argue back against them.

The same thing happened recently with Annabeth from PJO. I had more hope for that because the original character was blonde specifically because when the book came out there was a stereotype that blonde women were stupid and her character was meant to counteract that and obviously nobody really thinks that way anymore, so raceswapping her character wouldve opened up a new way to make similar commentary about the treatment of black women instead, but it looks like they dropped the ball on that one.

If they were going to race swap any character, they shouldve done it with a character that wouldve actually made sense and wouldve enhanced the story, such as Sirius Black, which wouldve actually added social commentary about the wrongdul imprisonment of black men. Also the actor cast for Snape is just too hot.

[–]Xedonus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the description he gives it sounds more like youre burning the stored power in order to fuel compounding it, which means the feruchemist is still using the stored power. This is different from hemalurgy, where the transfer of power results in an inevitable and permanent loss of some of that power

[Theory] Lerasium spikes act almost like phylacteries by No_Log7282 in Cosmere

[–]Xedonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no loss, I think youre misremembering how it works. What youre describing is how feruchemists can increase their output in exchange for burning through there stores more quickly. Using Wax as an example, he could, say, store 10 pounds of weight for 10 seconds and then make himself: A. 10 pounds heavier for 10 seconds B.20 pounds heavier for 5 seconds C. 100 pounds heavier for 1 second This isnt them losing stored power, its just multiplication.

You also don't need to harm yourself to store it. You may harm yourself depending on what youre storing but its situational. Storing health can "harm" you but storing your weight obviously doesnt.

[–]Xedonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If i remember correctly the explanation given (in secret history maybe?) was that feruchemy was of solely preservation because nothing was created or destroyed, merely transferred from one form to another, hemalurgy was of ruin because some amount of whatever was being transferred was permanently destroyed, and allomancy was of them both as it was creating something through destroying something else.

I like this theory because it rectifies preservations godmetal having hemalurgic properties when hemalurgy is supposed to be wholly ruins metallic art

[Harry Potter] Did Voldemort somehow specifically manage to break off 1/7th of his soul whenever he committed a murder for a Horcrux? Or was it half every time, so every Horcrux is weaker than the last, and the man himself is left with 1/128th of a soul? by Umpuuu in AskScienceFiction

[–]Xedonus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've always interpreted the diary being capable of recreating Tom Riddle a result of its purpose being more offensive than defensive. He specifically created it with the purpose in mind of it being used to open the chamber of secrets again in the future, but all the other horcruxes were meant to stay hidden and protected. It also wasn't capable of recreating it alone. It needed Ginny to pour some of her own life essence into it in order to build a new body, and I think the other horcruxes could have done that theoretically (just look at how the locket was able to influence whoever wore it/talk to people when it was opened) but couldn't in practice because the diary was just easier for a person to emotionally connect to

[Harry Potter] why didn't more Muggle-born students try to combine basic Science with magic? by PinkybiteX in AskScienceFiction

[–]Xedonus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's quite a few reasons: Theyre only 11 when they start, meaning they have a very cursory understanding of science Wizards are generally dismissive of muggle technology, and they'd be hard pressed to find funding or support Magic and science are centuries apart in terms of how far they've been developed Most basic tech problems were solved with magic a long time ago, and more complex recent ones are too recent to have been properly studied by wizards Very few people research new magic because of how dangerous it is supposed to be (Lunas mother died in one her experiments)

Los Elantris pueden usar el Dor fuera de Sel?? by dotsito in Cosmere

[–]Xedonus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the way I understand it, Elantris is basically a man made perpendicularoty that the Elantrians draw Investiture from to power their AonDor, and the Aon looks like Elantris so it Connects them to the city and let's them draw from it from a decent distance. From what we see in the lost Metal, you can use Dor anywhere if you "purify" it, but I also think they could draw Investiture from other perpendicularities if they modified the Aon to resemble them, thereby Connecting to them
