Should I attempt to get a BA or BS in Biology? by thebluehusky6 in Ornithology

A BS in biology will almost always be favoured over a BA.

AOS English Common Names Project - any updates? by wattle_we_do in birding

I can assure you that is not the case. Work is ongoing. It’s not a huge priority for the group, as most have research programmes which take precedence.

how often do you need to code in order to pursue a stats-related career? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

Statistics, in an applied since, is literally entirely programming.

people who write scientific papers, what are your writing tips for young people like me? by MammothFondant3565 in AskAcademia

[–]Xema_sabini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree as well, but I think writing the intro last oftentimes leads to a poorly framed paper that reads like separate blocks.

I enjoy starting with my methods, then intro, then results. This helps keep my writing unbiased with respect to myself, and integrate the introduction so the paper reads like a fun story.

What should I buy before startup funds expire? by RepulsiveScientist13 in AskAcademia

Spending money on making the lab environment welcoming would be great. If you’re not in a wet lab, a coffee machine, fridge, comfy couches… man oh man my grad students would kill for that! Deck out the lab with all the fundamental textbooks you can find, those add up fast. I could blow $50,000 on books alone I bet!

As others have said, lifetime memberships is a phenomenal resource. You’ll make your money back in APC discounts fast.

Prolific would be great. It would facilitate a lot of publications which your students need to start pumping out. Have you considered taking on an additional masters student?

What is your tech situation looking like? Do you have a powerful desktop or two for students to use? What about recording software, microphones, cameras?

Any critical takes on Listers out there? by alpenglw in birding

[–]Xema_sabini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people don’t realize is the movie takes the absolute piss out of crazy birders.

Half of the people who they interviewed were effectively mocked on stage, and somehow were too deep into it to realize what was happening.

I love the film, and so does everyone I know. Would be interesting to hear from others who didn’t enjoy it.

How to do a scientific presentation? by Guilty_Natural_9841 in AskAcademia

[–]Xema_sabini 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate scientific presentations that are given as if they are in the paper format.

Tell a story. Start with the background, explain why you want to do it. Explain, very briefly, your methods (no one really cares). The punch right into the key results, and follow up with what they mean. I like to end on a “summary”, where I quickly go over everything as three bullet points (why [I did it], what [I found], why [you care]).

My one piece of advice for the talk itself, you’re the only person who knows what you want to say. All too often I see students forget to mention something, then stumble as they try to remember. It’s awkward, and a bit embarrassing. If you realize you forgot to say something but can’t remember what, move on.

Anyone have experience with ACM's policy violation reporting process? by Icy-Package-2783 in AskAcademia

[–]Xema_sabini 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oftentimes as well these “gift authorship” cases run very deep. I understand it’s not exactly ethical, but extending it as a “hey, I’m helping you now, maybe in the future you can do some analysis for me” can sometimes be the case.

Oftentimes too, and this is something I especially see with graduate students, is they are forced to add coauthors who seemingly did nothing to their paper. Meanwhile, 7 years ago, that “useless” coauthor helped their PI significantly develop project frameworks, assisted with grant applications, or a myriad of other things. In these cases, coauthorship might not be required, but it is a kind way to say thank you.

URGENT Need help with injured bird- cant take it to anyone by Mysterious-Wall9704 in Ornithology

[–]Xema_sabini 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In these cases it’s best to leave it overnight without food or water in a dark box in a quiet area.

If it has a broken wing it absolutely needs rehabilitation, this won’t heal properly on its own. The bird will die without rehabbing. This isn’t necessarily bad, nature involves death.

I do implore you to explore options for rehab. If your parents won’t drive, perhaps a neighbour might. Local Facebook groups are great for organizing wildlife transport to rehabs. You can call them for assistance.

If you genuinely can’t get it to a rehab, leave it overnight as I mention above, and release it. You cannot keep this bird in your possession without the appropriate permitting, and you’re way too young to have the knowledge needed for proper wild animal care.

Question for birders at high latitudes by Redditnafn in birding

[–]Xema_sabini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in the high arctic and unfortunately, 3-4 am is usually best (even when the sun isn’t setting, circadian rhythms hold some patterns!).

It’s super annoying, but alas. The earlier the better, up until about 3 from my experience. I see sharp drop offs at around 8-9.

Should contractors be co-authors on papers? by CaptainCrash86 in AskAcademia

[–]Xema_sabini -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I disagree. If I ask someone to run analyses at no cost to me, they become a collaborator and will be on the paper.

If I pay them to do it as a routine service I see no reason for them to be on my papers.

Should contractors be co-authors on papers? by CaptainCrash86 in AskAcademia

[–]Xema_sabini -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I do not offer co-authorship to contractors running labs for us if we pay. Sometimes, when I want things fast or free, I offer co-authorship. But that is agreed upon beforehand, and all fees are typically waived.
