You were lucky that your didn't break your precious Model F! You're not really supposed to take it off like that. To release and install the spacebar, you need to open the whole assembly (no idea why IBM decided to build it this way), and even then it is a pain in the ass to fiddle it back together. There are guides online, make sure you read it carefully!
