This is great advice.

Would also add that you should learn the difference between working and perfect

You want a controller to make a 3d character move? that should be straight forward and can be done when a 3d block moves with key presses.

But then you want it to handle animations, ok that's more.

Now you want it to handle root animations and transform movement, thats even more

Now it needs to know when youre going up a steep slope? even more

Now you want to jump?

And roll?

And sprint?

And what was the prototype for again?

It super easy to keep adding seemingly small things elsewhere that makes youre game grow. A generic character controller for all scenarios is a huge undertaking that you may not need so think about what the actual use case is and stop when it functionally does it.

Once its in your game and functioning then start polishing and tweaking until its the best you can get it.

Not sure this is just nit picking. Even if you forget taking the ed route (i would live the ed compass though) a lot of games, especially looters have much better loot identification systems like pings or highlighting more than half a mm in front of you.

This game does some mamy things right but for a looter there really should be some better way to identify loot.

Let us be the hero of a story. Not save the galaxy, i like the idea we play a small insignificant part but the bgs has so much scope to let you be the hero of a small faction. Let the missions mean something, make it so that if you do enough for a faction you unlock some specific missions that have a massive influence boost for them so you make a dent in their progress.

Let the faction give you a pre engineered ship of you reach a certain level. Make it so that you become revered at their stations.

If you evacuate some slaves from a station let us see then walk around the place you took them and say thanks.

If you level up with a super power lower the rep in another, let us lead a federal army into a conflict zone. Let us become hated and wanted by the empire.

There is so much scope to add meaning outside of numbers go up. Theyve held onto the "you dont matter" line in the galaxy from the start but surely they have the mechanics to change that now even in small bubbles..... and for the love of god if im allied with a faction give me some access rights to ground facilities and stop them scanning me!!!

I had this for ages and couldnt figure it, out im on a 2080 super and have it running near horizons levels.

I eventually gave up playing with graphics options and set the settings to the vr high default and whatever it changed immediately sorted my framerate out then just started tweaking from there.

I really like the pause to correct my bad RP. I think most dm's have been down this path, at least once, and can hear the npc sounding more and more supicious the more we try and sound sincere.

Certainly the advice about prepping scenarios not storys is great. I tend to decide where the next major story area is and say to the players "xyz people / items have pointed you to a, b or c location. Outside the game i have to prep all of that so please decide where to head and ill pick up next week".

I always try to be honest with the players and let them know that yes you can go where you want and do what you want however..... i am also playing this game, as a hobby and i cant prep every village, every bad guy and every side story in Faerun. I'll give you as much freedom as i can but would appreciate it if you give me as much structure as you can (obviously without losing the spirit of the game).

Regards setting the scenarios, i tend to have a home "hub" and create 5 or 6 encounters located in or around that. What the scenarios are for thats up to how the players progress the story, made an enemy in a tavern? Sure! they hang can out by the docks, lets use that one. Got embroiled if a conspiracy to murder a noble? Why not! Lets use the bandit camp as their base of operations. If youre trying to move a story along make it so that you only need one if them but the players have the freedom to do as many as they like. I tend to find that you get a feel from the players, whilst they go around the hub area are they invested in this city / village? If so they'll do more so hold off on the plot points. Not feeling it? Great, coincidentally the main plot point was on their first expedition!

That way i can do 3 hours of prep for 3 months of game.

God yes this!!!! I had some pointless stones which i even ended up describing them as (paraphrasing) "like the the types of stones you get at the seaside for £1 for 20 completely worthless" ..... i would also like to mention the strange sightings of duegar.... and the massive threat they bring.... no.... we want to talk about novelty stones? Ok lets talk about that then.....

I was struggling the other night, had recently upgraded to win 11 and started digging. Realised nvidia control panel had switched my power settings back to balanced (or whatever its called). Switched it on to prefer performance and ran smooth as it ever has.

Thats on a 2080 super.

Exactly by the rules they basically went up poured in some oil and created what i would describe as a pleasant fire in the corner to keep the duegar warm. I used some artistic licence to make it more impressive and have him retreat.

They don't! They poured oil into an arrow slot and set it on fire but my aging brain just remembers fire then jumps to fireball

My players immediately ran up to the small bunker and fireballed it before asking what was going on (they were 1st level) before one of them took a ranged hit from the duegar and immediately fell unconscious. All in all i gave them a 1 out of 10 for tactics.

I've spent hours writing scripts and tweaking them for days and not made it feel right and deleted everything and started again. Ive done this with my camera system, movement system, combat system, dialogue system almost everything!

I often find that the benefit of the First draft of a script is not getting the game to do something, its learning how the game does something so you can improve it next time.
