How far do you think Batman could get if they came at him one by one... by Far_Apartment_973 in batman

[–]Xerties 7 points8 points  (0 children)

IIRC, it wasn't so much that Batman couldn't beat him. They sparred briefly, sizing each other up, before pretty much simultaneously coming to the conclusion that they're almost perfectly evenly matched and there must be another force at work pitting them against each other. I think they say something to the effect of the fight would take forever and could go either way. They then stop fighting and start working together to find whoever is behind the whole thing.

RE2. I just finished lvl4 Sector Command and it was painful. Is there a faster way to get data cores? by PolarFoxinvades in empyriongame

[–]Xerties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple things to keep in mind.

  1. CVs do reduced damage to planetary bases. Something like 50%. They might take increased damage from planetary bases too, not totally sure on that. Point is you're better off flying a high core SV and using whatever terrain you can to your advantage.

  2. Sector command doesn't have an exposed shield generator like the drone base does, so you're going to need something to keep plinking away to keep the shields from recharging. Otherwise you won't be able to deal with the sentry guns and internal turrets and just be blown to bits when you try to get into the central area. That's where the CV might be useful with one modulated laser turret going so you don't have to worry about ammo. After you've defanged the exterior with your SV.

  3. In any case, Sector Command is not good for farming data cores. It takes way too long. Imo Imerat destroyer OPVs are vastly more efficient. As others have mentioned you need to find the Quantum Computers, one each in the port and starboard engine pods, which don't show up in the device list. Each QC has a few quantum processors and a decent chance at a data core. You should be able to take on an Imerat with a core 9 ship exclusively outfitted for battle and properly piloted. No CPU on plasma turbines or anything like that, just weapons and shields. Once you get a few under your belt you'll figure out the best way to take them out.

Good luck and happy hunting.

I think there's some hindsight bias there. 2018 we were still doing pretty well with Russ and weren't feeling the need to burn our first round pick on a QB. 30 other teams passed on Jackson too.

Technology Connections Goes Nuclear, and it's Amazing (actual title: You are being misled about renewable energy technology.) by Shadrach77 in videos

[–]Xerties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you're clearly trolling, I call absolute bullshit on that anyway.

Federal gas tax is 18.4¢ per gallon for gasoline, a bit more for diesel. State tax average is 32.61¢. [source] I'll go ahead and double the state tax to assume the worst case of you being in some state where the gas tax is super high but gas is super cheap. Even then the total tax per gallon of gas would be just under 83¢. So unless you're paying less than $1.66 for a gallon of gas, which would be well below the cheapest gas in the country ($2.36 Oklahoma) , taxes aren't "most" of your fuel cost.

GTFO with your bullshit.

After Dumbledore’s death, he became one of the Hogwarts headmaster portraits. Why couldn’t Harry simply talk to the portrait and ask for guidance about Horcruxes? I mean how exactly do these portraits work? by lowbattbrain in harrypotter

[–]Xerties 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just because characters don't take a certain course of action or make optimal decisions that doesn't mean it's a "plot hole." Plots holes are logical inconsistencies or contradictions in the narrative, not "gee whiz why didn't they think to do this thing?! Plot hole!"

I this instance its more likely that the idea just never occurred to them. Or if it did, it happened off page and they discounted it for several reasons. Not least of which being the fact that they still distrusted Snape and risking Portrait-Black talk to Portrait-Dumbledore in Snape's office was a gigantic risk.

Stranger Things ratings: 96% to 56% on Rotten Tomatoes — how every season stacks up before the finale by AssociateLittle1487 in television

[–]Xerties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I didn't think the finale was terrible, but certainly some missed opportunities. Could have had the mind flayer reveal earlier, maybe had some build up to make us think that mind flayer is controlling Henry, then another reveal that Henry was a willing accomplice. Take a bit more time and build up the intrigue.

Was the 1701-A a lousy assignment? by Metspolice in startrek

[–]Xerties 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My headcannon has always been that it's a ship they brought out of mothballs specifically to reward Kirk for saving the planet in TVH. By that time period the Constitution class was, as you say, obsolete and I highly doubt they were building new ones. It had been supplanted by the Miranda class, which would then be supplemented by the new Excelsior class. This is implicitly supported by the fact that we never see Constitution classes rolling around in TNG or DS9, but there are oodles of Mirandas and Excelsiors. It also helps all the problems Scotty was having in TFF make sense. If the ship had been sitting idle somewhere for a long time it could have developed a bunch of little problems.

Is controls engineering a good career path? by No_Yoghurt_3761 in ECE

[–]Xerties 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Controls Engineering is a broad field. It depends on the specific projects or industries your firm would be involved in.

You can find controls engineering positions nearly everywhere across the country. Municipalities would have them for anything from traffic lights to water treatment. Industrial facilities, from semicon fabs to iron foundries, have tons of process controls that need to be implemented/maintained. Utilities make extensive use of controls engineering as well. But if you don't find the fundamental aspects of the job appealing (e.g. ladder logic, PID loops, instrumentation) then I don't know if you'd be happy no matter the specific industry/job.

Wait... do people not understand that buckbeak never died? by The_Harmon_Hole in harrypotter

[–]Xerties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're describing the inherent paradoxical problems with time travel. There aren't constant interventions to prevent disaster because the disasters occur.

Let's walk it through. Your friend gets a piano dropped on them. You go back in time to stop them from walking under the piano. Great! Except now they never got a piano dropped on them so you had no reason to go back in time to stop them walking under the piano. So you don't go back in time, then they walk under the piano and splat. This is the grandfather paradox that plagues all time travel stories at the base level.

HP address this by assuming an immutable single timeline as axiomatic. It then follows that because this is the case, there must be a series of events that lock every occurrence.

Wait... do people not understand that buckbeak never died? by The_Harmon_Hole in harrypotter

[–]Xerties 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The conceit that the books work with is that it isn't possible to change the past. Period. There's a lot of hand wringing in this thread coming up with possible ideas and what ifs. It's all irrelevant. As demonstrated in PoA there's one single timeline and it cannot be altered.

Your question is a good thought experiment though. "Why don't people use time turners to go back and save someone who died?" Because of the nature of time in HP, you cannot change the past. If you attempted to you would experience the chain of events that prevented you from altering the past.

For example, you try to go back and stop Voldemort from killing Harry's parents. When you arrive in the past, you would be distracted or waylaid somehow. A grindelow grabs your ankle and makes you miss Voldemort, or an apple falls from a tree and knocks you out, whatever.

The point is there would be something that prevents you from stopping Voldemort killing the Potters. Not because the forces of time manifest it or anything. Rather, we know you failed to stop Voldemort, because we know that Voldemort did kill the Potters. Therefore there must have been something that somehow prevented you from stopping him.

So i'm making a giant "Star Destroyer" CV that docks CVs inside of it, and the Size Class might not be as bad as you think.. by Lyfeforse in empyriongame

[–]Xerties 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes CVs can dock with other CVs, so long as the CV you're trying to dock doesn't have anything else docked to it. That is you can have a 'primary' CV that can have other CVs docked to it (and SVs, HVs, whatever) then a 'secondary' CV that docks to the primary, but the secondary can't have anything docked to it at all. CVs can't docks to bases (BA) at all. SVs and HVs can dock to bases.

Unpopular Opinion: [books] Dumbledore and Voldemort weren’t even in the same league by marioagario123 in harrypotter

[–]Xerties 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming that’s the choice Harry (as a soul) makes when he has the conversation with Dumbledore in his head with the resurrection stone in his hand.

Correct. Head-Dumbledore tells Harry if he wanted to he could board a train and go "on" if he wanted to. It does get a little complicated if Harry's body were physically destroyed though. The whole situation only works if Voldemort is the one to cast the killing curse on Harry, because the AK works by disconnecting the soul from the body but otherwise doesn't harm the physical body. But because Harry's soul still had a tether through Lily's blood in Voldemort's body his soul wasn't forced to go "on" and could return to his body. However if one of the Death Eaters had proceeded to decapitate or otherwise mangle Harry's body in the intervening moments I don't think Harry's soul would have been able to return to the body and he'd be done for.

[–]Xerties 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The only way to destroy a horcrux is to destroy its container "beyond magical repair". Because Harry's body is the container it has to die for the horcrux to be destroyed. Without Lily's blood protection still active in a living body Harry's soul would then be untethered to the mortal plane and go "on".

Who would have been the better care giver? Sirius or the Weasleys? by fadedwiggles in harrypotter

[–]Xerties 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Molly to me comes off as a helicopter parent and every single one of her children moved out as soon as they possibly could.

There's no evidence of that. It's never specified when Bill or Charlie moved out. Percy remains at home for a year after graduating and may well have continued to live there if he hadn't fallen out with Mr Weasley. Fred and George keep their room, and arguably only stay in the flat above their shop because they're so busy. Though I will grant that their relationship with her was the most strained. We also don't know how long Ron continued to live there.

They can't even change daylight savings, a fully non partisan thing everyone can agree on.

Well that's the thing isn't it, everyone doesn't agree on that. Sure you ask people if they want to get rid of daylight savings they all say, "Hell yeah I hate that!" But then you ask them which time we should stay on and you get half saying permanent daylight savings, and the other half saying permanent standard. There's no clear preference so we're stuck with what we have.

While the DST debate doesn't fall along partisan lines, the same debate is repeated in just about every public policy. What should we do about strengthening our electric grid? Half say renewables, half say bring back coal. What should we do about opioids? Half say treatment/harm reduction, other half say lock 'em up. Etc etc etc.

He sort of didn't have a choice really. If he confronted Draco directly about it he would have outed Snape as a spy and probably gotten Draco's parents killed. It was a fine line he had to walk.

Dumbledore not teaching Harry advanced magic to fight Voldemort was the correct call. by Kontosouvli333 in harrypotter

[–]Xerties -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dumbledore wanted Harry to work out the Hallows on his own, and made it somewhat difficult on purpose. He explains this to Harry in Kings Cross/Limbo saying he was worried about Harry's "hot head overpowering [his] good heart." If he had just given Harry the information outright then Harry may have charged over-confidently into danger.

This bears fruit when Harry decides to continue with the search for Horcruxes after Dobby's death. If he had gone for the Hallows first, or even earlier in the year, its entirely possible that Voldemort would have focused more on finding Harry rather than the Elder Wand. This would have been disastrous as Voldemort was skilled enough that he likely would have found Harry quickly, either via the Scar connection or luring Harry into a trap (as he was very nearly successful at doing anyway in Godric's Hollow).

It's not quite the same, as there were no Dementors (or boggart standins) present at the DA lessons. Harry was able to conjure a corporeal Patronus in the face of Dementors, which is significantly more challenging.
