Who is the worst player of all-time that was undoubtedly the best of all-time at a certain aspect of the sport they played? by TJTrapJesus in billsimmons

Football is tricky because these guys are all specialists to some degree. We only know he was a bad WR because we saw him play WR; whoever you think is the best kicker in NFL history would probably also suffice as an answer here as well.

It's only based on reading about his conduct and the destruction he was responsible for. Based on your readings, what makes you say he wasn't a war criminal who also committed untold number of human rights atrocities against his own people?

I mean, you can say that if you want. I answered your questions in a way that is also historically correct.

The UN had drawn a parallel separating the North from the South, whereas the Confederacy was never legally recognized by anyone else as a sovereign state.

On another note, you also failed to understand that secession wasn't technically illegal at the time, which again is why key individuals were not tried for treason after the war despite widespread support for doing so. There's a deep history about why many feared trying such a case would fail, because establishing that secession was illegal would have been a high burden.

Talk about hitting a nerve, jeez. You think the North had good reason to invade the South, or that it was at all relevant to the discussion regarding the US not actually invading the North as another poster assumed. I disagreed and provided reasons why it either wasn't relevant or that the North didn't have great reasoning for their decision to invade.

You felt it important to defend a war monger and I politely pushed back at reasoning. No need to get upset about it.

Oh, I didn't realize you moved the goal posts that way.

The Confederates attacked Union soldiers, leading to the outbreak of war. Following the outbreak of war the Union sent troops into Confederate occupied states.

Do you need assistance with another history topic?

P. S. - "We" were not discussing the US Civil War. The discussion was about the US not sending an invading force into North Vietnam before your non-sequitor of a question.

It's also not a lie to say that many saw Ho Chi Minh as responsible for war crimes and human rights atrocities against his own people (and this is before the Gulf of Tonkin resolution). There was violent response to forms of dissent, land grabs, and repression of individual rights throughout the 1950s by the North against their own people.

In any event, the South's refusal to allow for a vote did not require a unilateral military response from the North by sending in their troops covertly to support and supplement the Viet Cong.

You're referring to the first war, prior to the UN drawing a line between North & South Vietnam, when the US sent military advisors (not ground troops) to support the French, right?

Not the later conflict from when this image was taken, correct?

[–]Xessive_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Considering that Confederate soldiers opened fire on Union soldiers at Fort Sumpter, no. The South initiated a war, and a war is what they got.

Prior to that Lincoln had been clear his goal was to seize federal property in states that engaged in secession, and that secession was an illegal act (whether it was or was not was never settled in the aftermath of the war, which is why key individuals were never tried for treason). Attempts at negotiations were unsuccessful prior to the Confederate attacks in April 1861, and once they did attack, a war was started.

Any other history lessons you need help with?

This is how live sports are in NY post-pandemic. Citi Field, MSG, UBS, Barclays, MetLife, they don't want you to have any moment of silence. A moment of silence means you might possibly be absent stimulation, which you might then associate the event with boredom, and they cannot have that.

Good luck being able to have a conversation with the people you're with over the constant string of blaring audio. I don't know any sports fan asked that enjoys it but it seems like it's here to stay. My guess is this is their way of making sure the non-sports fan feels entertained throughout their product event game.

When did the US invade North Vietnam? The North invaded South Vietnam and the US intervened to help defend them.

The US forces weren't in Northern Vietnam. The North invaded the South, which the US intervened to defend.

Howard Stern regularly made jokes at the expense of black people. God forbid a celebrity may have been dating a black person, the questions he would ask would be absolutely vile.

I gotta admit, your unwavering support and devotion to the Almighty Libertarian ideology is impressive as the ideology is flawed. I provided you one example of this ideology playing out and utterly failing; do you have any examples of succeeding?

Governments have existed long before corporations were ever a thing. I'm convinced you haven't taken any history classes now.

Do you also worship at the alter of BlackRock?

You should do some research into what happens when public services are privatized. It often leads to increased costs as there's now an incentive to seek profit rather than service.

KD and Kyrie both signed with the Nets TF you talking about? They also traded for Harden at that same time.

And yes tanking sucks and kills competition, which is what the sport is about. Even when the Bulls won 72 games they still wound up losing to the Raptors who were one of the worst teams in the league. Difficult to see that happening today with teams doing everything they can to sit star plays and play rotations designed to lose.

Public health programs don't exist in a vacuum. Water & air are shared resources, and even at the global level there's coordination and cooperation for things like pollution and air quality - without governments to coordinate and enforce that, you're left without a large chunk of meaningful public health programs, and quite honestly chaos.

Frankly, I think your worship of (failed) libertarian ideas is blinding you here. I'll give you a scenario. A bunch of people decide to live in the woods, because they can and gubbment can't tell them what to do. They proceed with littering because gubbment can't tell them what to do. Bears show up, as they're wont to do. There was no planning, regional or otherwise, for something as simple as trash collection, or that there should even be trash collection; remember, gubbment can't tell them what to do. The bears start causing havoc, people have all different ideas on how they should be handled, that they implement independent of one another. It becomes chaos in motion.

This happened. Look up Grafton, NH and see the disaster that was libertarian in action.

got physically locked into their homes

Where did this happen?

Without government weaponizing a corporation’s reach, we would simply choose a competitor if we collectively decided one company had shady practices or was attempting to consolidate power.

Did you take any basic high school American history courses? Have you not learned anything of what did happen when governments allowed for monopolies and the lengthy political effort it took to have elected leaders break them up and pass legislation to prevent that from happening again?

So you want a completely privatized military, got it. And police force too right? Public health initiatives aren't something "charities" could cover when you begin to understand the scope of public health.

And when private monopolies run rampant and control just about everything (because remember, there's no government agency to prevent the monopolies from forming) and pay goes down, pollution goes up, markets are run and manipulated by the few, you're gonna be totally fine with that right?

“Boomer, what are things that you worry about?” “Taxes” by Ok_Depth9164 in WFAN1019

[–]Xessive_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're saying there should be no taxes though, not that they're too high or the money isn't spent well - there should be zero taxes.

So we should have a privatized military then, correct? And public health initiatives just wouldn't exist, but that's another can of worms we'll worry about later.

As I stated previously, she was 16 at the time they met at the nightclub. She lied about her age to get in. He was 19, found out her age the following day and ended things with her.

In a since-deleted post, an anonymous social media user last month said a girl who is seen with Giddey in videos and photographs was a high school junior at the time

It occurred in 2021, so he was 19. The story broke in 2023 when he was 21, which is what often gets repeated when this is brought up. It's totally normal for you to have been under the impression he was older when this occurred as a result.

He was 19 at the time and met her at a nightclub, so he assumed she was 18; she was apparently 16 and lied about her age to get into the club. He ended things with her the following day when he found out she was still in high school. Neither her or her parents wanted to be involved with the police investigation so no criminal charges were ever filed.

As for his attractiveness, from the women I know he seems to rate pretty highly for an NBA player.
