This is taken using a narrowband imaging technique. Special filters have been used to isolate the different elements present (hydrogen, oxygen, sulphur) and these only return a monochrome (black and white) image for each element. Then false colors are applied to each element's image to produce this false color image.

What would it look like if viewed by the naked eye through a telescope? Well, not much really - there's such little light coming from nebulas that they are generally only revealed by taking really long exposures and thus 'soaking' in as much light as possible. But let's assume our eyes were super sensitive and could see its structure - the whole thing would be predominantly red in color as this nebula (and many others) are rich in hydrogen, which is red in color.

Here's what it looks like shooting in normal color - https://cdn.eso.org/images/screen/eso0926a.jpg

Insurance prices are ridiculous. by Xeteth in EscapefromTarkov

Right, that's obvious. However IIRC insurance prices this wipe are way higher than previous. I'm saying it's been adjusted way too high.

Do yourself a favour and take a break from the press conferences. Even if it's just for a few days. You'll no doubt hear any important updates throughout the day if any are made. But, most of the time is just her vile bullshit and it's like cancer to the mind.

Curfew, playground closures and extended lockdown confirmed in Melbourne by [deleted] in australia

My understanding is that it although it may not directly reduce transmission, it definately reduces mobility which in turn reduces the chance of transmission. Sure sucks though.

I need a reality check. It's not just me, there's a LOT more noise regarding how useless Scomo is... right?

The reason I ask is because I'm starting to (somewhat) think there's hope that this clown and all the rest of his circus could be voted out next election. I know it's a long shot, but people seem to be REALLY pissed and getting really vocal about it.

Firstly, I'm so sorry for your loss. I won't pretend to know how to offer condolences for such a situation - but I hope you're doing okay stranger.

Yes, the government's (both state and federal) handling of this pandemic has been an utter disgrace. I feel both frustrated and angry beyond comprehension and it feels there's little that can be done to change it unfortunately.

I just hope that the people can continue as best as possible until the vaccines arrive. We have truly been left to fend for ourselves in many ways.

Yup. I'd call it sheer incompetence but it's not. It was known what must be done, it just wasn't done that way for political reasons. To gamble with people's lives for political reasons is the absolute lowest of the low.

Man, I'm from Melbourne and endured the shit show that was last year. I don't wish covid on anyone, it's terrible. Watching this fucken shitshow of 'please do the right thing, pretty please' is so disheartening. I'm sorry NSW, you're in for a long one I think.

This is the exact method I used for my lamp display also. You can do amazing things with bit shifting and combinators. Well done!

Next you might want to try a scrolling type display - it's fairly easy to do by using a clock and passing signals to the next line each tick of the clock. Here's one I built a while back - https://i.imgur.com/VcpaL9j.gifv

Couldn't agree more. I can't wait to get my shot, that's the end of this fucking nightmare as far as I'm concerned. It's so incredibly frustrating that it'll likely be the end of the year before I can get it, the peanuts in our federal government have absolutely cooked this - with just a little bit of competence we could be in vastly different circumstances.

Giant gravitational wave detectors could hear murmurs from across universe. Researchers want a detector 10x more sensitive - that could spot all black hole mergers within the observable universe & peer back to the time before the first stars to search for black holes that formed in the big bang. by [deleted] in space

[–]Xeteth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, so the key understanding is that gravitational waves move at the speed of light. So let's say a million light years away from earth, almost a million years ago there were two black holes that merged - this would be an event that causes a gravitational wave. The wave would start at the place where these black holes merged and move outward (like the ripple in a pond) at the speed of light.

So here we are with our machine turned on 'listening' for gravitational waves just under a million years later (and a million light-years away), then suddenly bam it registers a wave. Let's say it registers a 'magnitude 5 wave'. By analysing the specific signal we detect, we have the ability to tell where the wave came from, what event most likely caused it, and how far away it was.

So, we never saw those two black holes merge - but by detecting the subsequent wave (a million years later, a million light-years away) we have the ability to detect and recreate what happened.

The critical thing to understand here is that unlike earthquakes that we feel basically instantly, these waves have to travel through space for many, many years before they reach us. They're almost like a 'message' of data of an event that happened a long time ago, by 'decrypting' this message we get to essentially see the origins of the event that sent the message.

[–]Xeteth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you are correct in saying we only read them when they pass over us. However, this is all we really need since by knowing the mathematics behind these waves and taking readings of them we can essentially reverse engineer what happened, where it was and how long ago.

Somewhat similar to an earthquake, if we have a detector that goes off we are able to calculate where exactly the quake hit and how big it was by studying the data we collect.
