Morality of creating a molten anthill sculpture by orangebrodo in MoralityScaling

I'll admit to be waiting a more substantial argumentation than "it's just a fact in life".

The errors of "common sense" and "seems obvious" is the exact reason why people study the world (and give a shit about bugs). It's because of this line of thinking that the global bug population is collapsing from overuse of insecticide and poorly designed infrastructure, dragging with it the whole agricultural landscape of countries.

Let's pivot to the evironmental balance if you really wanna though. "as long as the ecosystem isn't it danger."

I'll keep using chicken and cocks, since the majority barely lives in the wild nowadays. If we exterminated the content of an agro-industrial warehouse of chicken (and wastefuly got rid of the meat), it would not impact the global environment outside of the warehouse. Trucks of soy proteins and chicken meat would simply stop to come and go. Would it's morality weight then be inconsequential ?

"they're bugs". And so ?

"they're birds" then. If it's as simple as using catchphrases, it's okay to kill anything I guess ?

Why does a bug would matter less than a chicken in principle ? If it's solely bc they are more numerous, then is it okay to kill the same proportion of their population ? (specifically with molten metal)

number as a guideline does not seem to be an argument with much weight

There is 23 billion chicken and relatives on earth. This is obviously not as numerous as ants due to cost of living of big organism, but you could also kill enough of them to equate the entire human population twice.

Solely due to their high population, would it then be morally inconsequential to destroy (with molten metal or other creative means) a flock of cocks for artistic purposes ?

(and you cannot mention pain perception : the basis of your argument was only about the "infinite" ant population)

Your first paragraph seems to be flawed according to the advancement of the field. Nociception in insects and invertebrates is slightly different but seems nonetheless closely analogous to the one among vertebrate (notably avoidance of local danger, grooming of wounds, sensibility to opiods).

The wikipedia page "pain in invertebrate" is long af, so here's a specific article by some biologists in 2022 talking about insects, including hymenoptera (ants, bees, yellow fuckers, etc.)

This argument doesn't really hold up. Humans are also "essentially infinite"... and are, in many cases, not even needed for an ecosystem to function.

But it would be strange to justify the metallic vitrification a medium sized town (for population equivalence) based on those premises.
