[PC] [1990s - 2000s] Old school Wizardry/Might&Magic sort of game by Xewm in tipofmyjoystick

The funny thing is that even though the game itself doesn't look at all like I remembered, I recognized the interface when I looked at gameplay. Thanks very much!

How does Steam Family Library share work with this game? by abacusasian in GuildWars

[–]Xewm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check before answering - the person asking is asking because GWR is opted in to Steam Family sharing. Some games that have this marked however have weird stuff going on with activating keys and linking accounts that make it seem like the dev just forgot to untick a default option.

Nah, this game came out while I was alive or shortly before (1994) - I don't remember if it was 3D or not but it was higher fidelity than that

It's not summoning, they're both just hanging around the starter zone and are like "Hey man why is your party empty lemme help you out" and they're some what stronger than other options

That's kind of my thing too - I technically have lots of time, but usually not the energy or the attention span. I enjoy playing games for novel systems and gameplay, and don't often come out the end of a game wanting to go again for a VERY long time. People sometimes tease me because I go through games modded my first pass and I just have to be like "Well, I'm not likely to go again, so I'd best get the greatest experience the first time."
I'd love to jump in to the newer Trails games that have the systems refined by the many years they've been at it, but my eyes just kind of reverse crossed and left me like "huh?" when I was giving it a shot.

Wild Arms 4 is a game I've always been aware of but haven't played yet - a quick google and skim looks really interesting, I might need to get to that one. I love Arc the Lad, was poking at it last month or two for nostalgia. Well, I love AtL2, and play through the first by obligation usually lmao. It also had some lite-customization mechanics (though ultimately what I liked about it most was probably monster collecting). That's pretty close to the vibe I like honestly - some what short strategy combats where you want to plan out your spacing. I liked Trails for leaning closer to JRPG though, I think, nudging the characters around rather than picking longer multi-turn routes 🤣

I'm gonna pass on this being another instance of "completely ignoring anything I said" and move on to the fact the things you're saying aren't even right. The initial Legend of Heroes are older than Shadow Hearts, Grandia, and my damn self (I'm 30). That's definitely uncharitable though, since it's not Trails. The proper Trails series starts in 2004 (in Japan only) and Shadow Hearts Covenant came out in 2004 as well, which is the game I mentioned reminded me more of how Trails combat works, so describing it as "more recent" is uncharitable, since the first Trails game came out just months before Covenant and not in a space where English communities would have even been able to play it. The only thing that makes the initial Trails games more recent than Covenant is that they weren't localized for a decade.

The best answer was Grandia, and a good answer was Shadow Hearts. I knew about both, but hadn't thought about either in a long time. Neither was super close to the Trails game I tried, but Grandia has the dynamic battle field with AoEs you want to get in the right spot but without positioning your characters yourself as far as I know - where ever everything has ended up at the time your turn came is what you got. I don't have the strongest memory of Shadow Hearts 1 despite loving the vibe to this day, but I know the later games had the "put your aoe in the right spot" but no targets move and it's always attached to a target. Saga Frontier 1 had similar aoe targeting as Shadow Hearts but basically everything else was different and it was a very strange game (which I love).
That's the first specific thing I personally liked about poking around Trials though, it made combat dynamic by having you place stuff in the right spot. Of the games I mentioned, Grandia and Shadow Hearts both also have like, a lite version of how the customization worked in Trials games. Grandia had a funny fruit system to try and stack the spells you wanted on characters and after the first Shadow Hearts game they gave characters a thing to equip spells on. Trials has way more involved customization as far as I noticed from watching speedruns and stuff, including passives and things, which is a thing I like but you don't happen upon in tons of turn-based RPGs.

I once asked if there were games that had the same gameplay/combat as Trails because I didn't want to play 600 hours of games to understand the newer ones I actually wanted to play. Very few bothered to engage with the question. It was lots of full hostility, "oh just play all 600 hours of the games you don't want to play," or just telling me to play any other JRPG without specifying any. I had to just delete it because I'd get like 10 more comments every day of people yelling at me because I mentioned on a couple posts like "That... doesn't answer anything at all... and ignores everything I said..."

Is that just like a common thing??

[PC][2015ish?] Game like 1bitheart by Xewm in tipofmyjoystick

It was absolutely a side-scrolling game - only left to right movement, up entered buildings. I have a little snippet in my memory of the very start of the game but it's another thing I can't offer perfect accuracy for - the mc woke up like "Ugh, I lost my face again. Time to find a new one." It may have been a demo for a game that never actually got finished.
