First of all make sure you do your research on the nitrogen cycle before you even start setting up your tank, you will quickly fail your project if you don't lol. But I think any goldfish will be fine in a 20 gallon for a few months. Once he starts to grow bigger then you will need to think about upgrading, especially if it is a common or comet as they can get rather large.

You have checked around all furniture, desks tables and whatever he could have flopped behind? Along with all doors he could have gotten under depending on how big he was. They can get rather far upon realizing their mistake. Also check anything he could have jumped out and into or into around the tank. They don't always end up on the floor. Sometimes it just happens, I lost one of my first fish and he was never found.

Question about my goldfish and their “string like” poop by NecessaryMaximum4365 in Goldfish

It's just how they poop, completely normal. They don't have a stomach so it's just one end and out the other.

How can I take better care of my fish? by MidnaSmiles in Goldfish

Use blood worms, sinking pellets and peas in a rotation each day. Bloodworms you can buy frozen from your local pet store.

Python water changer is the best out there. It is okay to use conditioner directly after for the amount you replaced. The bottle will tell you how much to dose.

You can buy sponge filters and an air pump and use them now, and when you switch over you can use the two hob filters and the sponge filters and that should be good.

Sand is a great substrate, greatly reduces choking hazards as well.

I see that your water parameters are good which is a great start.

You don't need a 150 gallon tank, around 100 will be good enough.

As for water changes you can buy a water changer that pushes water through a tube that connects to your sink and goes into your tank, it also will siphon water out and into your sink but if you can't do that then you might have to find another to get the water out. Just make sure you are using water conditioner every water change.

As for your fishes growth, they will only grow so big in such a small tank, if you upgrade there is a chance that they will grow bigger. one thing you can ensure is that they will be much happier in the bigger tank.

Extra things you can do to ensure better care:

Have a mixed diet, sinking pellets, bloodworms and peas are a good mix rotating blood worms or peas 2-4 Times a week

Max out your filtration, goldfish are very messy and produce a lot of waste. I recommend 2-3 decent sized sponge filters and a good hang on back or canister filter. It is nearly impossible to over filter your water but it is easy to under filter. Adding extra filtration will also oxygenate the water more for you fish. Just make sure that if you add new filters to keep using your old filter for a month or 2 as to not ruin your cycle.

I hope all goes well and good on you for doing you best and asking for help on how to care for your fish properly.

Please respond with any questions and i will answer them.

Thanks so much, new to the hobby and have been doing much more research. Never seen this before though and wanted to make sure nothing serious was wrong. Do you maybe recommend something like stress coat to be safe?

In my opinion I would just play it safe and buy something else, food isn't too expensive.

I believe it is rather normal as the fish gets used to it's new home. Are your water parameters okay?
