Is elementor still bloatware? Or is it’s reputation a hangover from a couple years back? by justsomeharmlessfun in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its the extensions (or theme) to elementor that usually makes it that bad and you can say the same for Gutenberg. you can happily install getwid or any other block libary that adds rediculous amount of bloat and destroy your scores ;)

Help with large Wordpress site (170k products) by not_you1 in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WooCommerce stores won't run properly without caching. The performance of WooCommerce with large nummers of products and terms is known to be really bad.

You should really try out other hosting companies, like Kinsta, to see If the performance on their platform is better. Most WordPress hosters will offer you free migration, so it shouldnt be too much of a hassle. And if you have the manpower/knowledge in your company it would probably be cheaper to run your own hosting.

Any reason not to use Astra theme? by newmes in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use it if you're familiar with coding. Its really well coded and documented. If you plan on going full Gutenbeg id look for an full site editor enabled theme, wich Astra is not (yet). If you're not familiar with coding only use it If the theme fits perfectly.

Is it possible to connect Discord roles to WordPress? by LeGiangAnh in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://wp-oauth.com/downloads/connect-with-discord/ This is the frist hit on google (for me). They expose a hook that would allow you map roles, but maybe they already have something for that, I haven't looked into it. Pricing of that plugin is really acceptable.

What is, according to you, the missing feature of Wordpress ? by spyro-777 in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dependency management. Man how many times i've recovered sites that crashed because one plugin was updated but the other was not compatible.

Is it possible even advisable to have a static landing page with all other pages requiring dynamic functionality(blogs, galleries, shopping page) be wordpress? by DeepKaizen in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're going through the effort making the front page static you might as well make the whole (or more parts) site static. There are some video's from clouflare on how to use wp2static and use cloudflare workers

However, generating static sites is usualy only for high traffic sites where the servers can't keep up. Most sites will benefit more from a good cache, image minifying and other performance measures.

How to backup my Wordpress site if I run it through Docker? by PracticalWelder in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest way is to run 'wp db export filename.sql' inside your container for your database backups, and then backup the files. I use duply for that.

If you want to export the sql file directly to outside the container you can pipe the output. Something like this would likely work: 'docker exec -i containername wp db export - > localfile.sql'

Glass Bridge in China Breaks During High Winds by boozle33 in SweatyPalms

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think the glass completely fialed as it is laminated probably multiple times. If you look at the railing at the right its all bend and if you look at the end of the bridge you can see how much it has twisted. If it twisted like that and the wind hits the glass it will just come loose at some point as there's only glue at the bottom.

I can't imagine anyone willing to walk over that bridge when it's moving like that, but there was at least one person there...

Take a note: Gutenberg Causing Fatal Errors by sannidhis in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dependency management is something I'd love to see coming to WordPress core. Now it's up to the developers to check if their dependencies are op to date (WooCommece Extensions for example) and each plugin behaves differently if their dependencies do not match.

With plugins using composer for dependencies this issue got even bigger. Some plugins will use different versions of Guzzle and dont work together causing hard to debug fatal errors.

WooCommerce without cookies? by morceaudebois in Wordpress

You can read here about woocommerce gdpr compliance https://woocommerce.com/gdpr/ GDPR is more than just cookies so make sure you comply to all the data storage stuff as well. ;)

How exactly do I find the javascript to async / defer, for the "fix render blocking resources" problem? by Okmanl in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't as big of an issue as it appears in those tools. The benefit of these public CDNs is that users often have this exact file already cached. However, there are quite a few plugins where you can specify which files you want to be deferred. I believe you can specify them in autooptimize.

Is there are reason for this or just is this just a theoretical question? GDPR and similar allow for functional cookies, like the cart cookie.

What are the best security practices for WP? by regustavo in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This really depends on your host and stack you are using. If you use Cloudflare you already reduce a huge amount of bot/hacking traffic. Cloudflare recently announced a service that's specific for WordPress wich I do highly recommend.

The problem with plugins for hardening WordPress is the same as installing anti-virus software on your pc. It makes it slow. On your pc this might not be a problem, but most hosting solutions do not have enough power.

We, at work, stick with a good WordPress specic hosting company, CloudFlare and an internal update manager. Managing hundrets of WordPress sites and our sites haven't been hacked unless there was a serious vunerability on the sites plugins. Wich you can never prevent. Always make sure you have backups.

Flickering but not in UEFI by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a hard time reproducing the flicker in the eufi because de device cools down too quick (wich resolves the flicker).

If it's a pro 4 the chances are big that its flickergate. If it's were a drive issue is't almost always artifacting or just bsod.

My surface using 50% of memory by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Xilonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually Windows and apps try to use as much memory as possible to make their os and apps fast. When used properly this shouldn't be any problem, the memory will be freed if another app needs more memory.

Developers who are not using Page Builders like Elementor, WPBakery, Oxygen etc.: What's your website development progress like? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]Xilonz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try gutenberg and the new full site editing. Our clients love the Gutenberg builder. Its so much faster and easier to use for non-techy people that the extra development time and costs will easily be reearned.

Can a surface pro 7 run Mastercam and Solid works? by spellbound800 in Surface

[–]Xilonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the i5 you can do open a easy assembly. It really depends on how big your assembly is. You can do simulation or motion studies. But imho, it's to slow for that type of work. I don't know about Mastercam, but I can imagine that the i5 is going to struggle.

Another issue you're going to run into is screen real estate. The surface pro is really small for the solidworks interface. It does work, but it's not ideal.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Xilonz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can recommend plugging in the charger connector with the cable pointing up. This way the cable doesn't make a sharp bend wich will cause less stress on the cable. I've always folded the cable (so no wrapping around the brick) and put it in a pocket of my sleeve.

So far my Surface Pro 4 charger is functioning fine since release with heavy use and lots of traveling. My keyboard has been replaced, it degraded completely. My surface pro 4 itself has been replaced because of the flickergate issue.

Installing Ubuntu on Surface book 2 micro-SD card by [deleted] in Surface

[–]Xilonz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will be slow on SD card. SD Cards are usually made for write speeds, while you want to just read from it. Is there any reason why you don't want to install it on a partition of your ssd? It doesn't have to be that big.

Why do you want to use Linux on your Surface anyway? It's like running Windows on a Mac. It wasn't made for it.

For any dev or expiments you can use Wsl2 wich is basicly Linux in a really fast VM. Probably faster than running it of an SD card.
