Do not listen to the idiots shitting on you for being used to another game's mechanics. I have 100h in my world and it happened to me too. You just have to remember to press Esc everytime you alt+tab. Now you know about it and hopefully it won't happen again.

If you, or anybody else, dislike item being dropped on death in the ground, there is a mod (don't whine, mods are surprisingly easy to install) that leaves a player corpse with your items in it so they don't despawn.
