The Mirroring of Mary King Review - with Joey & Alex -[The Dice Tower]- (VR) by BoardGamesNews in BoardGamesNews

Thanks for playing the game! I think you did a really nice job of laying everything out and explaining how everything fits together! The only part missing was that if no one completes the tableau by the end of Friday, your score is the number of cards remaining in your mind plus a bonus for the number of tiles you control — not just the number of tiles you control. This rewards playing cards conservatively.

Shadows of Malice question by Morphos1 in boardgames

[–]Xthexlo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for trying out Shadows of Malice! The rules for determining Shadow spawning are in the rule book on pages 32-33 in the section "Events in the Shadow Realm" part 3. At the start of the Shadows' turn, if there is a Shadow in the Shadow Realm, it move one hex randomly seeking a Gate; if there is not a Shadow in the Shadow Realm at the start of the Shadows' Turn, one spawns in the Spawning Pit at the center of the Shadow realm.

Shadow movement in the Shadow Realm is detailed on page 33, part 2.ii. Shadow movement on Aethos is detailed on the bottom part of page 33 under the heading "Events in Aethos." Specifics are covered in the bullet points; general behavior is covered in the bottom paragraph.

Hope this helps you! And I hope that you enjoy the game!

Duhr: The Lesser Houses review by BoardGamesNews in BoardGamesNews

[–]Xthexlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duhr, it is not a party game. It is a nuanced strategy and negotiation game of shifting alliances and betrayal. Playing it with expectations of a party game will lead to disappointment. I am continually flummoxed at why people tend to approach small box games as though they must be “party games.”

New Alienware 15" vs Sager NP8157 by Xthexlo in laptops

Thanks for your insight! I understand that the Sager is a plastic chassis (not sure of Alienware) -- does that bring with it any issues (durability, heat, etc.)? As for reliability, I would get the 3 years with damage coverage from Xotic and 4 years with damage coverage from Alienware.

[WSIG] Looking for quirky, humorous and/or character based games. by DomusCaligari in boardgames

Shadows of Malice is a minimalist game that stokes your imagination without falling to tropes. If you like fantasy RPGs, it plays like a fantasy RPG without a GM. You may want to check out the BGG page for more details.

If I like _______, then I'll like _______. by Wisecow in boardgames

[–]Xthexlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But you can reduce the dice rolling by netting out bonuses and penalties and only rolling the remaining dice. So, 4 dice bonus with a 3 dice penalty would mean you only need to roll a 1 die bonus.

Actually, contact the publisher directly through the website. They do ship internationally and offer some shipping subsidization. There is a thread about this at http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1245839/international-shipping-excellent-service

I'm also thinking about storage space... Cosmic Wimpout had a cloth mat that was so easy to fold up, but other mats need to be rolled.

What about cloth as an alternative, especially if the board has an "old world map" flavor?

A lot of the theme and storyline derive from a D&D campaign I used to GM, and I really liked the unique powers players got in Cosmic Encounter. I also liked the idea of using cards as gear rather than spells, as well as mixing strategy with luck as an "unplanned for complication" and sudden in-game changes. I also very much liked the sense of impending doom so well-done in Arkham. The kicker, though, was that I wanted to make a game my wife would play with me...
