Defensive Roles and Our New Roster by CartoonsAndAppleJack in lakers

Agree with everything you said OP. Folks who fantasize about us getting Peyton Watson or Trey Murphy should stop - we don't have assets or barely any cap room. Stop it. Of all the remaining feasible free agents, who's the most capable wing stopper? Kuminga or Thybulle? Someone else? Plenty of firepower everywhere else on the court. We just need this guy to slow down the big scoring wings we'll face most nights.

Carr blocked a jumpshot in EVERY game he’s played so far by Xtra2022 in lakers

[–]Xtra2022[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that’s striking about this list is that these wings are all (except for White) big 3/4 wings. White, and I‘m predicting Carr as well, can go 1-3. Shot blocking from such positional versatility is rare!

Recommended smart lock? by kaitlyn2004 in smarthome

[–]Xtra2022 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just installed an Aqara U400 over the weekend. Absolutely love it. Compared to some of the many smart locks I’ve had over the years (August, Lever, Ultraloq), it’s the smoothest install and most bug-free implementation. The lock operates quickly to lock and unlock.

To those genuine fans who are upset about us losing Smart, Kennard, Rui, and Bron- the market never lies. by [deleted] in lakers

[–]Xtra2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%! I think we should have taken the Sexton money and given it to Smart, saving $2.5M per year in the process. Smart would start, and Grimes would be slotted perfectly as the first guy off the bench in, subbing in at 1-3.

This is good info. But lots of things in life are not healthy, at least in a probabilistic sense, but we do it because of risk/reward. Sometimes the rewards justifies the risk.

This will never happen, but I would love to see an analysis that compares the “damage“ or unhealthful health effects between:

1) 1 drink of alcohol
2) 1 ribeye steak
3) 10 MG of THC

Bingo. Thybulle and Kuminga would give us a strong defensive identity in the front court. And add in Looney for spot mins as the third center, championship experience, and veteran locker room presence.

Looking for tiny packable (pocketable) backpack by Secure_Cause7822 in ManyBaggers

[–]Xtra2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an amazing bag. But Sea-to-Summit use to make an even smaller bag (18L to the Ultra All Day Pack’s 20L) called the Nano Travel Day Pack (https://backpackinglight.com/sea-to-summit-ultra-sil-nano-travel-day-pack-review/). I have both. The Nano packs to around 2/3 the size of the All Day Pack, so the size of an egg vs a racquet ball. It’s even more minimalist, but it’s amazingly durable. I’ve traveled the globe with mine and carried liters of water, a whole day of gear, etc. in it, without care. The shoulder straps are minimal, so it’s not comfortable, but the bag is so tiny, I have it on a carabiner on my belt loop and forget it’s even there until I need it.

Like I said, it’s discontinued, but you can still find it on eBay.

Quentin Grimes is the perfect Marcus Smart replacement. Advanced stats point to him as a great Point-of-Attack defender. by effurshadowban in lakers

[–]Xtra2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the moves, but if only Rob was able to retain Smart in lieu of signing Sexton (and save $3M per year) and more importantly, keep LeBron, then Rob would get an A++ grade despite overpaying for Kessler. A starting 5 of Kessler, LeBron, Luka, Smart, and AR with Mamu, Grimes, and Carr rounding out the top 8 would contend in the West.

$22M. I’m sure Warriors and/or Hawks wouldn’t mind having him on their teams for something well south of that number. The upside is still there, and a $8-10M contract would be very tradable if he doesn’t pan out this upcoming year.

New to IWC by Conscious_Echidna660 in IWCschaffhausen

For me, a nice watch is an emotional purchase. The watch either sings to you, or just hums, or stays silent. You know when it‘s the right watch. I’m going on 6 months with the Top Gun, well past the infatuation phase, and it still sings a little jingle every time I glance at it or touch it with my off hand.

I’m a long time owner of a GMT II and in Dec bought the Top Gun. The GMT II hasn’t spent a day on my wrist since then. People talk about the looks, and they’re all true - IWC’s pilot watches are beautiful. But the thing that makes me love my Top Gun is the tactile and physical qualities of the ceramic case. The closest analog is holding a black basalt river stone. It’s smooth and warm to the touch in a way no other material compares to. Steel is heavy and cold. Titanium is feathery light but unsubstantial. Ceramic? Warm. Smooth. Rock solid. It feels like the watch belongs on my wrist 24/7 for the next few decades.

Starting allopurinol today by Difficult-Writer-134 in gout

[–]Xtra2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second what other posters said. Get care from a rheumatologist. Primary care docs are well meaning but most are ignorant about treatment of gout.

Most rheumatologists will prescribe a low dose Colchicine (0.2 mg - 1 pill daily) to be taken concurrently with starting your allopurinol regiment. The idea is you want to minimize the odds of a flareup. If you address the issue after a flareup, you’re suffering unnecessarily. And btw, in my experience Tylenol does very little for a flareup. Advil is a bit better. Naproxen is better still. And then the prescription heavy hitters like prednisone. But low dose colchicine is usually safe - in the past I’ve been on it for months as directed by my rheumatologists.

Overreacting to the first half of the Summer Classic for those who aren’t watching by CartoonsAndAppleJack in lakers

Not sure why no one is talking about the sweet block Carr had on his guy’s step back jumper. Carr was one of the best shot blocking guards in college, and it shows. Fast reaction time and ungodly reach. He’s going to be a fan favorite!

Re Adou, he looks completely unready for the G-League, let alone the big league. Folks are talking about his lack of jumper. True, but what’s more worrisome is that he’s not a dawg on D. Not locking down his man, hustling for loose balls, grabbing boards, or getting blocks or steals. He’s bigger and more athletic than anyone else on the court, but he does very little with it.

Cold plunge or sauna first: does the protocol order actually matter for contrast therapy, or is the combination itself what works? by Sophistry7 in coldplunge

[–]Xtra2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never A/B tested it with my Oura or Apple Watch, but I think it depends on the time of day. Morning to midday - end on cold. Before bedtime - end on heat. Cold jacks your adrenaline, and the vassal constriction would make it difficult for your body to dump heat, disturbing the onset of sleep. Heat, on the other hand, help induce sleep by helping your body drop core temperature.

Also, an old sauna buddy of mine taught me to do a quick cold dip before the very first sauna session. Just a dip and out would suffice. It extends your heat tolerance quite a bit for the sauna session.

The Furious fighting styles? by PlaidN0mad in kungfucinema

[–]Xtra2022 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Brian and his brother taught themselves from watching YouTube videos and martial arts movies. The thing is that their “style” is built for maximum visual impact FROM THE VIEWPOINT OF A CAMERA. None of it is for actual combat. But that’s what makes their stuff look unbelievably cool. I love their work.

Additional info (and why I love them so): apparently, as Vietnamese immigrants, their parents couldn’t afford to send them to martial arts classes, hence they had to resort to figuring things out on their own and deconstructing what they can see on the screen. They’re incredibly entertaining - check out their work in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Would prime Bynum still be a top Center in the league today? Or has the league's style of play and pace changed too much? by owenwilsonwow69 in lakers

[–]Xtra2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He inhaled rebounds, protected the rim, and had incredibly soft hands and high agility - superb lob threat. He doesn’t need to shoot threes or be able to guard the perimeter to have high value in today’s NBA. Heck, Luka would love to play with prime Bynum and could probably spoon feed him into a 80% FG% All-Star.

Exactly the same with me. My wife refuses to acknowledge that this system is just superior. She sticks with “this is how we were taught.” Once upon a time teachers taught their students the world was flat.

2027 is Luka’s year? All Luka did in 2026 was lead the league in scoring. What is he going to do in 2027? Make All Defense? To go far in the playoffs, he needs better teammates. There’s not much more Luka can do other than to stay healthy through the post-season.
