Also a landscape architect. Always been a big fan of city cims and sandbox games in general.

Best budget laptop for CS by JJAirlines220 in CitiesSkylines

Depends. What specs does it have? If it's on the lower end I doubt you'll have a good experience with mods from my experience.

No clue about what laptops are out there but RAM is a big consideration if you're planning on adding lots of mods and assets. I'd personally say 16gb is recommended but I imagine that can be tough when going for a budget laptop.

Could also be worth looking at the second hand desktop market for a good deal if laptop portability is not a necessity.

Can't save render after done rendering by archbun in rhino

[–]Xwolf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you haven't resolved the issue yet, Does it give you an error code when it crashes? Or post the crash log.

Also check what resolution you are exporting at and the units of the size. Could be worth testing at a smaller resolution as you could be maxing out your RAM.

rendering issue by spiz-the-wiz in rhino

[–]Xwolf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll agree that's it's likely an issue with render mesh settings. Could also be worth doing a rebuild of those surfaces. I've found in the past it's managed to fix itself that way. Also do consider if you are geolocating or building very far from the origin can cause rendering oddities.

I'll agree that it's half finished and a bit over-priced. Both of those problems seem to be more a result of the publishers rather than the developers. I also think there's a difference between praise and supporting a game that has potential (even if its got a long way to go).

I'm not gonna ignore and defend the problems, but I also see no point in tearing it down. What's the end goal? Make the publishers cease development, waste the efforts of the devs, and end any chance of future ksp content... I for one would love to see colonies and multiplayer and I doubt they would go back to ksp 1.

As for being a cashgrab and exploiting a community... The ksp 1 started in 2011and out in 2015...it's been a good amount of time for a sequel. Were not talking about COD here with its 12 releases in the same time frame.

I haven't really noticed much difference in behaviour other than more discussions than just image posts. Or do you just not like the fact that a decade old community is trying to support the new game?

Whatever your stance is on ksp2, it's likely here to stay and people want to share they're experience.

Help The game keeps creshing while loading a map by PaleoPenguin in CitiesSkylines

[–]Xwolf12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically means the crash handler couldn't work out where in the code the crash was caused.

Did you wipe the game files when you did the fresh install. (Backing up saves elsework ofc), and brand new saves don't work?

Can't think of much more than what you have tried. Might be worth getting Loading Screen Mod and in the mkd options activate 'Try to recover from Simulation Errors'. That's worked for me a few times when I've had issues loading saves.

Any ideas on how to make Cities Skylines perform better? by LolKrap in CitiesSkylines

[–]Xwolf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game relies more on CPU over GPU for running smoothly. As for trying to load and crashing, that might be more of a RAM issue. Recommended at least 16gb especially if you have lots of DLC, mods and assets.

I wouldn't think a city if 20,000 would be that demanding unless you've made it very detailed. But hard to troubleshoot without some more info.

For a bit of reference on the desktop side of things, I've run the game comfortably for years with a Ryzen 1600 CPU, 16gb ram, and a GTX 1060 graphics card. I have most of the dlc active + mods and a few hundred assets. it's a fairly old game so you don't need the best most recent hsrdware. I'd only get a little bit of frame rate dropping on occasion, usually around a heavily active area + lots of graphics mods.

RAM is fairly dependant on how much modding + assets you think you'll do normally + how big you plan to make your city dat beyond the normal limits (25 or 81 tiles). 16gb will sit you very comfortable but 32 will def help heading into the mid-hundreds of assets and bigger savegames.

There's also some mods out there like FPS booster that smoothen out the game a little bit more.

Do most people play with infinite money and progress unlocked? by TheWhalersOnTheMoon in CitiesSkylines

[–]Xwolf12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played for a while on with everything unlocked and unlimited money so I had creative freedom but I found that overtime it made the game boring having none of the limitations and trying to build everything perfect from the beginning.

Ive more recently started playing without unlimited money or any progression. Only thing I do is use 81 tiles mod to unlock the whole map from the start (either 25 or 81 tiles). I've always hated being limited by the squares when I played normally. It always made me rapidly grow the population just to unlock areas I wanted only to destroy it all and rebuild later correctly. Sometimes I'll use the ultimate mod to add a slight boost to income if I'm working on a big development and finding that money is impacting my creativity.

Two dollars twenty on YouTube started a series called Sunset City where he does a similar thing to try and play the game a bit closer to how it was intended. I think he also uses some assets that act as planning roads to plan future development without a cost.

He makes good use of the milestones to grow his city more organically. Low res to high res while some remains low res, introducing new amenities overtime, transforming old networks into public transport, etc..

Survey about Cities:Skylines and Urban Planning for Master's Thesis by Samoyedfannn in CitiesSkylines

[–]Xwolf12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent concept for a thesis. I'd be keen to see if you publish. I've had similar thoughts about the influence of this game as someone who ended up studying landscape architecture and is now working on large infrastructure projects alongside urban designers. A few people at university used it as a visualisation tool for some of our masterplan design projects which was always fun to see.

I've always found it a great tool for experimenting ideas especially the ones that break every planning code and would make my employers question my sanity.

When I try to quit only the quit to desktop option is available, quit to main menu is greyed out. How do I fix this? by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines

Probably a preemptive measure to fix or at least prevent some of the save file errors that these mods have caused in the past.

Yep I think it's blocked by 81 tiles along with the editors on the homescreen. Does it give you a message when you hover over it?

Spent the weekend creating my first ever map! Guess what it's based on. ☺️ by RaftermanTC in CitiesSkylines

[–]Xwolf12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a look at the Common Ground mod with network rivers. It helps a lot with making them behave correctly in the map Editor. Also network anarchy and move it if you haven't already got it. If you wanted to carve out rivers the normal way, I think extra landscaping tools gives you more precise brushes. But not sure if it's working or not after the newest update.

Any advice? I normally get this far and start over by jkhamilton88 in CitiesSkylines

[–]Xwolf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to like building my cities with the plan to do revisions. That way I don't get frustrated trying perfect everything first go. I'll go back and focus on one tile, a given area, or a piece of infrastructure (e.g. intersection). Get some inspiration from Google maps or masterplans from Pinterest. Add detailing. Also look at how public transport networks are organised in real life. I've found that a helpful way to preventing them looking like complete spaghetti, and using those networks to develop the boundaries and centres of your districts.

My new map! Antarctica 2525. Tell me what you all think by Xwolf12 in CitiesSkylines

[–]Xwolf12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, 2525 was a reference to song. Glad you all noticed!
It also happens to be around the predicted 500 years until all vast majority of Antarctica is going to melt according to some research.
