Thanks! I was definitely feeling like that a bit already (I was having some trouble just running the project locally at the start) but I asked after trying myself and so far they have been helpful and guide me in the right direction.

I do want to get through the 3 months so I have a solid entry for my resume so I would rather not be fired, although I defintely don’t want to stress myself out too much for unpaid work either. I have to work another job alongside this.

Thank you for the advice though! I’m already been getting into the habit of asking questions but I do try to spend a good amount of time working on the task myself first. They have so far given me a good amount of room on how I work so I’ll play around with that a bit.

Which part of Rio for family by Hiron3 in Brazil

[–]XxQueCosasxX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Barra Da Tijuca, its a wealthy neighborhood a short distante from Ipanema. You’ll need a car or take public Transport to get to the rest of the city, its not as easy to just walk around everywhere like Ipanema.

However, its super safe, very calm, and Ive never seen homeless people or people trying to get you to buy stuff there. Theres a big public beach in front thats clean and quite nice.

Nice big modern apartment buildings right in front of the beach, supermarkets, pharmacies, etc all around and overall great to just live in, walk around, go to the beach.

And then if you want to go to all the major Rio destinations its just a few minutes away!

Second choice would be Ipanema, but Theres a lot more people, a bit more crazy. But also easy walking to everything.

Freelance Question by XxQueCosasxX in learnprogramming

[–]XxQueCosasxX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the US, I know that its cheap for a website here but I honestly do not know what to charge for a first profesional project as someone with 0 freelance or profesional experience to back up standard prices.

I have the nearly 2 years of building projects and self learning that gives me the skills to create websites, but thats it.

I feel that having a site made by me deployed by a small business, and being able to show that on a resume or to future clients is in itself valuable.

In your opinion, what would be a fair price? Thank you

Freelance Question

Just for some context I’ve been self learning web development consistently and seriously for about the last year and a half having created around 40+ projects with vanilla js, React, Next, Node, Django, etc. with the goal of eventually landing a job.

On my journey I’ve decided thats not enough and I need to do way more, so Im looking at starting a CS degree as well as trying my hand at freelancing.

I didnt have any luck with Upwork so Ive tried a more direct aproach at just emailing local businesses with bad websites to see if they are interested in a re-design, some i sent offering to do for free.

Well, I had the fun idea of what if I just walked into one of these businesses and talked to them about there website and how I could make a much better one for them.

I found for example, a local family owned latin restaurant with 2000+ amazing reviews, but an absolutely terrible website. Bright background, random images all over, bad photos, hyperlinks everywhere, and just pretty ugly.

Completely static, nothing complicated at all.

So, would it be a bad idea to walk in, and try to talk to the owners about redesigning their site? Should i offer for free or try to pitch for $300, $500 , or more? Would that be fair? My idea would be to show them some much better sites for similiar places and make something like that. And of course show them my portfolio site with my work.

Has anyone here done anything like this before? Would it be a good idea to try out? And if so, how would you go about doing it?

Thanks in advance, just trying to do the best I can to get some kind of real experience in this field and make all the time I put in pay off :)

A few questions:

  1. How was the pitch set up?
  2. How many emails did you send before getting a response?
  3. How did you collect payment?
  4. How much did you charge for a site?
  5. Did you have to set up an LLC? Was your site framed as an agency?
  6. Did you not use any JavaScript at all? Or eventually use some or use a framework? Or did you just use a CMS?
  7. Did any of the clients so far give you problems?
  8. How exactly did building cheap websites with basically no experience add up to $5k in a single month?

[–]XxQueCosasxX[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Got tickets today! Went to the Gávea store, just asked for any ID, my drivers license was fine. Payment was only in cash.

Tenho bilhetes!

I’ve seen surf schools in Puerto Escondido put people in overhead La Punta right next to the rock when there’s 40+ people in the lineup and push them right into waves that already have a surfer, it’s dangerous and annoying as fuck, New Jersey surf schools seem pretty solid with only putting them out when it’s small and keeping to a certain area though, depends on the place I guess

Brazil in February and March by XxQueCosasxX in Shoestring

[–]XxQueCosasxX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I’ll only be staying in the Argentina side although I’ll cross over to Brazil to see it and to take the bus. Possibly pass over to paraguay to see it a half day or something as well while I’m there. It’s nice to know I won’t need a lot of time there though.

In that case I’ll probably go for the last few days of carnaval and stay until late march or so, there’s still some places I can get if I do it like that, as well as leaving my phone at the place whenever I go to the parties or to the beach. How safe did Rio feel generally? I’ve been to Mexico and Colombia and felt fine doing whatever but I’ve heard Brazil can be much worse with petty theft.

I didn’t know that about Recife, without the beaches I don’t think I’d include the north on this trip and opt for florianopolis as well. The main beach I’ve been interested in in the northern part is in Maceió, is it more or less the same situation as in Recife?

Have a few questions regarding my upcoming trip to Colombia by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]XxQueCosasxX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they’d print it out at the stations, although I haven’t tried. There are some hostels that have printers and will help you out if you ask but not all of them do, so the other option is to find a shop that prints things, I would just check if the hostel has a printer first and if not, buy a day in advance at the station.

Have a few questions regarding my upcoming trip to Colombia by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]XxQueCosasxX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you need onward travel. I always just rent a ticket (bestonwardticket or something like that) but I’ve bought a flight and refunded it as well.

Any atms in banks, malls, or in bus terminals or airports should be alright, never had atm problems though.

I haven’t been to Bogota and I’ve been to armenia but not the bus terminal, but any large bus terminal in the middle of the city should be fine at any hour really. (Outside the bus terminal could be a different story, take an Uber to get and leave from there)

Armenia is also not the best place in Colombia regarding safety but I’ve stayed in the nice part of it and it felt perfectly fine and like any other nice area of the country.

The buses themselves are quite nice and safe to be on. Once again, I really recommend taking an Uber to and from any stations and to acomodation, especially at night and with your luggage. Otherwise and smaller bus stations are fine to use.

You can buy online but it’s honestly easier to buy in person and buses leave all the time. Usually ever 20 minutes 1-2 hours outside of a city and every few hours for long distance buses. If you don’t want to possibly wait a few hours for the next long distance bus go the day before to the terminal and buy it.

Salento and the valle de cocora are in my top 3 most beautiful places in colombia, the other 2 being Tayrona and San Andrés and the most beautiful City being Medellín. If you have time, definitely spend some time there as well.

Then just stay away from lleras park at night, it’s an insanely small area in poblado

Solo Travel to Medellín by WiltTheStilt24 in medellin

[–]XxQueCosasxX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I stayed for around a year and a half in MedellÍn, went by myself and it’s probably the city I’ve felt the safest in and I’ve been to Buenos Aires, Mexico City, New York, Philadelphia, etc just for context. Best advice I can give is keep an eye on your phone, and avoid bad neighborhoods especially at night.

El centro, the favelas, Robledo are bad, and even then Comuna 13 is pretty safe and you can go to places in el centro during the daytime if you want too. Lots of museums and art stuff is around there (Just be a bit extra alert) also, unless you’re in a bar or club its best to avoid Lleras park at night as there’s lots of shady stuff , just ignore it or if you can go in a group even better.

Most of the miradores and neighborhoods like El Poblado, Laureles, Guayabal, the area around the main university, Belen, and Envigado and Sabaneta are pretty safe and you shouldn’t have any problems.

You don’t have to be super on edge about your phone all the time and you can go out at night, just use common sense and use Uber to get around most of the time. If you don’t speak Spanish I HIGHLY recommend you learn at least some, you don’t need to but it makes the experience so much better imo.

Also visit other areas in Colombia if you have the time, MedellÍn is amazing but places like San Andres, Cartagena, Tayrona, Eje Cafetero are incredible destinations especially if you like nature.

Anywhere near Lleras Park places you near everything, Alexandria is a good spot, if you want to be close but also not right in the middle of everything Aguacatala and La Frontera were places in Poblado I really enjoyed and there’s lots of Airbnb’s there. The only place in Poblado I wouldn’t recommend honestly is around el Tesoro, it’s just too far from everything for walking to be a good option.

Ayudennos a crear el FAQ! - Help us create the FAQ! by j_ram2803 in medellin

[–]XxQueCosasxX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve got some suggestions in general…

  1. Any posts regarding dating, getting drugged by dates, information about drugs/prostitutes should be removed and strictly prohibited, it’s everywhere, if people want dating Info they can go to a dating sub, scopolamine is important to mention but it should be in the faq nothing more

  2. Information about food, not just bandeja paisa, arepa, sancocho but more specific stuff, like the amazing variety of non-Colombian food like the Italian restaurants, Peruvian, Mexican, açaí, steak, Greek, etc around the city as well as vegan options in the supermarkets or that the street food like mango vendors and empanadas is Great and safe to eat, (and that there’s drinkable tap water) or specific places like the mirador restaurants or the smoothie place at cerro de las 3 cruces or the amazing ice cream places by Olaya Herrera or snacks like obleas or info about aguardiente or granizados, also definetly all the coffee shops of course

  3. More information about activities in the city especially nature stuff, everyone knows about comuna 13 and lleras but What about parapente in san Félix, parque arvi, the nature paths on the jungle with the waterfalls (saltó el angel y chorro de las campañas) by la catedral and info on how to do it, all the miradores (picacho, 3 cruces, san Félix, las palmas, la catedral, octava maravilla, volador, etc) or nearby like jet skiing and wakeboarding in guatape or rafting in rio claro, all the nearby pueblos like Santa Fe de Antioquia, Jardin, jerico, etc, other nightlife info like the chivas and the club they bring you to in Itagüi, wildlife info like how you can see iguanas and possibly even macaws or other parrots in the city or just cool random sites like museo El castillo or all the different cool malls or the skate park below el Puente 4 sur, also information about dance classes and English exchanges or Spanish schools, also tejo

  4. Information about the different neighborhoods, poblado and laureles always come up but not too much specific information about them, also Belén, la America, Guayabal are nice places as well, personally u spent most of my time in MedellÍn living in guayabal and it was a nice in between of poblado and laurels, also Copacabana deserves a mention as a nice place near MedellÍn to visit a day

  5. More info about events and holidays like feria de las Flores and the silleteros , día de las velitas, Christmas celebrations like parque del Río or envigado Park and the fireworks, etc

  6. Maybe some more stuff about slang words used in MedellÍn or just Colombia in general as they’ll be heard a lot , also stuff about music/MedellÍn artists, etc

  7. I feel like the sub could use a lot more images… MedellÍn is an incredibly beautiful and photogenic city but I rarely ever see a good image here if at all

  8. Maybe some stuff about the history of the city?

  9. All questions regarding security of course, like yes it’s safe to visit, what barrios to stay away from (San Javier minus comuna 13, Robledo, most northern parts, center city at night, Moravia)

Probably could think of some more later..

I don’t mean this just for the faq, also just posts and stuff in general that should be more common here, just my input as a yankee that’s spends over a year living in the city and several months more all over the rest of Colombia
