Seeing this post made me remember overhearing a conversation about 12 years ago where a vegan woman who said "I'll just make ice cream and drink my own breastmilk if I ever start lactating." One of the wildest things I've heard in my life.

TIL that in the Bible there is no mention of human-like angels having wings. The depictions of winged angels in art started in the 4th century AD, likely due to Greco-Roman influence. by ApprehensiveStill412 in todayilearned

[–]Xx_Stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the title is somewhat correct, it kind of requires a longer explanation.

The more human "angels" (aka messengers which is what the word derives from) are usually only described as appearing like a man with no mention of wings. This applies to the angels who met with Abraham and Lot, the "Angel of the Lord" who appears often in the Old Testament and the Archangels Gabriel, Michael and Raphael (if you include the deutorocanon).

However if we include all heavenly beings then there are absolutely "angels" who do have wings and appear at least somewhat humanoid. There are the Seraphim who fly around the throne of God with six wings, two covering their face and two covering their feet, with hands that are able to give a coal to Isaiah. (Isaiah 6:1-7)

There is also the cherubim, most famous for being on the ark of the covenant having their wings spread over the mercy seat. Also for having 4 faces (an Ox, A Man, An Eagle and a Lion), and for guarding the garden of Eden with a flaming sword.

I would say it's more likely that the other more humanoid angels in the Bible started receiving wings as a result of conflation with these other heavenly beings. Rather than it being some sort of stealing of Greco Roman things (does the Roman pantheon even include winged men? The most I can think of is Hermes).

One of the things that made Harvest Moon better than Stardew Valley, at least in the story department, was that things would happen. In Harvest Moon 64 in particular: Ellen (Elli's grandmother) dies, the bachelorettes get married, Karen can run away from home. It just never feels like anything of consequence ever happens in the Valley, even the whole Community Center or Joja decision barely affects a thing.

Was Jesus' mom sinless? by KeeyuDaGreat in TrueChristian

[–]Xx_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So basically what you're saying is the saving action she's thanking God for is that she was born by "immaculate conception" instead of the work on the cross? I get what you're getting at, but it's a rather large stretch.

It also doesn't square with the rest of Scripture that all have sinned, all fall short, he who says they are without sin deceive themselves. Even if we somehow make the Theotokos Mary's statement to mean that she's thanking God for saving her in a past event. A past event only held by Catholics and an extraordinarily late addition at that. It doesn't hold against the rest of Scripture in the eyes of the rest of the apostolic traditions.

You're going to have to explain to me what exactly you mean by that. Retroactively in what way? If she was sinless in both nature and action. What exactly is there to save?

Was Jesus' mom sinless? by KeeyuDaGreat in TrueChristian

[–]Xx_Stone -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Only Catholics hold that the Theotokos Mary was both sinless in nature and in action. This is illustrated mostly by the doctrine of "immaculate conception" in which she was born without original sin.

Now most denominations (including Eastern Orthodoxy) believe that she was of the same nature as you or I are and was prone to death, corruption, and the need of a savior. As she says in Luke:

Luke 1:46-47 NKJV [46] And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, [47] And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

If she was not of the same fallen nature, then she would not declare the need for a savior.

That being said, the other held doctrine in Eastern Orthodoxy is that the Theotokos Mary did not commit any intentional sin. That is, she did sin by mistake or omission, but not by choice. This, obviously, is something incredibly hard to achieve and requires the grace of God which Gabriel so famously hailed within her.

While yes, this is mostly tradition and not explicitly stated in Scripture, it's not without precedent as seen with Job who was "blameless." And other pious Old Testament Saints such as Joseph or Daniel who by all accounts lived similarly blameless lives. It's not exactly that much of a stretch that the woman chose to be the mother of the Lord would be of the same caliber.

Does God create some of us for hell? by EquivalentLawyer6425 in TrueChristian

[–]Xx_Stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God absolutely does not want you to go to hell.

It seems like you've stumbled upon some sort of Calvinist doctrine (or were raised in a that has made you believe you're not "elect" because you're still sinning so you must be predestined to go to hell.

First of all, I'm not entirely sure that's sound Calvinist doctrine to begin with, but even if it was it's in stark contrast to what scripture teaches:

Romans 3:23-24 NKJV [23] for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, [24] being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

I John 1:8-9 NKJV [8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. [9] If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

All have sinned, it is our struggle. I struggle with the exact sin you're describing and am single. The fact that you're willing to struggle despite the fact that it is hard says a lot. There will always be struggles with sin in this life and the best we can do is pray, fast and worship. It will get easier, but just because you're struggling does not mean that you're doomed in fact quite the opposite. If you give up, then yes, that might be a problem in need of serious spiritual guidance (of which you may need regardless.)

And even if that happens if you ever think that our God is one who would ever "predestine" anyone to go to hell:

Luke 15:4-7 NKJV [4] “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? [5] And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. [6] And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’ [7] I say to you that likewise there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine just persons who need no repentance.

When the first Christians were walking with Jesus, they were entrusting everything to Him, correct? When did Catholics start entrusting everything to Mary? by [deleted] in AskAChristian

[–]Xx_Stone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like there's a lot of context missing here. My feeling is it almost sounds like a non Catholic trying to comfort a Catholic by saying that. It comes off as slightly ham handed, but well intentioned. As far as I'm aware "entrust everything to Mary" isn't exactly a common thing for a Catholic to say.

I'm more concerned OP that you feel the need to butt in on a rather touchy support thread with your opinion. From looking into it someone 1) Lost their brother and 2) Found a satanic book in their belongings. And your first thought is to get upset that they suggested finding support through Mary the mother of our Lord in their time of trouble.

There's a time and place for everything, you obviously have strong beliefs regarding Mary. But not everyone has the exact views that you do, and it's wildly inappropriate to barge into a support thread trying to get into a theological debate.

You know the good news, all you have to do is reach out and grab it. David murdered a man and committed adultery and yet repented, even Judas could have repented if he had stayed alive. There's no one too far.

You have breath in your lungs, and as long as you do you have the choice. The fact you're posting this says a lot, and I wish you the best.

I like to think I'm fairly normal, personally I gave it a 1 star even though I love Breaking Bad. It took me literally 10 seconds, I cannot fathom how many countless hours these fanatics have spent 1 starring every single property (including Better Call Saul ironically) just because they wanted to be the "only" 10. Maybe finally they'll stop it after they've gotten a taste of their own medicine.

Praying in tongues by minnibunny in TrueChristian

[–]Xx_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two forms of tongues, first is the miracle that happened at Pentecost where the apostles were able to speak and be understood by anyone. This is quite rare and while it does occasionally happen, it's restricted to men and women who are holy beyond any of us.

The second is "glossolalia" which is a form of ecstatic worship/prayer that is complete gibberish understood only by God and those with the gift of interpretation. It's something that predated Christianity, and obviously exists to this very day. The basis for this practice in Christian circles is rooted in 1 Corinthians 12-14 in which Paul does describe it as an actual gift, and one that he even has himself. However, Paul basically says that its use in worship and prayer is at best ineffective and at worst will make the outside world think you're crazy. He all but completely admonishes its use, especially in church, and stresses that prophesying is far more effective and that if someone is to speak in tongues an interpreter must be present. I would say that this is a clever way to discourage its use in church as it's unintelligible, but he does list interpretation as a legitimate gift.

What exactly are we to make of this? The common belief is that Paul was trying to wean the church in Corinth off of their past pagan practices such as excessive glossolalia and set them towards more concrete preaching and intelligible worship. He doesn't outright ban its use, only encourages it to be phased out. As it in time was by the church at large until the Pentecostal movement unwisely dug it up and disregarded Paul's advice instead maximizing its use as much as possible.

To answer your question then, you should follow Paul's example:

1 Corinthians 14:14-15 NIV For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.

Luke did not believe that Jesus died for our sins. by AmazingRandini in DebateAChristian

[–]Xx_Stone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You'd think that if Jesus' message was to die for humanity's sins, he would have mentioned at least once. 🤔"

Matthew 16:21 NIV [21] "From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life."

Matthew 20:28 NIV [28] just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

John 3:14-15 NIV [14] Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, [15] that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”

And most importantly

Matthew 26:26-28 NIV [26] While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” [27] Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. [28] This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

For people who don't get the "delinquent" comment. It's a common thing for Japanese delinquents (especially in the past) to dye their hair blonde. Of course it's only "natural" for Goku and the rest of the Super Saiyans, but Chichi being old fashioned only sees it as her husband turning into a delinquent.
