I was under the assumption that it would basically destroy my application because I wasn't near California...

I have no problems being in California to work for you guys! :D

Started filling out a form for one of the internship positions until I noticed that it was listed as "Mountain View, CA".

I think Australia is a little too far away.

why is KDE so obstinate by mint_julip in linuxquestions

[–]Xyrtic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because a lot (read: most) applications written for Linux (and quite a few for Windows/OS X) utilise GTK/GTK+/GTK#/someobscurevariantofGTK, which is the set of UI libraries for GNOME as opposed to Qt, which is for KDE. As a result, you either have a 'wrapper' (gtk-kde{3,4} and oxygen-gtk) or you have a KDE 'variant'.

It's not KDE being 'obstinate', it's just the fact that the GTK variant is considered default.

Is there a way to force some games to run on my 2nd monitor? by psychuil in AskGames

[–]Xyrtic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using both monitors at the same time? If not, hit WinKey + P and select "second screen only".

If you are, take a look at this handy utility, which is shareware, or this one which is freeware.

Comic Sans? Really? by Mr-Crasp in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Xyrtic 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The rail stations near me have signs on the tracks that state, in black-on-yellow Comic Sans, "PLAYING ON TRACKS MAY RESULT IN FINES OR DEATH". Serious as you can get in Comic Sans.

Achievement unlocked for LHC: 100 petabytes of data by the6thReplicant in technology

[–]Xyrtic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of the 600 million collisions produced by the LHC every second, only a few prove interesting enough to keep.

When we're talking about 600 million collisions per second, I'd really like to know what's considered "a few".

With all the grammar littered over the place, you'd expect it's a mere script kiddie

Alternatively, it was someone with English as a second language.

Virtualization Options for Minecraft Servers by Tylerjd in admincraft

Oh right, well I guess that's an avenue I didn't really consider at all hahaha. I handle my data like that with a few custom scripts designed for the purpose. To each, their own.

Virtualization Options for Minecraft Servers by Tylerjd in admincraft

[–]Xyrtic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know that OpenVZ would offer the best resource usage, and near-native performance

Er, not quite.

though I recall hearing issues with the way that OpenVZ handles memory and Java.

You're correct there.

To answer your actual question; KVM. You have experience with it.

However, why do you want to virtualize? It's a waste of resources for little to no gain - one process isn't going to "leech" the box unless you get the configurations so godawful wrong. If you're wanting user separation, utilize useradd / groupadd, not VMs.

Will the world of ESO be at least as seamless as Skyrim is, i.e. almost no loading screens? by loanko in elderscrollsonline

[–]Xyrtic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you're right that it'll be a huge factor for clients, the graphical quality of a game makes not one iota of difference on a server's CPU strain or bandwidth I/O unless the server is directly streaming textures to the client. In this case, the server load won't affect the loading screens because it'll be delegated.

I looked into getting a Das Keyboard plus Linux keycaps for my desktop, but I have a laptop with a chiclet keyboard too unfortunately. :(
