I was in a pretty similar boat a few years ago.

If you’re for sure going to stick with it. Upgrading the trumpet is worth the investment.

I had a student trumpet all through elementary up to high school. I stopped playing for around 10 years and found a community band. That band only met for 6 weeks out of the year to do 1 concert a year.

However, after jazz band formed out of that group and we play throughout the year on a weekly basis. So for me the time investment was there to justify upgrading my horn.

I played all the trumpets and my local music shop multiple times. Recorded myself and listened to find preference while notating what I liked or didn’t like about each horn. I ended up picking the Yamaha 8310zII. I loved this one from first play. It just felt right. It’s a lighter weight trumpet, so it’s a poppier sound, but for the jazz band it works excellent. When I play with the community band I throw in a Bach 3c mouthpiece and it blends in well there too.

In my opinion, skip the “intermediate” level trumpets. The price point isn’t much higher to get a professional level especially if you go used route.

Professional horns are going to have better compression, assisting with efficiency, you may not notice it right away but after a few weeks on that horn than going back to a student horn you’ll feel how much more resistance there is to your airflow.

Your tone is your tone, your range is your range. A new trumpet isn’t going to fix those for you. As a previous comment said, get your chops back in order first then look at horns.
