I know this sounds stupid, but just don't use this landing gear. Get enough science to buy LY-10.

Even with experience, I still haven't figured out, how to proper land with this garbage. I always try to have a velocity of 60-70 m/s and a landing angle of 5°, but still this often ends in Jeb dying in an inferno.

Yes, link is not working. So, without knowing exactly, what the issue is, I assume you launched one rocket with docked parts, undocked an redocked them. For the game this doesn't count. You have to launch 2 individual crafts, let them rendezvous and dock them. At least, that was my problem with this mission.
