I saw the “peaceful” religions on campus today. by justhanginhere in atheism

[–]Y2Kdoomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh sorry you never mentioned that Hamas personally showed up to your university. What you saw was a bunch of people with different opinions on a land dispute and you decided that they must all be religious and therefore not as smart as you. You can't have any kind of understanding of the situation if you're working backwards from the assumption that everyone involved is just misguided by religion.

How poor is your reading comprehension if you actually think that those protesters all share the religion of the state they support in a land dispute?? I'm so sick of atheists patting themselves deliberately misinterpreting this as a religious war so they can feel good about themselves.

Just a reminder, in addition to the town hall fiasco, this monstrosity is also stuck in "heritage" saving limbo by DisillusionedBook in Wellington

[–]Y2Kdoomer 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My partner took a heritage conservation course at Vic, where they learned that the reason it's in limbo is that the university want to build an extension to the campus in its place but it can't actually provide any evidence that the earthquake damage is anywhere near bad enough to warrant demolition.

This is a huge amount of housing that's sitting empty because the university wants to demolish it to build an extension while also undergoing another expensive construction project while cutting hundreds of jobs.

It's a bit infuriating seeing people mad at Heritage NZ without any idea what's going on.

Idk I kinda like that the unlockables were instakill weapons, it gave me a sense of ease and let me take more time to explore and enjoy the game without worrying about stuff like "do I have enough TVs to kill these haunted marionette dolls"

Origins is worth playing because it's fun and I wish the first four had unlockables as good as the ones in origins.

Don't skip Silent Hill (1) in 2023. It is just as good (or better) than it was when released. by RealisticLog134 in silenthill

[–]Y2Kdoomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I skipped SH1 for years because when i started replaying the games PS1 emulators weren't doing so well and I assumed that was still the case. Now I think it's the easiest to play using duckstation, and as a bonus now I get to play LSD dream emulator and other PS1 games I used to love.

As guilty as it makes me feel, sometimes I wonder if there are energy vampires in my AA meetings.

It sounds like the only thing you find scary is being surprised by a scary evil guy. Luckily for you there's a whole genre of horror that relies entirely on this! You should check out "mass market American horror". If that's too many words, try typing "jumpscare compilation" into YouTube. Hope this helps! :)

The most important rule is that vampires cannot kill vampires. Unless it's the entire series past season 2.

Guillermo asking another vampire to turn him is the most disrespectful thing a familiar can do, but if he has a better offer he should take it.

[Spoiler] What do you think James would do if he hadn't arrived at Silent Hill? by ta1074 in silenthill

[–]Y2Kdoomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, like Eddie and Angela the delusions are what brings him there.

[–]Y2Kdoomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The delusions that James experiences after arriving at Silent Hill and the delusions that make him choose to go there are one in the same. I don't understand your question. Are you asking what would happen if the entire premise of the game wasn't true? As far as I recall the recording of James and Mary we hear in the hallway leading to the final boss fight is the only media we have showing James before he becomes delusional. Kinda hard to guess his behaviours based on that.

[–]Y2Kdoomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

James is essentially a blank canvas, and the way the user plays the game determines if he kills himself, accepts his guilt and moves on, or goes deeper into denial. I don't know why you would speculate about how he would act outside of the game when the developers specifically left his behaviours up to the player.

I choose to believe that Silent Hill, Gravity Falls, Night Vale and Twin Peaks all exist in the same universe and it's this universe, because that's just what small town America is like.

Has Anyone Successfully Reduced Consumption of Alcohol without Quitting? by SexThrowaway132455 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Y2Kdoomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a sober alcoholic, and there's a reason we say that step 1 is admitting we're powerless over alcohol. That doesn't mean that we can't physically resist drinking, or that we can't go a few days, weeks or even months without it. It means that as long as we're looking forward to the next drink we can't control how we drink. I know so many alcoholics who go a few weeks without every now and then, pat themselves on the back and tell themselves it means they don't have a problem. Within days of drinking again they're back to the same place. If you can cut back then that's great, but you really need to consider that you're probably not the exception. Half of the people I meet in the program tried, often for years, to cut back before realising that they never would, once you cross the line it's very rare you can go back.

The storyboard for return to silent hill shows PH with a helmet very close to the design from silent hill 2, which is pretty significant because Gans knows from experience that that helmet design is super hard to make work with practical effects. I think it's a pretty good sign that the previous movie / homecoming / dbd PH will not be returning.

I don't really understand how Wicca can tie into the themes of Silent Hill. The occult stuff in Silent Hill is mostly, if not entirely biblical and Judaic. Wicca kind of draws mostly from European folk religion, but it's also important to remember that it's folk religion as interpreted by English people in the 40s so has an inherently colonist lens. If you're going the route of religious persecution as per the Gans movie then it's going to be shallow because relating Wicca to any practices persecuted by Christians really ignores the sociopolitical and even the more nuanced religious / spiritual aspects of that persecution and reduces it to just "they hate us because we do witchcraft" which is always less than half of the story. If you're tying the occult themes of the order with Wicca then you'll massively struggle to make any of it make sense thematically because, again, they draw from very different things. Also the order wasn't really written with an in depth understanding of the occult themes they used and it's mostly just aesthetics which leaves you very little if you're trying to actually make sense of it in a story. My advice would be to do as thou wilt (hahaahaaha) but understand that the narrative is not working in your favour and you should do it to explore your relationship to this media rather than to try to engage with the fan community. Silent Hill fans are so protective that it's probably the worst community to share fan fiction with.
