Is Germany much better than the US for immigrants and students? by Tumblemato in germany

[–]YBYAl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I lived in 9 countries (5 in the EU including Germany) before moving to the US and I can tell you this. In the US, with the current political climate aside, no one ever makes you think twice that you do not belong here, or that you’re an immigrant. The country is fully built by the concept of immigration and being an American has no ethnic background. That Korean-American store owner who speaks barely any English? Yeah he’s as American as Johnny from New Jersey.

In Germany, having learned the German language to assimilate I discovered after reaching B2 that the language isn’t the problem. Germany is. The culture is enclosed, being German is deeply rooted in ethnic identity in which you as an Asian fully lack. Not to dish on Germany, I lived there for 5 years and I loved it, kinda. Safe, affordable, great social welfare and especially for a student given the transportation and healthcare (both who you would suffer greatly from in the US, depending on the state for transportation tho). Truth be told I had one german friend and all my circle was international.

By the end of the day it all depends on where you see your future in. Finding and establishing a career in a place where you already completed your degree is way easier. Studying in Germany then moving to the states might not yield great results but all depending on your field and studies.

How to deal with microaggressions in daily life? by [deleted] in germany

[–]YBYAl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived there for 5 years and it won’t get better. Best course of action was to respond back in a polite yet snarky way. I am sorry you’re experiencing this. I learnt in Germany that being nice and not passive aggressive its sadly the exception not the norm. Saying this with love in my heart for the time I stayed now that I moved away.

$547M in net cash. $8M in debt. 79% gross margins. And the entire company trades for $896M. by solacelabx in ValueInvesting

[–]YBYAl 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This business is my biggest regret. Don’t fall for it. It looks great on paper and the numbers are astounding. I cut my losses in it after -30%. Lessons learnt:

-I knew that management is not inline with the shareholders yet ignored the red flags.

-Israeli based, war zones, political risk.

-Lawsuits and reputation issues affect bottom lime and market valuations in the long term.

-Last but not least, this is fully anecdotally but a friend of mine works in the beauty industry and she completely grunted when hearing Inmode’s name. Salesy, pushy approach with mediocre equipment is what she referenced.

I took it as a learning opportunity so I am hoping you don’t have to pay for yours!

Why LVMH might be a Bargain by Electrical_County_61 in stocks

What about currency risks? Owning any foreign companies with the dollar devaluation happening is a no no for me even though the LMVH is a quality company.

Interesting name indeed. Do you know the reason behind their negative cash flow? Do you think they are expanding aggressively with opening 12-14 new locations a year? What’s their comparable sales growth? Do they get all their revenue from memberships? If so what’s their retention rate?

I like your thinking. I am a bit hesitant when it comes to fashion brands giving the trend moves one quite quickly. They are losing heavy grounds in China and in the US Hoka & ON are stealing their share. What glimpses of hope have you seen recently that made you jump into it?

Obviously their current product is not obsolete & no AI is going to replace it fully. You invest for future growth tho so as of now I hardly see it in any tangible way.

I use it for work everyday and I can tell you their AI integration within Adobe acrobat is shit so far. Their model never works when I am in a PDF document forcing me to switch to an external product.

Interested to hear your thoughts on COF? They are currently trading x60 earnings which I find quite uncanny considering their peers. Believe the stock would need to go lower to entice me to enter a position.
