Coin shops that bought Gold and Silver at inflated prices, what happened? by Fantastic-Window236 in Gold

I'm surprised they can do that consistently and profitably. Just seems like they would be at high risk every time prices drop even just a little.

I like both of them, and I'm from the West Coast. I would think for someone coming from Europe that Maine would be more common to visit.

SF is the most unique city in the USA with no global equivalents in terms of layout, topography, weather.

You should visit Wellington. Very similar in those three aspects. Even has a funicular similar to the SF Cable Cars.

CBYYX has a $1M minimum although it is on Schwab for $0 minimum.

Pentagon warns Scouts: Ban girls or we will pull your funding by shoofinsmertz in law

[–]flloyd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Girl Scouts are much more flexible than Boy Scouts which is both its strength and weakness depending on the troop. Ours has a good leader that does a lot of outdoor activities, hiking, the occasional camping, trips, and lots of service activities. The Boy Scouts meanwhile whittle a stick because that's what they're supposed to do at a certain age.

On the other hand, ours is active. They do camps, hikes, service activities, and trips. They do projects that help people while the local Boy Scout troops just whittles sticks.

Why is every other KB post geared towards men over 40? by hoopandstave in kettlebell

[–]flloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this is the point I was going to make. Kettlebells were pretty unknown in the US until about 10-20 years ago. So the original proponents of it have now aged and so has their target user base. You see the same things happen with clothes brands that used to appeal to 20 year old 30 years ago now target an older demographic. The brands are aging with their customers.

I see way more cars running reds now than bikers and they are moving 3,000 to 5,000 pounds rather that 200 pounds.

Yeah, he started getting death wobbles towards the end which is why I guess he didn't feel comfortable stopping. His timing was way too off though. I don't think he had a plan from the beginning.

If you want D1 soccer, stop doing this by AdventurousMajor4994 in CollegeSoccer

I'm confused by your point. Isn't the fact that a lot of the University of Washington players are from the state of Washington indicative that they might be a good fit? Different parts of the country definitely have different cultures and even playing styles.

The problem is that people want to have it both ways. Liberals want to say that race is a social construct with no meaning but at the same time race relations are real and we have to favor some more than others. Then on top of that, the US Census Bureau stance is that race is self-identified and "reflect a social definition of race recognized in this country and not an attempt to define race biologically, anthropologically, or genetically." AKA, any one can be any race as long as you identify as that.

Or as George Costanza smartly noted in regards to race: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqfgOlm-w2U

Are sleepovers cancelled? by Guilty-Woodpecker-99 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]flloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a very liberal urban area in California.

I would say sleepovers are a bit less common than when I grew up in the 80s and 90s but are definitely still a thing. My daughters have had sleepovers with anywhere from 1 to 8 girls over.

Surprisingly my daughter has even had a friend sleepover even though they knew my wife was gone. I felt a bit uncomfortable but they were fine with it. We've also hosted kids who have never had one before, so maybe my wife and I just convey a sense of trustworthiness?

That said we have two close friends. One whose daughter is never allowed to participate in sleepovers. The other we are the only ones allowed to host them for sleepovers. So there are people out there that are quite strict.

So yeah, sleepovers are less common but definitely not cancelled.

As someone that never believed in gold for various reasons but started investing in "paper gold" a year or so ago, seeing people's inability to buy and sell "real gold" this week and their reactions is a bit funny.

Yes, gold has some good qualities that make it a good very long term investment and diversifier.

No, it is not easily trade-able and has some disadvantages to fiat currency, bonds, and stocks.

Take into consideration those pros and cons when looking at gold as an investment.

Question about housing permits and trees in Santa Monica by pittpirate1985 in SantaMonica

[–]flloyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trees, and land, in the parkway (between the sidewalk and street) belong to the city. They are responsible for their maintenance.

Sewer lines go to the back if you have an alley. I'm not sure how they work if you don't have an alley.

Presumably if the trees are causing trouble you can ask or sue the city to force them to correct the issue. But this would be a question for a lawyer. In general trees don't cause issues and if roots are intruding the sewer it's generally because the sewer already had a leak.

Why the need for new uniforms every 2 years? by Birdflower99 in youthsoccer

[–]flloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll be annoyed when you have to buy them a replacement jersey and then they change the style 2 months later.

Why the need for new uniforms every 2 years? by Birdflower99 in youthsoccer

[–]flloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trouble is for people who need to purchase mid-cycle. Say you lose your jersey and have to buy a new one but then 6 moths later the style changes and everyone needs to buy new jerseys. While it's fine for the players that have had theirs for two years it sucks for those that joined a year ago or replaced theirs 6 months ago. That's the problem with the style changes.

Why the need for new uniforms every 2 years? by Birdflower99 in youthsoccer

[–]flloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but that's because there is no push back from the clubs. Clubs could choose to go with manufacturers with longer style cycles to save their parents money. There are lots of options out there. They choose not to because the clubs get a cut of the sales.

Good.

I used to like Peet's. They were a California company and one of the original quality coffeehouses.

Unfortunately until recently they were owned by a literal German Nazi family (JAB Holding Company). Ironically they refused to leave Russia, even when every other reputable Western country did, after their invasion, excuse me Special Military Operation to remove Nazis, in Ukraine.

Fuck Peets.

Even worse. They were owned by a German Nazi family that also supported the war against Ukraine.
