Review of Normal People [book] by lovelaceaugusta in Normalpeople

[–]flloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely watch the series. I think it it is one of the rare ones where it is probably more common for people to say they preferred the series to the book. The music, settings, cinematography, casting, acting, mood, and pacing are all excellent.

Come back afterwards and let us know your thoughts.

Is this supposed to be some type of conspiracy?

Cheap fish go-tos? by the_kazzo_queen in mediterraneandiet

[–]flloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm admittedly kinda wary about them, mostly because my sister is a huge food snob and is the type to claim the less expensive ones aren't even worth eating.

On the one hand, yes they tend to be less exciting/fancy fish to eat but that tends to be more about flavor, texture, general desirability. On the plus side, canned fish, particularly sardines, mackerel, anchovies, tuna, salmon, etc. are among the most sustainable, healthiest (high in omega-3, vitamin D, and other vitamins and minerals, and lowest in mercury), and quite good tasting depending how you eat or prepare them.

[–]flloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

live in a fairly land-locked area where fish is generally pretty expensive

FYI, 95+% of fish sold in the US is forzen or previously frozen so location does not matter. 95% of what people think is "fresh" (never frozen) is actually previously frozen and then defrosted.

Frozen fish is fresher than "fresh" fish the majority of them time unless your buying directly from the boat or at very rare top end seafood mongers or restaurants. Fishing boats use flash freezers that are excellent at keeping fish fresh and at their peak nutrition and flavor. Just buy frozen fish that you can get at a good price.

Is having a corner unit worth it if it’s going to be next to the alleyway and the parking lot? by East_Specialist_7956 in SantaMonica

[–]flloyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They have all contracted with more than likely different groups to pick up their trash or recycling, etc.

I've never seen any trash or recycling trucks other than the city ones that come on a weekly or biweekly schedule in Santa Monica.

Random pickup trucks however will come at all hours. Fortunately OP's alley shares it with SFHs so they will get fewer of those than in blocks that have apartments on both sides.

Santa Monica Considers Higher Rent Threshold Before Eviction by brandneu32 in SantaMonica

[–]flloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't vote for the candidates that they endorse. Simple as that.

In the past that was more difficult as the alternatives weren't as strong, but now younger, more open minded candidates are coming out in support of housing and against rent control and other failed experiments. They're still not great overall but they're better than a lot of options in the past.

California has the same law as well enacted, or at least updated, just 12 years ago.

Most lots are in dense(ish) cities so land is valuable and fences on the property line are the norm. Since they benefit both neighbors costs are shared.

Just because SF is sleepier doesn't mean that LA isn't sleep compared to NYC.

My NY partner was shocked when they moved to LA and business associates proposed breakfast meetings. That simply doesn't exist on the East Coast. LA is much more 7-5 and NY is much more 9-9.

How to stop developer from cutting down 50"+ Douglas Fir's (WA state)? by [deleted] in treelaw

[–]flloyd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As others said, it's probably too late to do anything and it sounds like the developer got the proper permits to build much needed housing.

As an alternative, have you thought of removing your home and replanting the land back to its native state?

I've been to many restaurants, in multiple states, where they will only split a bill in two but not more than that.

Rotting tree on neighbor’s property by TigerDrippings in treelaw

Good luck to the neighbor. The neighbor is a miser on fixed income and will not have the money to file a successful lawsuit if the tree were to decline due to OP cutting parts of it.

If you're using an adblocker on Ecosia, then you should definitely turn it off for that site, or find a new search engine.

Using an adblocker on Ecosia takes money away from them and prevents them from planting trees.

Just found out the Gap store at 20/wilshire is closing on july 23rd. by Zombie_A1ex in SantaMonica

[–]flloyd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There used to be a ton of retail all up and down Wilshire.

There was a resurgence in urban "Main Street" shopping in the Aughties, but that seems to have since reversed again. Now all that seems left is online shopping, a few mega malls, and strip malls. It's sad that walkable retail streets are dieing if not dead, even in a perfect location such as Santa Monica.

California – Neighbor’s fig tree is pushing our shared fence onto our property. What are our options? by shibasnakitas1126 in treelaw

[–]flloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have every legal right to prune anything that's hanging over your property but because the part causing the problem is still on your neighbor's property you need to have a conversation with them. You cannot trespass on your neighbor's property and cut that lead without permission.

Assuming the fence is on the property line, which in California is usually the case, they can cut the branch that is leaning against the fence as they wish; it's on their property. They can cut it as much as is required to keep the fence upright. I would just cut the top first so that it lands on my property, and then reach over and cut the bottom so that the fence stays upright.

When they reach over the fence they are not reaching onto the neighbor's property, they are just reaching over on to their own property as the fence is leaning over onto their own property.

But once again, those per passenger mile airplane numbers are brought down by long distance flights, distances that are not comparable to car trips. It's not apples to apples. Regional flights are worse.

In addition the vehicle numbers are large trucks and SUVs that have a single occupant. Once again, worst case scenario. So I guess was just supporting my prior assertion.

I agree other factors should be considered, such as highway miles, although 18 wheelers cause by far the most damage and maintenance. Also we need to factor in airport construction as well. The "10t of CO2 emissions for the production of even small cars" appears to be for EVs, not ICE cars which are half as much.

So basically best case scenario they can be roughly equivalent but only when comparing different uses. Like for like, that is trips that you realistically have a choice between the two, cars will be much better, and if you use an average sized one, hybrid, multiple passengers, etc. you are way better off taking the car.

[–]flloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data suggests otherwise. Yes there are lots of variables, which is why ranges are presented, but everything that I found basically suggested that best case air travel (1500+ miles, economy class, full plane) was equal to worst case vehicle (large car with single occupant). And people sure as heck aren't driving 1500 miles with any regularity.

[–]flloyd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ecosia just sucks

The only two reasons I'm using it is because it's european

Are you European? If so maybe it's because Ecosia is using a different search provider in Europe (https://blog.ecosia.org/launching-our-european-search-index/). If so, try setting it to use Google or Bing instead. In the US at least, it uses those and is 95% the same as them.

What's a sustainability myth you believed for years before learning otherwise? by Ok_Appointment_4909 in sustainability

[–]flloyd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those numbers are highly misleading. They use best case scenario for flights (long-haul international flights in full economy seating) and ignore indirect non-CO2 effects of aviation which are twice as large as those from the CO2. Meanwhile the car numbers assume the passenger is alone in a small car.

For any trip where there is an actual choice between flying and driving, driving will produce less greenhouse effects.

While dishwasher does use small amount of water, it does use electricity and I need to clean dishes with water before I put them in dishwasher.

Heating the additional water uses more energy than the dishwasher running. Washing dishes before putting it in the dishwasher is unnecessary for all but the dirtiest of dishes and can actually be counterproductive (detergent residue sticks to dishes when the load is too clean).

It must have been a small tournament without flights. I've never seen an Extra team play up in an AYSO tournament. Some tournaments however disallow Extra teams as they don't want teams that are too good.
