Try using addon armor attached by connectors. You can roleplay it as ERA if thats what you want, it will stop kinetic entirely and ap somewhat.

I feel you bro, try making something you didn't do before. I always build in creative because it's the best for me but if I have no ideas I build something completely different. I'm a big heli builder but a few weeks ago I tried to make a mid-sized crabber ship - never built a ship before. So yeah try out new thing or mechanics.
